Mullin Update

seems to me st jean is the Xs Os guy. Mully gets a pass this, next year he will not. Hope this is a learning experience.

something tells me that when that time mullin retires from here that st jean is gonna be the next head coach i dunno about you guys but i have a gut feeling about that ....and st jean/ Matt A are gonna be here for a very long time unless something happens

If he wants to be a HC and willing to start out at the D2 or D3 level, there will be plenty of opportunities. Remember it wasn't long ago that Cluess, a nationally recognized HS coach, went to Suffolk CC, the CW Post to earn some credibility before going to Iona. My guess he won't wait here that long to have the mantle passed to him. As it is, right now he just doesn't run timeouts, he is the most animated shouting to players on the court during play. I don't believe it's in his makeup to take a backseat on the bench once Mullin is ready to assume those reins.

... Our staff make up gets an A+ in recruiting ability , but our XO expert is 23 years old. ...

Don't see a problem with Greg St. Jean's being 23. X's & O's aren't exactly rocket science. Aside from a grasp of the fundamentals, there's really only so much room for coming up with innovative strategies. The rest is mostly grunt work -- dedication and time spent reviewing film and studying your opponents, and maybe picking other coaches' brains -- and being able to get your ideas across to players.
How do you think Dunlaps presence helped Lavin? I don't think his results would have been as good IMO his first 2 years. There are coaches who overachieve w inferior players, St Jean may be a wizard. ,I don't know, but he still doesn't have much exp, like Mullin..

I'm not questioning the importance of having a good X&0 guy on your staff, especially when the head coach has zero experience in his role. I'm simply suggesting that having the talent, the mentality, the discipline, and the passion for the job is more important for an X&O guy than having, say, an additional five or ten years experience on the job. The game is basically simple, and once it's broken down, there really isn't much room for innovative thinking; it's about knowing your opponent's strengths and weakness and how to adjust to them. What's crucial for any X&O'er is having a head coach who values your input (which Mullin apparently does) ... and,of course, having players who "get it" and who are talented enough to executive the strategies you've given them.

Exactly and in fact in most areas of life most new ideas are bad ideas. Our last coach tried to be innovative. He had the epiphany that the game should be played outside in with 4 2-guards and a power forward. And where did it get him: back on TV with all the other failed coaches. Traditions are the result of trial and error. History filters the bad ideas out through experience and evolution insures that over the long haul stupid ideas kill off the stupid people who thought of them. Mullin seems smart enough to know that he's not smarter than anyone else. Unlike our former coach he is not stupid enough to mistake his own idiocy for cleverness. If nothing else that's a step forward.

I've been surprised that this team doesn't play harder.

Spot on. They accept defeat too easily, as if they know they are supposed to get blown out and just accept it. That folks, comes from the staff, the entire staff. This better not continue to be the case.

Haven't seen that at all this year. They play hard

oh please lets get one thing staright this team has battled with injuries, and people missing time cause of the ncaa *YAKWE AND LOVETT* plus most of the players and coaches are freshman in college basketball ...they have no experince ...they are playing hurt and blind out there some of you need to cut this team some slack and if you think you can do better go play for them

I agree (other than against Incarnate Word). I think they are just overwhelmed and don't know what to do when the wheels start falling off. There is really no talented and experience (combined) enough player on the team to take control of the game and steer them back on course.

I agree and I really like the point about some of our coaches being freshmen too. Put yourself in Mullins shoes, he's a coach for the first time ever, and he's in charge or looking over a roster with very inferior talent for the first time ever. When he was with the Kings they were bad but at least they had guys like boogie Cousins.

We don't. We are so young and over matched, I honestly don't know what some expect. Next year is going to be interesting. Let's see what we look like with some top talent in there. In my opinion 4 of our 5 starters next year aren't even playing ror us right now, so let's get some of the talent here and see what happens.

the biggest problem we faced this year is we dont have a legit PG and sima got hurt and dont have a big man thats why we are getting killed by aleast 20 points each game

Happy to see him gone but thats the approach that got us to the ncaa's. And then back on TV with all the other guys.

He didn't make the NCAA tournament because of his approach, he made it despite his approach. If his approach were as clever as he thought it was he'd have won something with something other than a roster full of seniors.

Issue is pretty simple. You really can't judge a coach when the team has basically no talent. Our best offensive player is Durand Johnson. On defense we are small and slow and also thin. If you cloned John Wooden, coach ferret face, Bobby Knight and whoever else this team would stink.

If next years team does not get into 15-16 win range and more importantly look better doing it then you can start to worry / complain.

well another big problem he had was the fact he doesnt like to recruit in nyc/nj and he didnt bother to talk to the coaches either

I am going to say all of the following knowing I am going to get blasted, but let me preface it by saying I still love Mullin, want him to be great and think he can be.

I would just like to see some more in game coaching. What do I mean by that? It's simple, I want Mullin to be the 1 voice the players hear in time outs. Be up and engaged during the game talking to the players on and off the court. When the other team is on the foul line call your guards that are not lining the key over and impart some of that knowledge you have with a "hey, they are doing this to you, so do this and we should get a lay up or an open 3". Right now, none of this happens regularly and it concerns me.

Think I am overreacting? Answer this, when was the last time you saw an assistant run a time out huddle for Bill Self, Bobby Knight, Roy Williams, Coach K, Jay Wright, Shaka Smart, etc? It doesn't happen! He needs to be The Coach! The Voice! Hopefully that happens sooner than later, but by the beginning of next season at the latest, otherwise he is just a figurehead, a tool used for recruiting, not the coach.

Just my opinion...blast away.
I'm going to blast away and give you a +1 because I agree with you

Again, sorry if I sound like a broken record, but Mullin can scribble on a chalkboard like Russell Crowe in a Beautiful Mind and the team will still not be successful.

Criticism or praise for Mullin and staff at this point is an absolute waste of time - college basketball coaching is recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. Funny how "legendary" coaches K and Calapari come back to the pack when they don't have laydown talent.

I completely get that, and agree with you. This is not about wins and losses for me, it is about coaching acumen and who is the voice for the team. To share your reference, you're right, it will make no difference in the result, but i still want Mullin to be the one scribbling on the chalkboard.

agree. 1 of the complaints from some about Lavin was that he acted more like a general manager on the sidelines. It's not much different now
