NCAA Tournament Thread

Some records aren't meant to be broken.

Great game. Both teams have a lot to be proud about. Baylor was just too fast and well prepared.

Hopefully with Baylor winning it all it can stop some with their obsession of you have to have a good back to the basket 6'10+ big man to be a good team, this isn't 1980.  Baylor starts 4 guards and frequently plays with a small lineup where the biggest guy on the court for them is 6'5 Mark Vital. Their starting center is 6'10, however he only averages 3 PPG and only plays 15 MPG.  In this day and age good guards win at the college level it's been proven year after year. If you want to win big, go out and get you multiple all-league caliber guards.

Mark Few looks absolutely sick over tonight's game. Tough to keep coming close and this year being undefeated and favored in championship game only to fall short.

That backcourt of Baylor’s is just too much to handle. They were all super quick and can knock down long range at a 40% clip. They were equally as tenacious on D and make the Timme screen and roll game not work.

Anyone know if Hasahn French  wants to do a fifth year?

That guy is absolutely relentless. Really gets after it every play. Has a nose for the ball and truly does remind me of a Anthony Glover type. Baylor was just far to quick and athletic for Gonzaga. You can tell Kispert and Timme were bothered by speed and athleticism. Baylor is still Pretty big. Thamba is 6'10 245, Vital weighs 250, Tchatchoua is 6'8 245lbs, and Mayer is 6'9 225lbs. They are big boys who get after it. I don't think any of our bigs combined weight add up to Vital.

But yes, guards with experience usually always come out on top in college basketball. Good junior and senior guards are so important come tourney time, which is why i was so annoyed to hear that Greg is in the portal. Guys like him are essential to keep around for their last year for experience and leadership.

Their bigs were able to play with anybody else’s frontline while their backcourt was able to toy with any other teams guards. Did they have massive size? no. But they weren’t small, and last night vs Gonzaga they had the size advantage over Timmee and Kispert. They certainly had the toughness edge.

They have what we lack up front: 2 serviceable, but not spectacular, bigs in Thomba and Tchachwa(SIC), who they sub in and out. Together they get 35 MPG out of them. Then they have Vital, who is Glover on steroids(not literally). And Mayer who goes 6'9". They also have a 7' on the bench who can give them a few minutes when needed. Their back court also has nice size and is extremely physical.  They have plenty of size and depth. They play the big men as needed.

Massive length, no.   But they are built like trucks and outmuscled Gonzaga on the boards again and again.

Baylor plays nose to nose on every possession.   Thank God, you know who isn't in the portal, he'd fit in there perfectly.

Mitchell is Posh with a money jump shot. He’s also 22 years old though.

I agree and Tchachwa could be blueprint for type of player Stanley is for us. 6’8 245 but plays as big as anyone.

Baylor , under Drew , has been building a BB Dynasty for several years and it’s built .  The Bears demolished nearly every team they played in the tourney . Many were very good teams in their own right .  Gonzaga showed they were beatable  against UCLA , which was a great game in itself .
Suggs was harassed all game and like other Guards that played against Baylor , he made some mistakes . Mistakes the Bears forced him into .  Gonzaga has a great team and had a great year . But , it showed that going unbeaten in their League and through the season didn’t make them the best team . Maybe they should consider a stronger Conference than  the one they are in ?           A.       Anyway , these 2 teams and many others gave us a look at what we need to build here , if we are ever to be National Contenders . But , first  BE Champs .

IMHO it was a situation where Baylor was primed to play after a season in the Big 12 and not being challenged in their Final 4 game, whereas Gonzaga suffered from not playing in a better league and seemed mentally and physically worn out coming off of the UCLA game. The game was a snapshot in time, but I suspect if they played 10 games the Zags would win 6 of them.  It was disappointing - I had expected a good game, but there was a clear mismatch in the readiness to play of the two teams.  It happens.

Totally agree LMF. When picking a winner in my bracket this year I went over both Baylor and Gonzaga's schedule. Baylor obviously had the way tougher schedule and were still beating very good teams by double digits. If the didnt have the covid pause, they could have had a shot at going undefeated as well possibly. The way they handled their tough openents proved to me that they were the best team. Gonzaga may have a strong non conference schedule but their conference just doesn't equate to any of the power conferences and it really hurts them IMO.
