My pitch for Chris Mullin as Coach

Jeff Allen shot 56 percent from the floor for his career. His last two years at SJU he shot 62 percent and 58 percent. So I guess when he wan't muffing 8 footers and having the worst hands anyone has ever seen he was kind of okay.

Yes, he was an all-time great.

We are Nostradamus predicts Cluess.

I don't even think SJU is considering him a serious candidate

Like when the Mets are linked to big name free agents then start Wilmer Flores at short and sign John Mayberry jr..

I stand by Cluess or Masiello when the music stops will be our next coach

For a couple years there Louie wasn't sure who was better him or Wennington

At least Mayberry Jr. looks good this spring.

Yah, because that's what I said.

Nice post but my pitch against him:

No coaching or recruiting experience.

Still, it'd likely be a solid hire with great upside if he finds success. Doubt he'd bolt at first opportunity like Mas.

For one of those years there was no difference between them.

10.6 / 6.6 / 58 %
11.7 / 5.7 / 59 %

Mullin is the cream of the choices that are being thrown out. Who better to attract players with NBA aspirations than a man who has a lifetime of success there.

Mullin made it because he's a gym rat and a relentless worker...not because he had the best gifts in the world. He has been coached by all time greats. That's surely rubbed off on him.

Sure, I'd prefer the Shaka Smarts of the world as a surer bet, but they aren't giving us a sniff. Be realistic here.

Would prefer a guy with coaching experience

Where did Lou coach before Saint John's?

Seven years at St. Anns Academy HS* starting 1950 and then eight years as an Assistant at SJU to Coach Lapchick. Louie became Head Coach when Lapchick retired in 1965. 15 years solid experience before he got the reins.

* Louie's first HS game as a coach in 1950 was vs. St. Nicholas of Tolentine from the Bronx, coached by Rocco Valvano (father of Jimmy). The game was at MSG, preceding a Knicks game. Knicks were coached then by Lapchick. Source: Louie's biography 1988.

And which candidate for the current vacancy is the beneficiary of Dr. Fun's considerable support?

Norm was an assistant at some of the best programs in the country. I don't count assistant coaching as relevant.

No one will ever accuse Mullin of being lazy. He's a workaholic for crissakes.

Whether mullin will work out as a successful head coach, im not 100 percent sure... However this BS that just cuz these kids are 16 or 17 that they don't know who Mullin is is just plain ignorant.

Who won the game?

You reminded me of Mullin's recovery history and as someone who next month will mark 50 years of working with addictive disease, and who has been trained by and himself trained people in recovery, I think it is a tremendous asset in working with young people. While a different problem, Bobby Hurley's recovery from a career ending accident is also indicative of understanding what it is to pick yourself up in the face of adversity. Supporting staffs would be very different but I would be comfortable with either one.

I can't answer that without knowing the budget and I don't really care anyway. I trust Saint John's to make the worst decision possible.

My track record is: I thought Jarvis was a great hire; I thought Norm was an okay hire but I'd have hired Bobby G instead; and I thought Lavin was a grand slam home run. Whereas he was just a grand slam breakfast. So there's that.

I just think that saying Mullin is unqualified simply because he never coached before is mental.

Exactly. The guy is a legend. Plus, in the past 3 years, the "Dream Team" and "Reqieum for the Big East" documentaries have dropped to much popularity.

Oh my God, you are making sense to me. You have just described my feelings on every issue you touched upon, except for maybe the Grand Slam breakfast.

Lavin was a double off the wall and got thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple to end the game. But I also thought he was going to be a grand slam only to be wrong.

Should I be afraid that you are making sense to me? :S

I strongly disagree. Only those who study the history of the game know him. Mullin hasn't been in the spotlight for 15 years. Jackson is much more well known than he is.

I'm not saying he'd be a bad choice, but he hasn't been relevant since these kids were babies.

This is strictly anecdotal, but it seems that those who favored Lavin are more likely to support the Mullin hiring.

Yes, I do see some exceptions. But largely.....

Why draw a line in the sand like that? I didn't like Lavin at the end, but I want mullin and it has nothing to do with my stance on Lavin.

What are you basing this on? I think you're selling these kids short... I could name hall of famers in both basketball and baseball that were dead 30 years before i was born..
