Mullin Update

Impossible not to be excited about what's ahead for St. John's hoops. Chris is a natural leader for this program. No doubt he'll have some things to learn and we'll have some bumps on the way, but the guy is wired the right way for NY and St. John's.

At Citi Field;

@StJohnsBBall: STRIKEEEE!!

@MikeVacc: Chris Mullin, from the top of the mound, delivers a southpaw cutter that splits the plate
in half. Because of course! #Mets #sjubb

You've got to love how comfortable Mullin is on the mound when throwing out these first pitches (earlier this season at Yankee Stadium). His friendly banter with the players reminds us that we have a coach with star power, an NBA HOFer that accomplished more as a professional athlete than nearly all of the MLB players on the field. It appears that the players know who he is, and he seems to know them as well. Keith Hernandez commented on Mullin's heyday at SJU overlapping his own arrival in NY, and demonstrated a little awareness of Big East basketball in that era.

On Chris Mullin to St. John's: "I might have put this hire low at first but now I may put it on top. Two reasons. First, they are putting player development above everything else and that is what elite recruits want to hear. The comments New York coaches have made about their presentations and plans for getting guys ready for the next level sound a lot like Kentucky. This message works in recruiting. Plus, Chris has the NBA credibility. Second, they are working as hard as anyone at being in the right places and showing their top guys a lot of love. If they can get some momentum in wins and/or elite commitments it can go from there. The first steps may be hardest."

Three points
1. Thank you for your post!
2. I have a similar feeling I ( and many) had before the Derby in anticipation of Secretariat running; could witness a big time act at SJU;
3. Please use your influence - or that of others herein - to insure every former player attending any game is recognized during the game and announce which section and have the player stand!!!

That would be class and taking care of our own.
That's the least we can do.
Thanks
all the best

You've repeated this request for quite some time, and it makes an awful lot of sense to pepper timeouts with announcements recognizing players in attendance. Not only does it honor the former player, but reminds fans of our rich tradition. Finally, any recruits in the arena will know that when they come here, they will not be forgotten. The only thing I would do to temper this is that some former players, George Johnson notable, are at just about every Garden game, so I'm not sure it makes sense to announce regulars every single game.

Beast
I think it's worth repeating, that's all...we are now moving into the "class act" "top program" status
and announcing former players is readily doable; it promotes the sense of family and "we take care of our own";
Sometimes you need to nudge (whomever) so it remains on the front burner...
And gets done

I agree with regular former player attendees
:)

Received a tweet saying SJU welcomed the largest freshman class of any Catholic U in the country. Looked like Carnesecca Arena was pretty well filled up. Hope coach got a chance to give a short welcoming address with an invite to attend SJU basketball games. Lord knows we can use more student support.

Saw the same tweet.

By way of perspective, in 1970, the freshman class numbered 1,950 students (Source: Jim Pellow's book, Transformational Leadership, page 90).

Today's freshman class has about 1,000 more students.

A lot has changed in 45 years.

Love that back court. Think he will insert another guards long as our rebounding is good

Encouraged by the comments about Lovett. Sounds like Mullin is expecting him to qualify. Hoping so, an important piece of the puzzle.
