(NCAA-Game 1, Dayton) - Arizona St., Wed. Mar. 20, 9:10 pm, TruTV / 970 AM

The most frustrating SJU team ever.

The only positive I could come up with this morning. Last time in the tourney 2015 - Mets to the World Series. Last time we won a game in the tourney 2000 Mets to the World Series. Last time to a Regional-Mets to NLCS. Therefore a fun Met season is coming. Brodie says "Come get Us" (We should Copyright and make T-shirts-to cover MJMaher's angry gambling debts).

Of course now that I say this, I remeber how pissed off I am at both Game 1s of those World Series and now I am depressed again.

We forced 21 turnovers
Outrebounded a 'bigger' team which we never do
Ponds and LJ had 25 and 19 respectively

And we still lost

Let that sink in

Free throw misses and unforced turnovers. Needed Johnny Mac around to avoid those tennis mistakes.

Was SJU the worst team in Dayton? Tough to tell but possibly.

They were the only team that showed up completely unprepared.

They were the only team to not have a lead at any point of the 4 games.

Perhaps most astoundingly, almost every (and maybe every) other team had a big that would be SJU's best. Including the 16s.

20 more field goal attempts - 40% more field goal attempts! - and lost the game comfortably.

Certainly can't blame last night completely on the staff. They weren't 3 players who went 1-15 from 3 or the players that seemed to forget how to pass and catch. However that we were in a position to have 3 players take 15 3s and miss 14 of them in the biggest game of the year and just kept launching them right until the end without any apparent adjustment is illustrative of the broader season.

The play was largely disjointed, but the players played absurdly hard even if not always effective right until the end, which was also illustrative of the broader season.

Bizarre and disappointing end to a bizarre season. Better to have made that game and played like that though than not make it at all, I think. So at least there's that.

And we were suppose to be a good outside shooting team, frankly I think if Barry R was our coach we would be in a better place after 4 yrs

Hate to say it, but this game demonstrated why Xavier should have been chosen over us.
Lots of blame to go around, but regarding those who criticize players for lack of energy: perhaps they take their cues from their head coach, who prefers to sit on the bench for half the game.

Making NCAA and losing unfortunately constitutes success around here. Just saying.
The play in games dont count as making the NCAA tournament. The real tournament starts today, you can still fill out your bracket which means the tournament hasnt actually started yet. 4 years no tournament with a 5th right around the corner, its time to move on. Whats the point of giving him another year and then firing him? Delaying the inevitable for what? Dont give me that bullsh*t of whos going to want to come here, there are plenty of actual basketball coaches out there. I can name 20+ coaches who can coach circles around anyone on this staff.

Not just lost but never led at any point.

In fact I think of the 5 losses they never led at any point in the Xavier game t home, Marquette and last night. Except for maybe 2-0 at home to Xavier.

Watching last night's game hurt a lot.
My wife felt so bad for me as I grew more and more silent the more the game turned against us.
I don't know what to say, but with Clark and Herron so off, there was no way to hang in with this ASU team which itself was deeply flawed.
Many of the comments from the broadcast crew and the studio crew hit home. I hate to say it but Seth Davis certainly called this one.

Thanks for the warning.

We lost last night. ASU didn't beat us. Neither team deserved to move on the way that game was played. If we even had a mediocre game where we hit a few more of our 3s and made a couple of more of our missed bunnies and lastly hit a few more of our FTs, we win this one by 15 plus.

Dear OSR,

Everyone is frustrated and unhappy. Contrary to what Mike Zaun believes, all posters are very disappointed in how the season turned out. Some are just not yet prepared to grab their pitchforks. However, we ask once again that you and others please refrain from Swearing and calling the players names. You could just say 2 kids shot 1-17, without calling them derogatory names. I am sure Clark feels just horrible that this is how his college career ended. No need to further crap on the kid.
Thank you very much for your future cooperation.

Don't know how you can call Heron soft. Drew at least two big time charges in the second half, one of which came when he had 4 fouls.

His shooting was terrible, but he made tough plays out there.

Oh ok north, so I'll just call them ass, is that better. It's not my fault that their soft, it's just their makeup I guess. I wont back track from calling them how I see them.
As I said last night I hope heron goes with clark and that's sticking no matter who likes it. You got your opinion north and I got mine..
So again yes they are soft. Only thing I take back is the "ass" part.
Don't think Heron is soft at albyl, just very broken against ASU.
Nah? And how many times we heard the term going through the motion?
Back in the day and hanging out, if anyone said that you'd be laughed out a d saying you sound like a girl.

Old school, before it happened I told "she who must be obeyed", he is gonna miss all three free throws, and then couldn't believe my prediction was right.
That was one of the worst basketball games I have ever watched. And then I come here to commiserate and see some of the worst commentary you could imagine. Now look, I am not happy about this season obviously. To me it was a complete disappointment, and Mullin and his team underperformed for the last 6 weeks. But all this “fire the coach, bring in a competent coach” is so stupid. You all would jump up and down for that maniac Hurley who coached his team up so much that they almost lost to that atrocity we put out there today. ASU was almost as bad as SJU was tonight.

So go cry and whine about the coach. Pretend you won’t be a fan anymore. And please leave if that’s how you feel. I choose to continue to support this team through thick and thin. As bad as Mullin has been, he did not miss 10+ free throws today, he did not throw the ball away unforced 10+ times, he did not miss wide open shots and layups. Yes the team was poorly constructed, but with a half decent effort by our guys today should have been a win.
. If you aren’t already , you are going to be a excellent Lawyer! You made a strong Case for the debacle of last night’s game and presented evidence that only the most Anti group could refute . Lumping the last 20 years of bad basketball around Mullin’s neck is really low . But , many here like to pile it on . How can any Coach be responsible for 2 starters shooting g 1-17 and scoring 6 points collectively plus making many , many turnovers . I think both, Clark and Heron have been great kids and the kind of student athlete we want at St John’s but , they had a nightmare last night and Clark’s was a 2 game donut . Justifying him playing out of position doesn’t offset his last 4-5 games .just bad . Simon is a enigma as a player . Great Defendrer , Ball Stealer, Rebounder and great attitude , gives 100 percent every game . But , he is a terrible shooter from any range , poor free throw shooter and not a great handle . Measuring his offense vs defense , it’s probably a Wash . He saves about 10 points a game defensively but.misses about the same number of points by not converting . It’s a fact . One that can be justified but , only with the other starters picking up the slack , Heron and Clark didn’t last night and I knew they are crestfallen about their performance . You could see Mustapha’s dejection all game . Hurley as Coach ? Really ? He’s a lunatic on the sidelines and is worse on the Officials than Mullin has ever been . He has some good players but , we lost the game last night , Arizona State didn’t win it . They tried mightily to give it to us , but we said No ! Frankly , I would not be happy with either Hurley , Danny or Bobby . The PAC 10 is and has been a soft and overrated Conference for years . Winning there is no great accomplishment . UCONN was awful this year . And , Danny seems as volatile as Bobby . I don’t see UCONN being a National Contender anytime soon . We need better Shooters and several Big Men who can score and rebound . I do agree that stocking most of your team with Transfers is not a Winning formula , unless you get a impact level player. Our recruiting has to bring in capable freshman who can contribute , even in their first year , even as role or bench players ., Let’s face it , unless a near miracle occurs , chasing the top 25-50 ranked player seems out of reach . With Nova being a exception , most BE Teams are not going to out recruit the one and done schools or the Big State Universities for talent , so our Recruiting has to focus on the rising 4 star player who can shoot and rebound . You can’t win in the BE with a team of all slashers because you will be Zoned to defeat .
