New York Mets 2025 Season

The only way for me to spin something positive is that after losing eight straight games, the Mets still find themselves in the lead for the final wild card spot.

And with that, maybe San Francisco, Arizona, and Cincinnati tails off a bit.

Sproat gave us 6 shutout innings yesterday before we fell apart. It’s the “veteran” stiffs who are killing us.

That third or fourth start is where rookie pitchers lose the advantage of not being seen. Hopefully that doesn't happen to him, but I think it will.

Interesting wrinkle with McLean is that he is 12 1/3 innings away from losing his rookie status. If he retains his rookie status and wins Rookie of the Year next season (would be the betting favorite), the Mets would be awarded an extra draft pick after the first round. Looks like he would naturally pitch 2 more game this regular season unless the Mets wanted to line him up for the Wild Card start.

That is a pretty big deal for the Mets as a Competitive Balance Tax team that loses 10 spots annually on its first pick and loses its second round pick if it signs any free agent who received a qualifying offer.

He's not, because the Mets waited past the August 15th deadline to bring him up.

“Rookie Eligibility

Definition

A player shall be considered a rookie unless he has exceeded any of the following thresholds in a previous season (or seasons):

• 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues.

• 45 total days on an active Major League roster during the Championship Season (excluding time on the Injured List).”

A plain reading of the rule seems to be that these are independent ways to lose rookie status, no?

If we go .500 from here on out we probably make it in, but that is a huge if with this team. We haven’t been a .500 team for months. They need to treat every game like a playoff game. We need Holmes/Manae to be a 2 headed beast and for Senga it give us two ace starts.
