Zach Braziller writes about Lavin's response to "fire the coach" chants

“We’ve become relevant and we have sellout crowds like this and fans who are engaged and care and get upset when we lose [and say], ‘Get rid of the coach,’ ” Lavin said, unprompted. “That means we did our job. When you have fans that are passionate, that really care, as opposed of the apathy we’ve had for 10 or 12 years here."

So according to Steve Lavin we are all of us passionate about Saint John's basketball because of the fine job Steve Lavin has done as coach. Before his arrival we were apathetic and disengaged and did not care, not really. Thank goodness Steve Lavin finally arrived to revive our passion about Saint John's basketball. He's like Cialis, nearly. Hey Saint John's fans, when the moment is right, will you be ready? It's only right once every four years, so you'd better be.

Maybe someone should tell him they used to yell at the last guy too. IIRC people were wearing bags over their heads and chanting and starting web sites and holding mock funerals. He must have really been doing a good job, huh.

Pressure is on Lavin to produce. With that being said as of now I support the man.

Leaning for Lavin getting extended, especially with a ticket to the dance.
I hope he gets a chance to lead these kids to a well deserved finale.
Go Johnnies!

I'm sorry but they sold out a 5-6k arena yesterday. Him saying sell out is laughable. The stuff that comes out of his mouth sometimes....

But before anyone jumps down my throat I want this team to win and make the dance and do some damage when there.

Damn it Moose, don't you want the team to win, make the dance and do some damage while there?

Moose, surely you are aware that by Norm's end days there were less than 2,000 season tickets sold. Yesterday and a couple of times this season, the place was filled to the rafters, with energized fans. the program is not where we want it to be, but to be dismissive of yesterday's crowd as a sign that this program has life is just a plain falsehood.

Make the tournament and extend, don't make the tournament and get a new coach. That simple.

That said, I think we make the tournament and we will know within the next couple weeks.

The day after a big victory over a local rival, during a drive to make the tournament, on the last game for the seniors at CA, Brazzer gives us a shoddy three paragraph article containing less substance than a Redmen.com post. C'mon!

Near zero chance of Lavin not coming back for his last contracted year.

Agreed, Fun. The insinuation that there was apathy before he arrived is off-putting to die hard fans. That said, I stopped bothering myself with his outrageous rhetoric. Now just laugh at it.

I am a St. John's Grad Class of 1988.

Coach Lavin has my full support.

Fans should be ashamed of themselves for chanting Fire the coach at yesterdays game.

We are 18-9 on our way to the NCAA. We have 4 Sr that are giving everything they have to make the NCAA and We have fans chanting Fire the Coach at their last game at Carnesecca Arena.

Wow!!! I am sure that will want to make Recruits come to St. John's.

People will say they are directing it at Coach Lavin, but how do you think it makes the players feel.

Sad really sad

I agree. I'm all for firing Lavin if we don't make it but yesterday wasn't the time to start a chant.

I think there was apathy before he arrived, and after he arrived too. Yesterday's crowd was not typical of our home crowds this year. Too bad we did not get this support all season.

I was at yesterday's game and I am quite sure there were no "Fire the Coach" chants. In fact, I did not hear any anti-coach chants what-so-ever.

I guess I could be wrong. Did someone who was there hear these chants?

honestly as pissed as some of us are about not being better this season if there was a fire lavin chant yesterday that was pretty stupid and not the right place or time for it.

Now if we lose to xavier and are getting blown out by gtown or if we know by the big east tourney game we have no shot then I don't care what people chant. But yesterday was not the time or place for it for sure

That is not what Lavin said. He was not talking about yesterday's game.
