Next Coach?

Ummm I think winning at Syracuse is pretty significant..beat St. Mary's who is 15-3 and 7-0 in conference..won at Providence who is gonna be tied for first after tonite..don't think that's too shabby but Lavin probably skipped those games right?..I mean it's the only way they could possibly win!!..as for what was Norm left with?..he was left with absolutely nothing and he fought hard and was always a class act but he wasn't getting the program past where he had it..remember when Boeheim said there wasn't 1 Big East player on our roster??..that wasn't so long ago..this program has been in the dump for over a decade because of that piece of garbage Jarvis!Kids today have no clue about the Johnnies glory years..they just know we've sucked during their lifetime. The fact that Lavin has some top talent committing to us despite our recent past and current existing conditions(Carnesseca is a dump!!) is something he should be given a lot of credit for..by the way how is Fordhams rebuild going?..Pecora is facing a unwinnable battle there..appreciate what you have..or we can go back to recruiting 6"5 centers and 6" shooting guards who we got by beating out the local MAAC schools.

Syracuse sucks this year. So Lavin has to hang his hat now on St Mary's and Providence? C'mon now

tell me who is going to beat them at the Dome this year.
Plus they lost their prized recruit

They beat BC today and are in 3rd place in the ACC at 5-1. We beat them at the Dome when they were at full strength. We never had to beat out MAAC schools for any legit players. Besides, out of 33 conferences the Big East is second this week while the MAAC is 21st. :p

other players aren't gonna come because they don't see playing time available at their spot(Carrington for example).

When Carrington signed Seton Hall had already Sina and Gibbs. Then Whitehead signed, too.

St. John´s backcourt this season is better, but Seton Hall has a good backcourt. And Carrington is playing (and playing well).

Next year we won´t have Harrison, Greene and Branch.

So I don´t believe that Carrington didn´t come because he was not going to play.

Carrington is getting 23 minutes a game this year. Do you really think he'd be getting anywhere near close to that on St. John's this year?

Why do you ask only for this season?

I will write again: St. John´s backcourt is better than Seton Hall´s. It is obvious that he would have not played 23 minutes this year with us.

But he could have played, at least 15 minutes this season. How?

Harrison is averaging 36 minutes. He could play 33 minutes.
Greene is averaging 33 minutes. He could play 29 minutes.
Jordan is averaging 30 minutes. He could play 26 minutes.
Branch is averaging 25 minutes. He could play 21 minutes.

3+4+4+4= 15 minutes for Carrington.

And without Harrison, Branch and Greene he would play more the next seasons.

He's a city kid who didn't choose SJU so everyone gets their panties in a twist :)

Moose its more than that. He represents the kind of NYC/NJ 3 star/4 year(likely) kid than many of us feel we should have on our roster. FWIW I think he would have gotten around 20 MPG this year, and way more next year, had he come here.

And maybe he realized that Lavin was going to play these Sr's and not give him a fair shake. Maybe he sees how little the bench plays. Maybe a kid god forbid just doesn't want to play for SJU and chose another local instead?

Also clever of him to realize Whitehead would get injured and that he'd inherit those minutes.

Maybe he sees how little the bench plays.

Last year 7 guys played 20 plus, 8 played 15 plus, 10 played 10 plus. If he's as psychic as you credit him with being in regards to this years minutes we should have gone after him harder for that reason alone.

Don't forget Jordan and Branch missed games so he would have played more in those games which would have increased his average. I also strongly feel that he would have taken more minutes from Branch. I'd say 15-20 is a reasonable estimate, with a likely starting position next year. IMO lack of playing time wasn't the reason that he didn't commit to us.

Moose, quick question for you because you seem to know tho stuff. Say SJU decides to part ways with Lavin at the end of the season do they need to hire a guy affiliated with Under Armour or is UA contract ed with schools not coaches?

No. But UA can help if the coach we go after is also a UA guy.

And kick in cash to the new coach as part of his package deal

Auburn is UA. That would be the most exciting UA coach poach as far as I can tell by looking at the list of schools.

I guess we put this thread on ice until the next game, huh?

No, this is the problem: were playing basically the same type of basketball every game. I truly don't understand why people get so up and down, because this looked just like the way we played against Seton Hall, Butler,Providence and Depaul. The fact we won tonight and at Providence, and lost the others is not cause for extreme reactions. We're actually a very consistent team lately, with the exception of a few threes that dropped a gains the friars.

You either like what you've seen, or you dont. This game to game reaction stuff is nonsense.

Quick question.
I am not a Lavin hater becuase I feel he brought the Johnnies back a little even know it has been messy, however I do feel he does things in his own weird way. I don't know if anyone else has notices this but one of the weird things he does is whenever the Johnnies make a big play on offense like a dunk or go on a little run he will call timeout right after the basket. I have not seen any other coaches do that. Doesn't that ruin momentum for our team? Why does he call timeout? What is his strategy behind that if anyone knows?

How about using the last 2 timeouts back to back, which enabled him to devise the useless strategy of fouling a guy that was automatic from the line. Why not just say "let's add 2 points to Marquette's score and give us the ball under the basket with no timeouts left but still 11 seconds to go." Made no sense to me. I guess he saw that defensive lapse by Marquette that led to Phil's breakaway dunk coming.

Yes, this has been mentioned on the board before. Personally, it drives me nuts. There was one in the second half tonight that was particularly maddening. Crowd was about to ignite and the wizard doused the flames.
