Mullin Update

Per Zach B

Was told St. John's coaches will be in Spain next week for FIBA U-17 tournament. #sjubb

Great news as I firmly believe the recruiting of high level Europeans mixed with top NYC kids and jc's and transfers is the way to go. The majority of top talent in NYC will always want to go away for greener pastures so the staff's approach makes fantastic sense to me , as outside of the States looking in NYC is the place to be.
On another note hopefully the staff can spend time in Spain with a certain Rowan Barrett who should be there watching his son who just turned 16 and get that recruitment into high gear. :)
It's been far too long since we had a Canuck on the roster. Time to open the gates. :)

.

Thanks RMN, P
Human nature= take the good things and people for granted;
Great we are not doing that with Chris, Matt et al.
We have a good staff ( yes not perfect) and a good thing going!
:)

None, but Jay Wright and Chris Mullin are in diffrerent coaching stratospheres.

Let's wait and see Tred...no reason we cannot be on the Villanova, Gonzaga, Xavier level...just need to "give it a little more time and our love will surely grow" - ( Chairman of the Board" lyrics - Detroit soul group 1970s)

:cheer:

Bill Wennington = Canadian I recall (correctly?)
Welcome (perhaps) young Mr. Barrett

And young Mr. Barrett's dad, Rowan ('92-'96).

Often I have to stop and ask myself does our staff ever stop recruiting ?
Day after day we continue to receive positive news about where our staff was , is going and who they have offered.
Yesterday alone we saw that they had the head of a top Midwest AAU program on campus, a program many of us had previously never heard of. We found out they offered a 5 * recruit from Georgia for 2018.
We found out they are going to Spain for the under 17 FIBA Championships.
For someone who believes recruiting is 80% of the battle I am in heaven when I read all of this info.
This staff is front and Center everywhere they should and can be.
And once again, and sorry for being redundant , but thank you Paultzman for making the time and effort to share all of this info with the board.

Excellent RMN P...and the corollary - these significant folks are interested in us or they wouldn't make the trip.
I laugh when I recall all the cynical posts about HS kids and coaches do not know who Chris Mullin is.
Well Chris has worked and achieved on every basketball level AND he came back to his roots for one purpose: to succeed here as well. Already doing it and more speedily than any of us could have imagined.
Enjoying the ride.
Good morning.
:)

Mitch Richmond is still heavy favorite to be the third St. John's assistant. But the process is ongoing. #sjubb

Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond love basketball, are bonded together as brothers, have the young & enthusiastic Matt, St.Jean - this will out of necessity - like a sports law of gravity - rub off and allure HS AAU JC and foreign players...AND so
I think our recruiting will reach a high plateau...why we are already involved with top tier kids
I'm slowing down enough to allow myself to enjoy this unfolding process
Great time to be a fan,
Great!
Wow!

Here's Zag's take on Mitch:

As far as the Mullin era goes, this is the only move I question. It's hard to rationalize this inexperienced staff now tapping "a work in progress" as Zags' source described him.

The Mitch hire only seems to serve a desire to have a trusted confidant on the bench. I am sure that's important, but we could really use another experienced coach weighing in on practice and game decisions.

All in all.....still completely behind #20.

I imagine that Richmond will be well compensated as an entry level coach. I really don' t see what demonstrated high value he brings to the program apart from being a former nba star. If Mullin's coaching strategy is to delegate responsibilities traditionally associated with head coach to assistants, I don' t see how this is a strong move.

Ah, the totally omniscient and infallible "source" strikes fear into the hearts of mortal SJU fans everywhere.

He has been playing basketball most of his life.He has been and worked with various coaches at all levels of the game. Knowledge has been infused in him. What makes coaches great is that they get great players, experience is over-rated.The question is will he be a great recruiter

#20 is the best we could have as Head Coach now in 2016-17 Johnny and CM might evolve - in time - to the best ever at SJU. Not s guarantee but certainly a possibility.

Look what we've done so far as to foundation, recruiting, goodwill atmosphere.
