New ACC and MSG Rumor

Take it for what it's worth. I can't seem to get the link to work but someone on the PC board claims to have spoken to an MSG exec who claims that the ACC to MSG is a done deal once the current contract with Greensboro expires. Could be all a bunch of fluff but thought it might garner some discussion.

It's also been posted on the SU site but I can't get the PC link to work on there either

On a unrelated note, it seems as if we have a few PC fans pulling for us ; )

ACC in the Garden would give Syracuse a huge advantage over the likes of Duke and UNC. I'm not sure if that will fly with the classic ACC schools. Obviously the product--especially the last few games--will be amazing, but I don't think the ACC at MSG would draw more fans as the new Big East could with STJ based in NYC and several northeast schools. I believe a large % of the tickets are disbursed equallly between all schools in the conference. Fans of schools like Miami couldn't be bothered with attending games at their own campus...forget traveling 1500 miles to NYC.

This guy says that the MSG Exec said that MSG is very excited about the relationship with the Big East Tourney continuing and then he supposedly says that the ACC deal for their tournament is almost done for after their contract with Grennsboro expires? How can both statements be true? MSG can't have the two tournaments simultaneously. So, either the ACC is in and the Big East is out and they dont want to continue their relationship with the Big East or they do and MSG is not taking the ACC. I think the better St. Johns becomes the less of chance the ACC has of getting their tournament into MSG.

the acc has eclipsed the big east as THE basketball conference in the country. i can see msg bringing in both conferences beginning with quarterfinals...putting the big east on in the afternoons and the acc in the evenings. the acc has the best commissioner in the country while the big east went from thumb suckers to no one.

It is near impossibly to host both the same week let alone the same day.

I think it could be done rather easily. The ACC and Big East tourneys already end on different days...just stagger the starts a little more. The new Big East has only 10 teams right now. Even if it jumps up to 14 by 2016, that is still only four rounds and four days. The championship game can be the nightcap to the first day of the ACC opening round or the day or weekend before the ACC jumps off.

They end one day apart. And in theory now the ACC will be bigger so almost flip flop the length of the two. Remember there are 2 pro sports teams that also call the Garden home.

Very true about the two pro sports teams that call MSG home. Even a pedestrian attendance figure for either team is better than what either conference tournament could bring. There are a few years to plan for this, I don't think scheduling will be a huge hassle. The events staff at MSG is awesome.

Has any arena held two conference tournaments in succession or back to back before.

ACC did not get better as a conference. They brought in real good teams that had been members of another conference. It's a bit different then Wake and G.Tech becoming good teams. ACC tourny ends up in the North, a bunch of fans down there going to be pissed Syracuse and Pitt. were ever invited. No doubt many ACC fans look back at the 9 team league as the good old days. That was a pretty good league with some identity. Having the tourny in MSG gonna hurt the fans who don't have that extra money to burn. I can't see it being done as a regular thing, and can't figure why they would need it. Like they care about Syracuse fans?

The Orleans Arena, in LV, hosts both the West Coast Conference and the WAC in eight consecutive days. To do it, they start the WCC on the last Sat. of the regular season, something the major conferences might be adverse to doing.

They end one day apart because that is what ESPN wanted.

MSG will try to jam as much as they can because despite all of the winter sports including hockey and pro basketball that can last into the late spring based on playoff runs, MSG is still dark for,a food, portion of the summer (notwithstanding the summer construction which I believe ends this year). So they will try to maximize as much profit as they can during their peaks season.

In the bigger picture though, it's actually good for New York. This year you could not get a hotel room anywhere in the city during the Big East
Tournament. A-10 had theirs at Barclay's just before. So that had an effect. Now jam another with all southern tourists, the City will be hopping.

couldn't disagree more. it's like saying we aren't a better team, we just brought in better players and a better coach.

the leadership of the acc beat the doo doo out of the big east leadership. now it's the better conference and it's throwing more dirt on ours.. as far as travel??? miami fans didn't have a problem when they were in the big east. va tech? louisville? notre dame? it's new york with everything it has to offer..

When has Miami ever traveled well? UM doesn't even get fans to attend home games. The school averaged a ten year high this year of just over 5,000 fans per game. That is less 1/3 of what CREIGHTON averages the last 20 years. UM averaged 3,946 last year.

Too boot if the ACC gets in at MSG it bumps up their exposure with the top kids in the NYC area. If they can make the scheduling work there are a lot of benefits. I still have trouble seeing Duke and UNC admin wanting the tourney out of their geographical area. This just goes to show that even with all the new arenas being built lately MSG and NYC still hold their importance in the world of basketball.

Most of the ACC tournament will be during the week. How many fans will travel for that? NYC is home to plenty of alumni from each of the schools, but I can't imagine very many fans living out of the area would be willing to travel during the work week for a conference tournament. Most big fans will just wait a week and travel to the tournament game(s).

The ACC tourament at the Garden just seems misplaced to me.

The ACC would outdraw the Big East Tournament and it wouldn't even be close IMO. Syracuse, Duke and UNC would all outdraw the top attending Big East school (which would likely be Georgetown and not SJU, at least how it stands now). Even a school like Virginia, which has a pretty large New York base, would outdraw most of the large Big East schools. Schools like that don't NEED to travel fans because they have a huge base here already that would outdraw the like of St. John's.

And for those talking about how the bottom of the ACC would draw poorly at MSG, they would still FAR outdraw the likes of Creighton and Butler. Business wise, MSG would drop everything if the ACC came calling.

You may well be correct about the overall attendance, but you are way off thinking that the bottom ACC teams would outdraw Creighton. Creighton travels tremendously well and they draw like crazy. In fact, in 2012 Creighton outdrew Ga Tech, BC, and Miami COMBINED by over 3,000 fans per game.
