My pitch for Chris Mullin as Coach

HS Coach to Mullin: So glad you are back at St. John's. What type of sets do you plan on running?

Mullin: Ummm . . . Can I get back to you on that one?

Yeah, Mullin, who has been continuously involved with basketball for over 40 years--spending the last 30 in the NBA--would not be able answer what kind of sets he would like to run to a high school coach. You got us there.

Mullin could give a five-hour impromptu clinic on the intricate details of the different types of screens, shooting mechanics, man-to-man defense, help D, spacing the floor, team rebounding, or a number of other topics. It's pretty insulting to the man to think he couldn't knock the socks off of anyone that asked him that question. That would be like Marillac, an amateur troll, giving Marco Baldi, the master troll, tips on getting under posters skin.

Sorry should have put a ;) at the end of my post. Also apologies to Mullin if he was insulted.

also as far as local coaches and local kids go...cant think any local coach and chris mullin won't have respect for each other. Also a local stud can't argue with mullins path for success. Support ? Yes, tons of it...financial.....local ( coaches in tri state ), administrative ( sju giving him a longer lease ), and staff ( he will need a nice staff to help with bumps of first year coaching ). Cant imagine many guys not wanting to be an assistant for Mully. We all keep saying Slice, so I think we can agree thats a no brainer. Wish we had some news like.."there is mutual interest on SJU and Mullin regarding the position" something....

Mullin has been living in the Bay area for years. Seems to love the area, from everything I read. I assume kids in school there. He doesn't need the money. Probably paid more than he can make here without the heavy lifting this job will require. Unlike Mark Jackson, I don't think he ever looked for a head coaching job seriously. So if money can't lure him here, and he has no real NBA coaching aspirations, then is the Mullin talk just another way to relive the program's glory years? Or is there any chance that this talk has some serious truth behind it?

Do you think his name would arbitrarily be thrown out there? If so, do you think we would have heard from the Mullin camp that he has no interest if that were the case?

Whether Chris was accommodating to you at a cocktail party is really no indication of how he'll do as a coach.

More pertinent is how he presents himself to recruits as in:

"Oh hai Scout Top 15 Player X! My name is Chris Mullin. You may remember me from such basketball institutions as The Dream Team, Run TMC and the Springfield Hall of Fame. I used to draft college players and hand out multi-million contracts. Oh and I just beat the entire Sacramento ,,Kings in a 3-point shootout. Youtube that shit. Anyways, I'm currently coaching a team in New York City and looking for players....."

+1000

Everything is about rubbing elbows with coaches, coaches lighting up a room, R&W dinners, donations, etc.

No one cares.

The Dream Team was 23 years ago. These 16-17 year old recruits weren't even born. Ask them to name 5 Dream Teamers not named Michael or Scottie.

Mullin is a great representative of the school and would be more than welcomed.

But the constant reminiscing is nauseous.

Can you explain where the substantial university donations were directed that you allegedly pulled when the Cecilia Chang mess caused you to stop donating? If they weren't Red-White and you were so passionate about bball, then where were your donations directed towards? The bonus is that R-W donations also affect your season ticket seat locations, which you also presumably canceled.

You can have your opinions about the direction of the program, and as I have posted I understand every reservation about Mullin's lack of coaching experience and even agree with them to an extent.

What I find nauseating is your hostility. You want big donors to foot the bill for a high priced coach, but you won't donate and you have hostility towards R-W supporters. I don't get it.

One of his sons went to SJU and was on the LAX team.

For years and maybe still he is back every summer and helped with the Mullin basketball camp in NY. Not sure if he still owns the home on LI that he bought for his parents. His brothers and aunts are in NY and he's back often.

If Mullin took the job, I know he'd work his ass off to bring SJU back to elite status. I doubt he'd take the job, and be all lazy.

He'd have a job to do, and he'll accomplish what he wants.

Bottom line: I don't really care who takes over as coach, I'll be ecstatic getting to the ncaa most year, and being a top 25 team every year

Considerating his current job position and probably some draft responsibilities when could Chris take overall?

@JonRothstein: BREAKING: St. John's has offered Chris Mullin its HC job + he is expected to accept, sources told @CBSSports. Story:http://t.co/Cbm5AuRHvk

Paultzman and others in the know - thanks for all of your insight shared with more novice posters such as myself!

I would assume Chris' ties to, love of and loyalty to Coach Carnaseca = the key factor in making this a real possibility(?).
