New Graphic Identity and Brand Story

I still don't know why we can't go back to the Redmen?? It's the name that gets consensus from everybody. It is the name the fans and alums want. There's no need to link it to native Americans. I don't know why it should be insulting in any way as long as there is no native mascot? Everybody says its not going to happen and I know it probably won't, but I just don't see the rationale of avoiding it. Just reinvent it without insulting anybody.

Amen, if the name is based on school colors and we don't bring back Chief Blackjack (my favorite of all the mascots) where is the harm? Of course the women's teams would have to get another name or stay with Red Storm. But you are right, it will never happen but we can still keep the Redmen chant alive at the games ; )

I'm amazed and delighted that the official communiqué refers to us as SJU. Is it kosher to do so? Is this an announcement in and of itself or an error on the part of the part of the V-P for Marketing and Communications?. Will there be repercussions from St. Joseph's?

Nicknames, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. I find the Red Storm repulsive but "Johnnies" à propos and rolling off one's tongue.

Can call the women the "Lady Redmen" or the "Johnnies"... ;-)

No way Redmen will ever be used again. People are way too sensitive about the Native American stuff. Even if you don't have a Native American mascot, the politically correct crowd that dominates America will never allow it.

Washington Redskins, in the PC capitol of the country.

The Redskins are becoming Exhibit A on why we will never return to the Redmen. It is no longer acceptable and the 'Skins are going to take hits until they buckle. No matter how committed the owner may be, it won't fly for much longer.

For clarity, I'm an alum from the Redmen era. It's still the most recognizable name for our teams. I loved the name and icons. I've never warmed to the Red Storm or any of our logos/mascots.

But I also live in a part of the continent with a large Aboriginal population. Over the years, I've come to appreciate why the Redmen name can't continue. I still have plenty of Redmen gear that I love, but would never dream of wearing in public anymore. (And, yes, I know the origins of the name have nothing to do with Indians.)

So I've moved on from the Redmen debate. I'm pumped to see what UA will bring to the table. I see no way they waste a full year of a key six-year deal doing nothing. I fully expect them to make some noise this season.

So when are we supposed to stop using #STJBB and start using #SJUBB?? does anyone know, i think they have made that part very confusing haha.

.@StJohnsBBall is the new handle for the men's basketball team. Also trying out #stjohnsbb hashtag along with #stjbb.

#stjohnsbb is stupid. It's nearly twice as long as the old one. Why not just #sjubb.

Because of St. Joe's

St. Joe's doesn't use it. They use #THWND for "The Hawk Will Never Die". We are SJU now so there should be no reason to bow down to them, especially for a hashtag that they don't use.

But they do use www.sju.edu. I think the purpose of STJ vs. SJU branding is to not inadvertently drive web traffic to St. Joe's website (www.sju.edu). I think St. John's discovered the internet right after Al Gore claimed to have invented it.

St. John's Johnnies??? .... The Johnnies is a nickname not a mascot, two different things are getting mixed up IMO.

Marketing dept. has got me worried.

I've always said that the St. Bonaventure Bonnies have the worst (and softest) nickname in college sports. If we go to the Johnnies I think I know who will run a close second to them.

Just completed mine. I really hope those potential logos are just very crude form and not exact. I picked the script one though because it looks way better than our blocky and way too long "STJOHN'S" current logo. Logos look weird in a rectangular form unless it's just the team name in script or spelled out in a certain font like Georgetown. I suggested that the script SJ logo would look more like the "Jays" logo from Creighton. They have the right idea with the font.

For those of you who are curious and didn't take the survey or don't have time, these were the choices presented. I assume it's just general ideas though and they will be polished much more by a professional.

Concept A: the "S" reminds me too much of NC State, Michigan State and Syracuse. The J is higher than all the other letters and looks stupid IMO.

Concept B: my vote...I like the script...classy and timeless. I just wish the "John's" part was directly next to the "St." instead of being partially underneath it. Again, think along the lines of Creighton's "Jays" logo in that font but with our colors saying "St. John's" and I think it would look great.

Concept C: this reminds me way too much of the old 90's NY Giants logo. Blocky, and outdated looking. The J extending out looks dumb IMO.

Even if they make the horrible decision of calling the team the Johnnies. I will refuse that name always. It's as bad as the Bonnies, the Peacocks, the Orange. Red Storm all the way. Johnnies? Sounds like a little boys team.

Given those options, I'll stick with the current one

As you said, A looks familiar and C looks outdated. B is the only one I'd even consider replacing what we currently have.
