Mullin Update

Agree...in a good position but qestion for you that you might know

: you noted Lovett as a freshman for next year... As a partial qualifier this year doesn't this still count as 1 yr and then only three left ?

Barring anyone leaving hard to call 2017 yet as we don't know if Rawle/Thon/unknown grad transfer comes or it gets held. Also, not so much a matter who to give ship to vs. Who wants to accept the offer(s)

Crazy to say but not enough ships for 2017.
For next season we have :
3 freshmen- Ponds, Lovett and Richard
5 sophomores - Mussini, Malik, Yakwe, Sima and Owens
3 juniors- Ahmed, Williams and Amar
1senior - CJ
And they say staff is still recruiting for 2016.
Very hard to know who to give the ship to for 2017. After Jarvasss, Norm and Lavin I never thought we would have such a problem. I like the position we are in.

Great Point. That is why the staff is struggling with how deep they get in with certain recruits.

Isn't Williams a senior next year? That would leave us 2 ships for 2017 as things stand now.

After our young squad has another year to grow and win more games next year, give me Jordan Tucker as our lone freshmen 2 years from now and I foresee a 22+ win season

My understanding is Lovett will have four seasons to play. But whether he is a freshman or sophomore that doesn't change the scholarship situation for 2017.
If they give out another ship this year we will have 1 for 2017. If we save it and no one leaves we have 2.
Where I disagree with you strongly is where you say who wants to accept. I have no doubt two top 100 kids will be delighted to accept. I see the problem of there being a lack of ships and not a lack of candidates prepared to accept.
For me it's a no brainer Waters and Tucker. You can never have too many PGs and personally I would be surprised if both Mussini and Lovett stayed all four years so Waters would be a great addition when they are juniors. Tucker too would be great as he can play the 2 and 3.
Time will tell but I would love to wrap those two up and move onto 2018.
Boy have I gotten greedy. :)

Monte Williams was a sophomore this season. Two years left barring a medical hardship ruling. That is if the staff requests same.

RN FYI he's listed as a Jr on our official web site.

Monty Williams is the associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder who recently and tragically lost his wife in a car accident where the other driver crossed over the median and caused a head on collision. Showing great class and grace Mr. Williams said that there should also be prayers for the other woman (the one that caused the accident). Believe he played at Notre Dame and also for the Knicks among other NBA teams.

I believe you but he had only played 1 year of college ball and had 3 years of eligibility left. I am not advocating anything and I find it abhorrent when this board discusses players leaving early because I believe any player who works hard and is in proper standing should remain on the team but I do see AA and Williams having a tough time getting pt going forward.

I have my concerns about landing either. Tucker seems to be unsure about the strength of the St. John's program. Waters has offers from Stanford and Yale which concerns me.

I agree with you completely, provided a kid is willing to accept the roll that is handed to them. I see Amar being the kind of kid who will accept whatever roll he is given. I have no sense about Williams one way or the other. I guess if Williams spent 2 years at JC, even if he only played one year, he comes in as Junior?

Williams is an academic junior, but athletic sophomore

Maybe Paultz can chime in, but I thought he might have said just one more year for Williams. Maybe an issue with his off year in juco? I could be imagining this whole thing, though.

Players are given 5 years to play 4 years. Since Williams only played 1 year in JUCO, he came to St Johns with 3 years of eligibility left. He now has 2 years of eligibility left and then can appeal to the NCAA for an injury waiver to get a 3rd. The situation will work itself out because he should graduate next year. This will allow him to decide if he wants to continue at St Johns or ask for a graduate transfer. The decision should be his alone.

Williams has two seasons left, as North noted. Getting this year back via redshirt is not probable based on his history in simplest terms.

Edit - did not see Panther's post befor putting mine up. He explains it precisely as usual.

Is St. John's on the hook for a scholarship if he decides to continue with graduate studies? Or is the obligation complete on graduation?

Scholarships are offered on an annual basis, though most schools want to honor 4 year commitments as much as possible.

Maybe that is what I was thinking if you've mentioned it before. I remember something being an issue.

Was just watching Ohio State's huddle with 20 seconds left in a tight game and none other than 29 year-old assistant coach Greg Paulus was holding the white board drawing up a play while veteran Final-4 coach Thad Matta was sitting empty handed. Matta must not have a clue what he's doing out there.
