You guys pick and choose what you want to read it’s cool. I’m standing by my opinion that we’re a possible one win and done team. I’m not sugar coating anything or making unrealistic expectations. We’ll be a .500 BE team, we’ll makd the tournament, we’ll hopefully win a game there.

Again...we have no inside presence. You can’t change what your roster is mid-season. You guys can keep going back and forth about these crappy games, they don’t matter, they won’t matter starting dec 29. Lets just get to the Seton Hall game and everyone’s gripes will get taken a little more seriously by me.
Guinness, I respect your opinion, but if we are only a .500 team in the Big East , with our extremely weak OOC schedule, we are not making the NCAA Tournament. We need at least 12 wins in conference to make up for the weak schedule in order to make the NCAA Tournament. Either that or beat Duke. I will take 8-0 any day but if this team doesn’t commit to playing defense it be a disappointing season in the end.

Totally agree! Unless things change we are going to find it very difficult to win half of our conference games. Frankly, I thing the NCAA Tournament is a long shot.

What I choose to look at is we are 8-0 and we have not played well yet. I don't care who we have played. The team has issues for sure. Issues that there is nothing that can be done about. But right now biggest issue is something that actually can be corrected. Getting out on shooters is an effort thing. So yes that can be fixed. If it doesn't then we will be a disappointment. As far as well wait till we play good teams stuff. Who knows. We played like shit against almost everyone last year and beat Nova and Duke. Maybe light switch as far as effort gets turned on once BE season starts. That is my hope anyway.

You guys have to be the most miserable group of fans ever. We’re 8-0 and you guys are complaining about style wins and points like this is college football.

The way to describe any positive comments by fans in a game where we won to go 8-0 is putting lipstick on a pig.
It was ugly and it stunk.   We basically played a freshman team (9 frosh)  with a couple of sophs and struggled.
Not revisiting our "recruiting has improved" thread but only one of our freshmen played and didn't have the impact of any of the Mount freshmen who were unranked.  Their center, Jefferson, was a 6'9 230lb freshman. Their forward was a freshman.  They played most of the game.  Our freshmen are 3 and 4 star but look like they are an afterthought by the coaching staff.
As for the game we allowed 3s to be taken by doubling a freshman under the basket.  The opposing coach is either a genius or we suck developing Josh Roberts to oppose a freshman ranked below him.
The players got their points for the most part but Heron was a train wreck trying to get his points.  We could have fed Figueroa in a high low where we had a distinct talent and experience adavatge but played the same useless pro offense looking for the 3 point shot with no one near the basket.  It is a bad habit being taught by a staff that has no concept about teaching.
Suffice it to say that this is the most uninspiring 8-0 team in the country and most half decent coaches will have us figured out by February.

The Big East by all the metrics I've seen is ranked #3 this year, and all 10 teams are within the top 100 NET (think we're only conference to say that). The Big East doesn't have a headliner, but certainly it is looking better now than it did at the start of the season.

Our OOC does suck, but if we go 12-1 OOC we don't need 12 wins during conference play. Maybe 10 and a BET win (23 total). To be honest, I could see 21/22 getting us in, but it depends how the BE plays the next couple weeks.

I’m not sure why people are content with just the wins. We have to assume at some point we might get better to beat good teams? Isn’t this what this cupcake early season is all about? Getting better and learning how to play. We regressed with our defense today as well admit our rebounding and our offensive movement. Not good signs. These games, while they count, are still prep for tougher league games as well as Duke. We simply can’t afford to continue to look this bad, barely winning over horrible teams, and expect to perform well when we hit real competition. Somebody on the staff has to compel them in some way or another, to play with proper tempo the whole game, no matter competition.

I will say this again though. One positive of us playing poorly and still winning is we have gained experience playing in close games. If we would have won all these games by 20 would have not gained anything.

Scratching my bald head on why Tariq Owens wanted out. He would be getting about 33 minutes a game and probably be averaging 10 pts 12 reb and 3 blk per game. Doesn't make sense, he's the rim protector we need, with or without Keita.
What do you say to a huge jacked 6'4 guy who is 8-0 fighting midgets but got taken to the last round in almost all of the matches? Would you be confident to put money on him once he starts fighting heavyweights his size?

8-0 is nice but the team is a mess right now. Mullin is there talking to the team as if they're up 30. I'm not acting like I have all the answers because I don't but that's not my job and to act like coaching is not a major major issue is nuts at this point. Yes of course he tells them to close out and blah blah blah, but whatever IT is, it's not working. This is a team of absolute stud players who are upperclassmen and Mullin is well into year 4. Enough is enough. I don't think we are Kansas. Marist would kill these guys.
You ever think to yourself, That these guys aren't studs maybe except for one or two. We have good players. I wouldn't call them studs.

I feel our fan base Hypes up every player without ever seeing them play at this level. We hype up recruits and beg them to come here. But when they don't Pan out, we ish all over them.

Mean Gene....if we go 10-10, that would get us to, I’m not looking it up, 22-10 or something like that. This is the last time I’m writing this...we have no big man. Everyone pining for Keita has to ask themselves the question...how good is he really? We don’t even know. How healthy will he be. I’m looking at this realistically, we’re not a great team. We have a great player who leads a mediocre team. This isn’t the NBA, we’re not bringing anyone else in.

I say all this because I’m enjoying any wins we get. Even the crappy ones. And, we will get some great ones. We will. For the guy who said we can’t beat Marist, thankfully we don’t play them this season, right?

At the start of the season you professed that we can beat Duke. Now your tune has switched. Enjoy the wins. Its not that serious.
BTW quick, the posters who said that in these last few games before conference play they wanted to see Roberts, Earlington , Williams etc get time to see what they have because we all assumed blowouts, is that still your wish?
Who cares? Williams played 4 minutes in the middle of a tight game tonight and it's pretty clear he is not only the 9th man after Keita comes back, but he is also the only freshman that will play in comference games. Roberts obviously isn't ready and Keita comes back within the next two weeks.

He is playing more than 20 minutes a game on the 13th ranked team in the country. They too are undefeated and they have played a way better schedule than we have. Hard to say he made a bad decision.

Personally as a fan I'm happy we're undefeated, but I am very skeptical as to whether we can keep winning.

If I were a coach or player, I wouldn't be content in the slightest with how they played tonight (and most the season). Since I'm not in that position to impact anything, I rather not stress over it and just hope we keep winning. Games are stressful enough by themselves lol.

I agree they need to be better motivated going into games like this. I'd like to see Ponds 100% engaged at the start, and then once we blow them out start to experiment.

On to Princeton. Clark & Simon both played well, especially encouraged to see Clark shine. Intensity in general and especially on defense obviously needs to improve between now and 12/29. I'm hoping/betting it will, but time will tell.

Makes me wonder why Roberts can't get on the court. When your playing garbage squads, why not get him some court time? There is no shot blocking threat whatsoever. 5'8 dudes are attacking the rim.

There are two things I advise a lot of people on this board should do.

1) Accept we are not well coached and probably never will be - it makes the kool aid go down a lot easier. Just accept it guys. All I've seen in my life is Roberts, Lavin, and Mullin coached teams, I don't even know what a well coached st johns team looks like. Just accept it and enjoy life a little bit. Which brings me to my next point

2) Enjoy the little things - We are 8-0 right now and one of the last 11 undefeated teams in Division 1 college basketball. This is St. John's, we are not a consistently great program, we haven't been for a long, long time. I understand and respect people sharing their views and the negatives they see out on the court. But come on guys. We have won every game we have played so far. Even if it comes crashing down in Big East play like soooooooo many of you are predicting, can we please just not have a "sky is falling" attitude right now? On December 29th when Seton Hall kicks our teeth in by 35 points, then we can all collectively lose our shit together. :)

I just read a post from guiness saying I hate to say it but we are probably a one and done in the tournament. We will get into the NCAA and maybe win one and thats it. Okay? You guys do realize that would be the most successful St. John's basketball season in (checks notes), EIGHTEEN YEARS.

I understand my perspective is different because a lot of you were able to actually see the glory days so you hold this program to that esteem. But Mike Zaun, you are like 26 right? How long have you been following this team? Surely you've seen the last 15 years of our team right?

This is my main issue with the doom and gloom. A lot of people think we have a good roster so the expectations are at a level that the program hasn't even delivered on such George W was serving his first term.

We were what, 4-14 in the Big East last year? And we added Mustapha and LJ and lost Bashir. Clear improvement, but why are we world beaters now? We are a good team and nothing more. I hope you can enjoy the wins when they do come. Have a great night

This is one of the best posts I've ever read on this board in 15 years. So fitting that it came from one of the youngest fans on here.

That was perfect Jack. Thank you!

I've been a Fan since 94. I know what SJU is and what it isn't as you stated. When people come to grips with that, they will have a lot more fun.
