Next Coach?

Gotta be honest here guys.I enjoy reading this site because I see other fans who share the same passion about the program as myself..but I also get disgusted with how some people here just bash Lavin and the program relentlessly. We've just had the best start to a season in 30 years with some very good wins and some people here are still taking shots at him.I'm disgusted with our conference start but I also realize we're only 2 losses out of being in 2nd.Lavin rolled the dice taking this job and so did the school by giving him this contract.I will tell all of you right now if he isn't here then we aren't even in the conversation with most of these recruits. You want to blame someone for roster imbalance?..Norm Roberts!!..10 seniors was Lavin's first roster! So when you go out and have to build a whole new team in the space of a year or 2 guess what??..other players aren't gonna come because they don't see playing time available at their spot(Carrington for example)..we have 4 guards on this roster who played a lot last year..at the forward spot we had Pointer and Sampson leaving wasn't anticipated(you can't really recruit a spot while it's still occupied by a guy who played a ton in his 2 yrs.).We go out and get ADR a big man from local program and Keith Thomas who by the way was also being recruited by some pretty fine academic institutions..program got hit hard and late by the loss of both of them so of course your gonna be thin up front.I'm not trying to give Lavin excuses here but I am trying to be realistic. There is not 1 nba player on this roster so can those of you who continue to post that please stop..your embarrassing yourselves! This group is extremely limited none of them would play a significant role on any of the top teams in the country..yet they fight hard and managed to get themselves up to being ranked 15th..I do think Lavin and staff had something to do with that. Some of you guys see these rankings from these so called "experts" and fall completely in love with them. This class was ranked "3rd" coming in..remember when they played Kentucky and their freshmen?..looked like there was a bit of a gap there right?..and as for recruiting local players sure I'd love to be able to keep the elite..but most of them are gone from the city and off to prep school by the time they turn 16 so staying home isn't really significant to them..when we had Cuffe,King,Showtime,Lawrence,Upshaw,Boothe,Burrell, and Hardy who cared?..no one the teams were terrible!(I give the last 3 a pass on their terrific senior season)..want to pass blame somewhere else?..how about St. John's themselves?..once they started building dorms they couldn't give out stipends anymore to players for housing..you think if they had dorms in Louie's days this wouldn't have hurt him either?I had this conversation this past summer with several former NYC high school stars and they all said they would never have considered St. John's back then without that setup(no campus life!).If you take msg out of the equation this program is fighting with Fordham because there really isn't much else to offer an 18 yr old kid compared to everywhere else.Lavin does give us the best shot at being relevant it just won't happen as fast as some of you would like.

Just curious. What would be a reasonable amount of time to expect a coach to balance the roster (given the situation Norm left)?

maybe break it up with some paragraphs so I don't go blind trying to read it :)

Norm left Lavin with an extremely senior-heavy team that (to all of our surprise) it turned out was a sweet-16 caliber team.
DJ got hurt and we had a terrible match up with two 7footers, but Norm left Lavin with the talent to win right away and make a big splash on the court as he was recruiting his first two classes off the court.

Making the NCAA's with that team helped the recruitment of Sampson obekpa jordan Sanchez etc. Gave Lavin some legitimacy to offer, besides playing time.

Ummm I think winning at Syracuse is pretty significant..beat St. Mary's who is 15-3 and 7-0 in conference..won at Providence who is gonna be tied for first after tonite..don't think that's too shabby but Lavin probably skipped those games right?..I mean it's the only way they could possibly win!!..as for what was Norm left with?..he was left with absolutely nothing and he fought hard and was always a class act but he wasn't getting the program past where he had it..remember when Boeheim said there wasn't 1 Big East player on our roster??..that wasn't so long ago..this program has been in the dump for over a decade because of that piece of garbage Jarvis!Kids today have no clue about the Johnnies glory years..they just know we've sucked during their lifetime. The fact that Lavin has some top talent committing to us despite our recent past and current existing conditions(Carnesseca is a dump!!) is something he should be given a lot of credit for..by the way how is Fordhams rebuild going?..Pecora is facing a unwinnable battle there..appreciate what you have..or we can go back to recruiting 6"5 centers and 6" shooting guards who we got by beating out the local MAAC schools.

All the talent in the world means nothing if you don't make the ncaa's.

God knows I couldn't wait for the Norm error to end but this is year 4 of Lavin's kids and no NCAA's in completely unacceptable but if he gets a powerhouse class then I'm willing to wait a little longer

And honestly no one should ever blame Norm again ( and I blamed him plenty ) because the roster has been loaded with talent the last 4 years that Norm couldn't land if you gave it to him on a silver platter

So the Norm excuse is expired

Syracuse sucks this year. So Lavin has to hang his hat now on St Mary's and Providence? C'mon now

Who cares about cuse and all that. 10-8 in conference and we are going to dance. That means we have to go 9-4 here down the stretch in conference play. It is going to be tough but it always is when you dig a hole like this.

I will add this..I see Zendon Hamilton behind the bench during games..can anyone clarify what his role is?..would love to see him and Felipe involved with the program.

Well played Andrew..I was waiting for that!..just a lifelong fan who wants to see the program be relevant again..I do think it's possible under Lavin.

J4L, you're not making a ton of sense. If you have a solid point it's being lost in the drivel you're throwing out there.

1) no one on this team would play a significant role on any of the top teams in the country? Complete bs. Harrison would start on any team including Kentucky. And obekpa and pointer start on 90% of the teams in D1, including many of the top teams.

2) rankings are pointless because this class was once ranked 3rd and we got killed by kentucky. Foolish argument. The ranking was based on Pelle Sampson and Garret being elidgible.

He's trying to get into coaching. But you can't have 1000 assistant coaches. So he has to be a volunteer assistant to the coaching staff. Not sure if he can work with the players.

Right because we have basketball mastermind Gene Keady taking up a spot on the bench because he has to hold Lav's clip board. What a joke!
