Mullin Update

The fact that Yukon Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun let George Blaney "X & O", or that Bob Huggins has let long time assistants Billy Hahn and Larry Harrison "X & O", does not seem to bother their respective fan bases.

Everyone knows Calhoun and Huggy can coach, though, so that's the big difference so far. I think Mullin has the acumen to be a good coach, but jury is still out until this coming season. But as others have said, talent should make the staff look better, and we do have a nice team on paper.

Tom Hanks let Geena Davis manage the team and make out the lineups but eventually took control of the team. See there are a lot of instances where the head coach or manager delegates all of the little annoyances of actually managing or coaching to someone else.

From having watched Coach Mullin many a year ago I would think his greatest assets at present would be recruiting ( All American, Wooden award winner, Dream Team 2 x, NBA Hall of Fame ) and that will only hold true providing we improve our win total substantially going forward, and coaching in the off season and in practice, especially working one on one with players.
Outside of that, and if he can accomplish what I have said, which I have little doubt he will do, it does not bother me if St. Jean does the majority of ingame coaching.

In the end, Mullin will be judged like all coaches are, W's and L's and condition of the program over time. Some will obviously disagree but for me the Mullin era begins next season and will be judged over the next 4-5 years. How we get "there" is irrelevant to me as long as we get "there" and it's within the rules.

Agreed. And if we start winning, no one will care who diagrams plays in the huddle. Right now this is all about whether Chris can coach, and of course a few naysayers in the media who aren't enthralled with the new regime for whatever reason.

Coaching has many facets. The head coach does not have to be the best on all facets. That is why he has a staff.

I think this is all about optics. Everybody has an opinion about what a coach should look like and what he does on the sidelines. I think the important thing that I look for in a coach, is What kind of administrator is he, can he recruit, uplift, and gives the players the support they need within the program. I think he has to be a good spokesman for the school and program. He has to have strong leadeship skills, and can he inspire the kids. Who carries the clip board or speaks to the kids, is really unimportant to me. He may do most of his coaching in practice. I think whether he carries his water in his right or left hand is irrelevant. I think if he does the things that I listed he will be a hell of a coach.
I think the way the staff has performed building the program so far indicates he is executing few of those areas already. I like what I see, and I think it is a fun time to be a Johnnie fan. I know we are all paranoid because of our history, but I do believe our program is in great hands.

I do not believe you post often, you are however gracious and very often thank other posters, but you certainly expressed some poignant thoughts in your post here - so you deserved more than me clicking on the thank you button!
Keep up the caring, supportive approach - like Tony the Tiger...it's great! Grrrr8
:)

I've always listened intently when Chris speaks because what you always get is honesty.

I disagree with his position on delegating, because to me on the court he doesn't just delegate responsibilities, ge appears to cede authority. Players do not appear to look to bim for leadership, which is essential to his long term success.

His team has recruited well, but i also believe they must reel in that monster recruit or two to catapult the program to top 15 status. But going forward it aooears we will be deeper, better balanced, more stable, and hopefully more competitive than we've been in quite some time. In short, a complete restoration if he coaches them up a little.

Agree with you, Beast. Maybe he acts completely different in practice, but seeing Chris back away while Greg led the huddle always pissed me off. Happened way too often, IMO. You are the coach and you are the one the players should be looking to.

I don't believe if Mullin said the same things as St. Jean, there would have been different results last season.
