New Graphic Identity and Brand Story

I like the current logo but also like Concept B. A and C should be rejected.

Just completed mine. I really hope those potential logos are just very crude form and not exact. I picked the script one though because it looks way better than our blocky and way too long "STJOHN'S" current logo. Logos look weird in a rectangular form unless it's just the team name in script or spelled out in a certain font like Georgetown. I suggested that the script SJ logo would look more like the "Jays" logo from Creighton. They have the right idea with the font.

For those of you who are curious and didn't take the survey or don't have time, these were the choices presented. I assume it's just general ideas though and they will be polished much more by a professional.

Concept A: the "S" reminds me too much of NC State, Michigan State and Syracuse. The J is higher than all the other letters and looks stupid IMO.

Concept B: my vote...I like the script...classy and timeless. I just wish the "John's" part was directly next to the "St." instead of being partially underneath it. Again, think along the lines of Creighton's "Jays" logo in that font but with our colors saying "St. John's" and I think it would look great.

Concept C: this reminds me way too much of the old 90's NY Giants logo. Blocky, and outdated looking. The J extending out looks dumb IMO.

Given those options, I'll stick with the current one

As you said, A looks familiar and C looks outdated. B is the only one I'd even consider replacing what we currently have.

I would take the current one or Concept B. Get rid of A and C.

Those choices are all terrible. We really have to do better. I have a SJU baseball hat that has the old SJU logo (reminiscent of the St Louis Cardinals logo) that is great.

I prefer concept A as this is the only one that resonates well across all sports. Concept B looks like a baseball logo to me, and if its something that Creighton already has, then the one originality and differentiation goes out the window. Concept C looks like something dug up from the 80's. I also agree that Johnnies is just as awful as Bonnies. REDSTORM!!!!! and THUNDERBIRD!!!!!

I like the script also Joe. Concept A looks too much like NC State as you said and concept C looks too much like Dayton (it's too A-10 looking).

This survey seriously has me questioning the direction of those in charge of making these decisions.

First of all, why are they even considering Johnies as the new name of the team?

Second, do they not understand that Red Storm is horrible and nobody has ever accepted it?

Third, for those "St. John's" fonts, all three of the proposed fonts A,B,C look extremely dated. This isn't 1994 anymore.

I see poor decisions being made once again unless they bring in the right people to help.

Wow. Three bad options. That's a disappointment.

Without question, the current logo is stronger than any of the new ideas.

Who is heading up this project, a fourth grade class? I like the current logo, but the other three are horrible. Very disappointing.

Remember, these are the same folks that gave us the Red Tuxedo man, the Beast (that lion-cow thing), and now Thunderchicken. We change logos every other year, have no fight song, and are likely to be renamed the St. John's Johnies. God help us!

I think of the four choices offered, the best one to me is the current one by a mile!

My feeling is that although I hate the Red Storm name, and opine that those new logos look that they were created with a graphic art budget of about $2000, if we had just won back to back NCAA basketball championships no one would be critical of the damned mascot or name. Give me a break - a bean bag Orange represents Syracuse instead of a Native American, and no one gives a rats tail.

Improve the damned product - whether they be athletics (secondary) or academics (primary), or a novel idea - make it a real Catholic School that kids from Long Island will actually want to attend, and then you've done something.

I just did the survey. No chance at going back to Redmen, not even mentioned as an option, only Redstorm and Johnnies (hate it as a primary but never minded it as a secondary as Rafferty and some columnist use it.

Despite the shock of many of my friends, I didn't mind the name change despite my love of the Redmen. The most important thing to me was the name St. John's. I would however hate Johnnies as a Primary.

I picked the current logo as the most favorable with Concept B (script version) as the second choice.

I guess I went against the grain in one aspect: I chose Johnnies. I know it may not be the best primary name, but where else can you really go? Johnnies is what most people know us by, not Red Storm. When marketing you go by recognition, even if it sounds weird to say St. John's Johnnies. As I've said before, this issue can easily be averted by calling us the Johnnies of St. John's. Make the mascot named Johnny and make it a human. The thunderbird is so played out...do you know how many bird mascots there are? A red bird with a lightning bolt on its stomach...wow, so creative. Look at Providence with their mascot...creative and very professional looking. It was even in a Sportscenter commercial. I'm not sure what "Johnny" would actually look like, but that's why there are professionals to consult.

Anyway, I think people should remember with the logos that those choices are more than likely just very crude generalizations and not the actual choices for logos. They just want to see what kinds of styles people like, not necessarily the exact ones you see there. They all look like clipart from Window's 95.

I'm still surprised that they only gave the choices as Red Storm vs. Johnnies. I would have thought there would be lots of options after consulting. By the way, someone mentioned the old baseball logo similar to the STL Cardinals...that was awesome! I don't know why they ever did away with it. Looked so legit.

Pretty sure baseball team still uses that.

From the games I've been to they've never worn it. It looks like it's just the interlocking SJ on the hats. Have not seen the STL Cards looking hats in like 10 yrs.

Isn't an interlocking SJ a close resemblence to the Cardinals? Otherwise what are you referring to?

I mean the "SJ" with the T combined with the J that we have right now. That's what baseball uses on their hats as the logo. Not the Cardinals style interlocking letters from 10 yrs ago. I wish it would make a comeback.
