Murray St Official Game Thread

Quick look at box score, Dom 4 min,Marco 7 Felix 7.

Fouls SJU 14 MSU 15

Free Throws SJU 20 MSU 12

3pt SJU 2-14 MSU 10-30

After yesterday's game of poor outside shooting Branch on ESPNU claimed the way to beat SJU was to allow them to take three pointers. 2 for 14 tonight just about proves him right.

Wasn't able to watch tonight's game but it appeared from the earlier posts that Balamou had a good first half. Did he get back in the game? Sounded like alot of young mental mistakes tonight; going to happen. Still looking forward to Baylor - win or lose. Better guard Jackson or he'll eat us up with three pointers.

It's not that simple. D'Lo is shooting 23% from three after hitting at a 40% clip down the stretch last year. He will shoot better and we know that Bourgalt should be good from the outside. We won't light teams up, but we will hit enough threes to keep the defense honest.

If I had to watch that game again my laptop would probably be in 10,000 little pieces. I know I'm being negative and in a grumpy mood here, but if this team really is made of anything, go out there after Baylor and win all the cupcake games and enter Big East play 11-2. I really can't take many more disappointing seasons from my favorite teams. If we beat Baylor by some miracle, that more than makes up for the Murray State game. But if we lose as we should, we better go on a big streak or we are toast for March.

Enough with the hyperbole. There have been a grand total of 120 minutes played this season. 3 games in and you're talking about how we "should lose to Baylor" and subsequently need to go on a run or we are done. If the kids in that locker room are as negative as you then we will undoubtedly stink this year. I seriously doubt they are as down on themselves as you are on them though

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Cut it out. We put it together against baylor, get out of SC with 2 wins and everyone forgets about this loss.

Heslip shoots better than Jackson. Heslip had 9 treys in a game last year. It wasn't Murray Stat's outside shooting that killed us. It was that Murray State stole our ability to control the tempo in the second half. Our offense fell flat as did our defense about 3/4 the way through. We are not playing a full 40 minutes right now in games, but then again, neither did Murray State. In the end, Murray State exploited our lazy defensive rotation as well as our lack of focus on offense and squeaked out the win.

In the end though, while losing is never good, we have an excellent season to look forward to. We toyed with this Murray State team for most of the first half except when the refs did let them back in before the half. We need to put second half efforts together and I'll. This Murray State team is a very good one that went several rounds deep into the NCAA's last year and has almost everybody back on the court. This narrow loss is not a bad loss in any way. Best way to remedy is to move on and beat a good Baylor team to give us a 3-1 week.

No, I think his seven minutes all came in the first half. To be fair, we were holding a decent lead for most of the second half, so Coach was probably staying with what worked.

In the last ten minutes, we were slipping on the floor (lots of condensation on the floor; did they play hockey there earlier today?), making ill advised passes, and not being very patient on offense. That's where the pg would really help. Plus, a pg would open D'Lo up for shots if the defense needs to keyon a ball handler. Branch will be here soon, so we don't need to worry about this for much longer. Closing out games is a learning process and we still have work to do there.

Too many perimeter shots for Obekpa and Jakarr (I don't care if they can hit them) with such a small MS lineup out there.

I hope when they get back to NY, they can figure something else out on offense besides running a weave until the shot clock gets down to 10 seconds and then going one-on-one playing hero ball.

That's not going to work every possession for an entire game and for an entire tournament.

That's Lavin's offensive plan, open up the floor and work for an open opportunity. Obviously, he would prefer fastbreaking for an easier shot.

Its a good team but I think the announcer said that they lost 3 of their starters from last years NCAA tourney squad.

Sky ain't falling. We all know that. We are just rooting like crazy for the good guys to close out winnable games against quality opponents. We will all be singing this same song a few more times this season. It goes with growing pains.

I agree. This game drove me nuts. I mean we really HAD this game. But if we can win tomorrow it would be a huge plus for us overall, 3-1 into our soft patch. Felix provided a lift and I think Branch will really help. (Which some other poster mentioned)

Crazy part is that we're still playing without two potential starting caliber players in Branch and Sanchez. We will be deadly by mid-season.

We led for 80% of the game and even DOMINATED a lot of the time. Then it was refs to the rescue and the magic 3 ball. I don't think I'll live past 40 if I watch many more of these types of games.

yep it was. lol

Are you honestly going to blame me for something else I didn't do? Let's not even start...pretty sure there is more than 1 angry SJ fan. Do you ever watch those conversation sections? Every single game in every single sport there's 500 people like that trolling.

Joe what are the odds that oldfan would come here complaining about some poster on that other site complaining incessantly and saying we were winning 80% of the game and then all the sudden you post something here about winning 80% of the game.

I mean seriously lets be realistic. What are the odds both that poster and you would use the same exact number 80% ?

Not trying to add any fuel to any fire, but the opposing fans were occasionally complimentary about StJ and our players. They were amusingly ticked off by the refs who they thought were screwing THEM regularly, and they were uniformly riled about RedStorm Johnnys ridiculous taunting. I'd say they were pretty good and smart fans like most in the Big Conferences. Our representative on that board made us look like rookies and poor sports. We should have classes in sportsmanship, the lost art.

Logen: "I really don't think the game was called completely unfairly."

Now that is possible. I definitely was very myopically focused on the game - with my pro SJU lenses on... However, I'm not sure I can stomach re-watching to really see how fairly the game was called; I might get cranky re-watching our less than stellar execution in the 2nd half.

It would have been nice to have Sanchez to keep up on the interior play. I felt the game slipped even further along into the abyss when Obekpa picked up his late foul and our interior defense really seemed slip away, which just opened up things even more on the outside.

Although we should have won the game despite the refs, just think back to the two charge calls early in the game (on Sampson and Greene), and think about the big guy for Murray State barreling over our guys under the basket three times in the second half. None of those calls went our way. All should have gone our way. The refs were bad.

There were 4 fouls that the announcers and the rest of the country saw against MS that these these blind SOBs missed. In a close game, it cost us the game. We do not have a passing PG yet and it made our offense helter-skelter. I miss coach D!

STJ lost this game, the refs didn't. I really don't think the officiating was all that bad besides a few calls--none of which were fatal to STJ's chances.

Very, very tough to lose the game in this fashion. The open three's and then that disgusting, lazy pass that was intercepted by Murraty State and converted to give them a five point lead....

I was hoping to steal these two games and beat up on some scrubs for a few weeks while the team gets to where they need to be. Very frustrating, but the team we saw tonight will not be the team we see in March.

Let's hope!

Obviously, a very dissapointing end to the game tonight. But, oddly, after a tough loss, I find myself feeling very good about this team. Call me crazy, but this loss reminds me a lot of the Pre-season NIT losses in November of 1998 at the Garden to Stanford and Purdue. You got a glimpse of what this team is capable of, and they were in command of the game against a good opponent. Then, a couple of things didn't go our way and the young talented team responded with a couple of sloppy turnovers and rushed shots to let the game slip away. This team is very talented and very deep. Yes, there are imperfections...especially on the offensive side right now. But, I have a feeling that what we see in January and February will be very different than what we see now and it will have us smiling. The pieces are there. We just need to give it some time.

Agreed, and while this may be stating the obvious, we're also witnessing one of the greatest Redmen players of all time. D'Angelo Harrison is averaging over 20 points per game against some pretty good early season competition and he's not even shooting well. His drives, hesitation moves and willingness to take every shot if others want to stand around is comendable. His ability to do so and actually convert many of those shots is what makes him special. While we will all look back when he's done here and think highly of his work as a Johnny (and that time may come soon, although I'm still hoping he gives us a third and fourth year), appreciating all he can do as we're watching him is even more fun. We're in for a very good ride this year, and I'm glad we can say that after a very difficult 2011-2012 for Coach and his family (especially), the team and us fans. We are St.John's !!!
