NCAA Tourney Thread

Love Gonzaga. Love Mark Few. Love the fact that, like redken, irrationally, I think of Zaga as an extension of the BE. Smaller Catholic school, I guess.

I'd love to see Gonzaga win it all, two years in a row that smallish private universities win, over those gigantic State schools.

Hey, who doesn't like Bing Crosby, if you do you're against apple pie and the American flag.

I'm rooting for Gonzaga even though if NC wins it all, I might finish in the money in my Bracket Pool.

Do you guys not also absolutely loathe Gonzaga.

Never forget 2000 or 2011

I cannot say that I loathe Gonzaga. I think Mark Few is a great college coach. His teams are always well prepared and play good defense. He has had some good players but I don't think he has access to overwhelming talent. Sadly, in many ways they remind me of what we used to be and where I am praying Coach CM takes us again. I don't think too many teams want to play the Zags. They are a tough out.

Zags are in same league as us when it comes to the final four. It is football conferences versus non-football run leagues.

It would be nice to see the money leagues lose two straight years.

Cool story about De’Aaron Fox recruitment:

Great story. Hard not to root for a kid like this. Wouldn't mind if he ended up on Knicks although Phil Jackson probably hasn't seen him. Smack dab in the middle of the NCAA T Phil is out in LA for a statue dedication to Shaq while the Laker President Magic was out scouting. Heck there were even games at the Garden so rickety old Phil wouldn't even of had to travel. No wonder why the Knicks are such a mess.

Frank Martin took five years to build a team the right way. No one game and out.

I was amazed that this will be first Elite Eight for South Carolina, considering the great players they had historically like Kevin Joyce, Dunleavy, Roche, Winters, Owens, English, etc under Frank McGuire. Although I think in those days they were in ACC & only winner of ACC Tourney got to dance.

Good article by Frank Martin and his program at SC

It's a great story and a great run the last 4 games but it's a program that wasn't even getting votes in the last poll, finished 4th in the weakest hoops conference of the 6 majors (or is it 5) and entered the tournament with double digit losses and an RPI of 43. Martin is a good redemption story now that he's not nearly as Mike RIce-ian, and he coaches defense like few can, but it's still a mediocre program. Does St Johns have to get back to Lavin level mediocrity before reaching the great heights we all want? Sure, but if it gets stuck where So Carolina is, and they wouldn't have been in the top 1/2 of the ACC, BE B12 or probably B1G or P12, there will be calls for Mullin's head. PS this is year 5 and first dance, after 1 NIT last year.

Great atmosphere at the Garden. These teams play great defense and the crowd is louder than anything I have heard for a college basketball game in years. Rooting for the Cocks.

Love Frank Martin. His stare is right up there with the great, late Pat Summit's stare.

I remember I thought he was crazy to take the SC job, didn't think it was a better gig than KState and didn't think he could win there. But man he is a great coach. Even if he seems like a psycho on the sidelines lol

He's the son of Cuban immigrants and was the first of his family born in the US, in Miami. While a student at FIU, he held a part-time job as a bouncer at a Miami nightclub. Quit that after he was shot at by a group who he was ejecting for fighting.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I take it all back. I guess any Final Four, even with a mediocre team, is worth another 10 years of mediocrity.

Best chance in a long time for seeing a fresh face win it all . . . which probably means Kentucky or UNC will end up winning anyway.

Huge shot by Monk (again why up by three with less 14 seconds to go why don't you foul), but no panic in UNC big play and pass from Pinson to Maye who nailed the shot. Not bad from a former walk-on (although recruited by some D1 schools).

Two close and good games today.

MARCH MADNESS IS FANTASTIC!!!!!
