NCAA Tournament Thread

Stick a fork in Georgetown, they're done.
Let's see if Creighton does better in the tournament. They lost by a similar margin last week.

I was surprised about all the optimism about Georgetown, especially after their run through the BET.  They just are not a very good team. Having watched Colorado play a bunch of times this season, I figured this would be a major challenge for the Hoyas. Unfortunately this has come to fruition. What an absolute drubbing.

Georgetown winning or losing doesn't prove anything but the fact is the League wasn't very good this year. Certainly nowhere near B12 and B10. 4 teams in but really 3 since Gtown doesn't get in unless they win the BET. So in reality they only had 3 NCAA quality teams. Furthermore no sweet 16 seeds. Marquette and Xavier underachieved.

And remember this the only time any BE school has made it to Sweet 16 or further since new BE in 2014 was the 2 NC runs by Nova.  That's it. Nova and all others in all the other years have not gotten past Roundof 32.

I had only witnessed Colorado twice.....  Once in the regular season (I didn't see the entire game) and in the Pac-12 Tournament final last week (I saw the second half).  So, I was only somewhat familiar of their game.  I knew they had a solid, experienced point guard, size, could shoot and defend.

In regards to Georgetown, people tend to get caught up in small samples.  It happens.  Frankly, I sort of felt they were in trouble once they became the sexy pick.

Btw all the more reason why it is important for league stature for SJU and Gtown to be consistently good. Combine that with UCONN and Nova and the league becomes that much more formidable.

Well the Georgetown run through the Big East Tournament was a nice story... but it’s getting late early here at Hinkle.

Gives you an idea of how weak the Big East was this year, and should Georgetown lose handily, is a poor reflection on our league.   It's not a huge leap to think it diminishes our 10-9Big East record.
I don’t know... to me it doesn’t really diminish anything. Some conferences have had an awful start to this tournament. I think people fall into the trap of trying to make sweeping statements about certain conferences based on what happens to their teams in a single elimination crapshoot type tournament

it’s fun fodder for us to talk about as the games play out. But a couple weeks from now no one will remember any of it
My point is that Georgetown in a solid year for the BE would not have beaten the top 3 teams in league Villanova, Seton Hall and Creighton.    You're right it's fun for fodder, but as Lawmanfan said the other day, none of us really know that much about basketball talent anyway, so I'll go with that.

I will say though, that while we were playing well, highly regarded people within our program thought we were as good as anyone in the country.   Again, can't really refute people who really know what they are talking about, but I will debate those who don't.

I think people had the fantasy that Georgetown was similar to the 9-9 UCONN team that ripped through the BET to win a national championship.

With now only three teams from the BE remaining I am going to ask this Forum's forgiveness for what I am about to say. Please don't ban me or put a pox on me and all my ancestors. But.......I will be rooting for dreaded UCONN to win tonight. That was very hard to type and think it even as I was typing! I would love to see the remaining BE teams go through to the next round even at the horror of actually hoping for a UCONN win. I will do my penance for this mortal sin later.

Some people did have that fantasy.  I even heard someone on the radio several days ago say as much.  I guess it was possible, but I never thought that.  That UConn team was playing solidly until they hit a rough patch during the latter stages of the conference season.  They got their mojo back once the Big East Tournament got cranked up and continued it in the dance.  They also had Kemba Walker.

Fordham, agree BE hasn't fared well in Dance over last 10 years. However, above isn't quite accurate; Xavier made Sweet 16 in 2015 and Elite Eight in 2017

Tonight, I'm also rooting for UConn as they're playing a Big Ten opponent (Maryland).  I guess I don't dislike UConn as much as several others.  Now, there's a chance I'll root against 'em next round.  /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

WRT to 2011 UCONN they were also a 3 seed, big difference from a 12. Shows how ridiculously strong the old BE was.

You are getting close to being forced to wear Mike Zaun's old medium St Johns shirt territory :)

People forget that when UConn won with Kemba in 2014, they got extremely lucky that they basically had two home games at MSG in the sweet 16 and elite 8.

Walker wasn't on the 2014 team.

If I am going to root for UCONN it would be that they leave the conference and pay their hefty exit fee.

Spoken like someone who didn't have to put up with 20 buses of PBR swilling yahoos (before it was hip) once a year at the garden during their previous BE tenure.  Especially when they first started experiencing some success.  Talk about a fan base that wasn't going to act like they'd been there before and expected to again.  Ha

PS I'll root for them tonight too.
