Moe Hicks leaving SJU

Hopefully Whitesell can draw up some plays to free him up.

@moe_harkless: @maxthehooper just made 47 threes in a row from the down corner. 92 out of 100 all together

We need someone to free up Harrison, Bourgault and Hooper. Heck, we haven't seen any picks under the Lavin regime.

You haven't seen picks? Nearly every play we run at the top of the key starts with pick.
Nearly every play we run starts with an ATTEMPTED pick at the top of the key and because of poor execution both the pickor and the pickee usually just give up and the play starts in raged fashion hence the poor half court offensive sets. We need more ball and player movement and hopefully the additions of Sanchez and Jordan plus more experience helps rectify that situation.

It is amazing to me that we have this incredibly good coaching staff, and still guys either don't how to set a pick, use a pick or roll once a pick is set. Considering how often good offensive opponents burn us on a simple pick and roll, you would think at minimum our guys would learn by observation

Branch impresses the hell out of me running a transition break. However in half court set I'm not sold.

In bold: This is where I believe having Sanchez and Jordan will pay dividends.

An attempted shot is still a shot. An attempted pick is still a pick. When will you learn :)

Pickor and Pickee made me laugh.

I don't think ball movement is an issue at all. Since Lavin ball movement I feel has been superb. But no question the execution of some 'sets' leaves something to be desired. Branch impresses the hell out of me running a transition break. However in half court set I'm not sold.

If by ball movement, you mean hot potato, then I agree. :woohoo:

Otherwise, I respectfully disagree.

Hmmm curious what some others see. No question first year with the Sr's was the best. It was immediate change you could see. Since then I think the losses pile up and we don't see so much good.

And here is highlights of their Butler win. If you click on the maker of the video (STL) there have tons of videos from the season with highlights and such.

Whitesell to St John's is a done deal as per Frank Cusumano tweet
Cusumano is a TV sportscaster and sports talk show host in the St Louis area
Welcome to the Big Apple, Coach!!!

This is good news. Hopefully will help make up for the loss of Dunlap.

I thought the ball movement was really bad for the most part last year. Rarely any urgency or skip passes.

98, I'm not sure what you mean by hot potato, I thought for the most part guys held on to the ball for too long.

Its because our "incredibly good" coaching staff has only been good in the areas of recruiting and skill development since Dunlap left. Now with this new hire the staff will be more complete ability wise

What I find interesting is that coach Whitesell was one of many candidates for the assistant coaching job last year (along with Alocco and D. Martin) and was passed up for D. Martin. I'm certainly glad that coach Lavin has re thought his priorities and the need for a true college basketball mind, or in laymens terms, an X and O guy. Man could we ave used this guy last year.

I was thinking the same thing, in terms of wondering if guys are watching the same game that I am. I don't mean that as a shot, since sometimes when I watch a game with guys who know basketball ,much better than I do, they make different observations. My recollections though, was that ball movement wasn't superb last year. The ball may have moved a lot, east to west without much purpose or success, as the clock wore down. With seemingly alarming frequency, a low percentage shot was launched as the shot clock expire.

Actually I was thinking picks for the shooters not those out by half court. Wasn't it obvious with Harrison, Bourgault and Hooper?

We never had more than one outside threat on the court at the same time. Hooper didn't play, btw. Setting screens for one guy when the whole team marks them everywhere they go, isn't going to work.

I'm not sure if we've ever had more than 1 in the same decade

Wow, thanks for letting me know Hooper didn't play. Obviously talking about freeing up these guys this year. C'mon!
