Mullin Update

Was talking to Dick Stockton. In his opinion he doesn't think Mullin is a good coach. Hope he is wrong. I think it is too early to judge one way or another.

Well under the umbrella of " coach "
is recruiting and clearly Chris Mullin has excelled at that;
also under the umbrella of " coach " is assembling a quality staff...excelled yet again...
it seems another aspect of what constitutes a " coach " is moving the program in a positive direction which will absolutely happen in 2016-17...
Throw in the goodwill and connections to a myriad of HS/JC/other coaches...
I like Dick Stockton but does he have a grasp on what's really happening, where the program was and where it's headed???
I don't think so

all the best
didnt get to talk to him long, but said mullin was a good recrutor what was intersting is he told his relatively new wife how great sju bb used to be in its heyday.

Thanks RS
How great SJU used to be
AND
How great we will be, time, time will do it... This has been an important year of growth, getting yes getting beat, starting toward being great once again.
As so many have reflected, lousy unenjoyable season, big time connections to big time recruits = very bright future. Not perfect but very bright.
Time.

all the best
:)

He doesn't want Mullin to be a good coach. Syracuse fan.

There is a reality that most fans see that right now Mullin isn't a good coach. Some guys are naturals at coaching and take to it like ducks to water. Mullin hasn't really done that but it doesn't mean he can't get comfortable and learn. Getting a Big East D1 head coaching job as your first crack at head coaching is a gigantic step and most of us realize that. We are all willing to be patient and hope Mullin grows with the talent level that is being brought in.

As far as other Big East coaches saying nice things about Mullin, in my opinion you know you're doing a great job when they stop saying gratuitous things about you as soon as you start beating them on the court.

It certainly doesn't do any good for Stockton to be shooting off his mouth, and certainly doesn't take a higher basketball intellect to know Mullin is an apprentice right now. We don't have to be Kool-Aid drinkers in order to know where things stand know but be optimistic that Mullin is restoring the program and will become a competent coach here.

Yes he is!!! Look at the yrs and yrs Mullin has been involved with basketball at all levels including the highest and the great minds that the played with and learned from that says volumes. He will be a great coach. Ever coach has a different approach. Many now being successful do not have his background Lets give this a rest about his coaching It has onlt been 1/2 a season of which he has not not much to work with for that matter Dukes coach or Novas coach would have probably has the same results

Stockton wasn't shooting his mouth off. I told him I was a fan and he is knowledgeable and was very nice, Like SSG said , What makes a good coach? I don't think Calipari is a great coach ,he just gets the best players. Some people may look at this season and say Mullin cant coach, because we stink. Our returning players barely sniffed the court w Lavin on a depleted team. Certainly too soon to say Mullin will be a success also. Our staff make up gets an A+ in recruiting ability , but our XO expert is 23 years old. Mullin has NBA connections, great shooting instructor, and seems good w the players. This is a multiyear project ,that seems to be in the right direction. Truth be told, another SSG expression, only the shadow knows.

Criticism or praise for Mullin and staff at this point is an absolute waste of time - college basketball coaching is recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. Funny how "legendary" coaches K and Calapari come back to the pack when they don't have laydown talent.

Disagree, as usual. A respectful discussion of how Mullin is doing as a first year coach is pertinent to discussions on Redmen.com. While I ascribe to Frank McGuire's theorem that players are way more important than coaching, you do need a baseline set of skills. Mullin is a big boy making a big salary, and to assess how he has done so far is fair game.

Everything that happens on this site is an absolute waste of time. That's what it's here for. That said there are few coaches who don't live and die by their talent. Other than Pete Carril it's a very short list.

The best student doesn't always make the best teacher. Its not about knowing the game its about being able to teach the game and to get your players to see it as you see it. Mullin will take time. This summer is huge for him and the program. He now knows what to expect and will be known as the coach by the whole team. If we see a lot of what we see now during next season then I will be concerned.

... Our staff make up gets an A+ in recruiting ability , but our XO expert is 23 years old. ...

Don't see a problem with Greg St. Jean's being 23. X's & O's aren't exactly rocket science. Aside from a grasp of the fundamentals, there's really only so much room for coming up with innovative strategies. The rest is mostly grunt work -- dedication and time spent reviewing film and studying your opponents, and maybe picking other coaches' brains -- and being able to get your ideas across to players.

How do you think Dunlaps presence helped Lavin? I don't think his results would have been as good IMO his first 2 years. There are coaches who overachieve w inferior players, St Jean may be a wizard. ,I don't know, but he still doesn't have much exp, like Mullin..

Next year with Lovett the X and O's are going to look a lot better. Louie's most exciting team was Mark Jackson's Junior year and Jarvis looked like a genius with Barkley and gang. Not too mention that Brian Mahoney won BE coach of the year his first season with David Cain

Zuckerberg stole the idea from those two dopey twins, but they were about his same age so point taken anyway

Not saying your wrong. All Im saying is he is an unproven entity. That said, What I read about him, sounds like he may be a head coach one day. I also agree, great players make a coach look a lot smarter.

I am going to say all of the following knowing I am going to get blasted, but let me preface it by saying I still love Mullin, want him to be great and think he can be.

I would just like to see some more in game coaching. What do I mean by that? It's simple, I want Mullin to be the 1 voice the players hear in time outs. Be up and engaged during the game talking to the players on and off the court. When the other team is on the foul line call your guards that are not lining the key over and impart some of that knowledge you have with a "hey, they are doing this to you, so do this and we should get a lay up or an open 3". Right now, none of this happens regularly and it concerns me.

Think I am overreacting? Answer this, when was the last time you saw an assistant run a time out huddle for Bill Self, Bobby Knight, Roy Williams, Coach K, Jay Wright, Shaka Smart, etc? It doesn't happen! He needs to be The Coach! The Voice! Hopefully that happens sooner than later, but by the beginning of next season at the latest, otherwise he is just a figurehead, a tool used for recruiting, not the coach.

Just my opinion...blast away.

i mean your right he is the head coach but the problem is hes a rookie as a head coach ...slice is usually doing the talking but what confuses me why st.jean is there talking maybe they want everybody to balanced i dunno but usually the HC is doing the coaching and talking

seems to me st jean is the Xs Os guy. Mully gets a pass this, next year he will not. Hope this is a learning experience.
