Moe Hicks leaving SJU

Here is a quote from one of the posters that could possibly pay dividends for us at some point (if Whitesell ends up with the Johnnies)....

This is a good question. I don't begrudge Whitesell moving on to a program that can pay him more but it sucks that it comes right after the July evaluation period as it puts us behind the 8 ball on all the kids he was the principal recruiter.

Like I stated earlier.... Whitesell's hiring could, possibly, open up some recruiting resources in the Midwest.

Not really sure how much he can help. Its STL we're talking about which is a notch below major programs. That being said I saw one 4 star recruit STL was after that looked intriguing. 7 footer from California.

Now that's just a silly comment? I am surprised at you Moose. St. Louis was ranked as high as 16 nationally during the season and certainly, had they played the Johnnies, would have cleaned our clocks. To call them a notch below a major is absurd.

I'm talking about the caliber of players they recruit. We are running at tons of Top 25, 50, 100 kids. They aren't. I'm surprised you thought I meant otherwise.

STL is without a doubt a notch below major. That being said, sometimes mid majors have great years and go back to being just another mid major in the crowd. Just because you are in the top 25 does not make you major. Good, yes but not major.

If we are going by conference affiliation, I have to imagine they are one of three teams vying for two slots that will give them the label "major".

And interestingly, the team's twitter feed says his replacement is pretty much in place. Any speculation on who it might be?

A search to fill the vacant position on @SJUCoachLavin's staff is already near completion. #sjubb #stjbb

As a DOBO, you'd think it was someone with NYC and local AAU ties.
.
I have no clue. I'd love to see Mike Dunlap back with us but I don't think this would be the role for him.
.
.Whoever it is, it will be a critical hire. Especially at this point where we're trying to land '14 recruits.

Not knowing too much about Hicks do you think he helped our recruiting or was that not one of his duties ?

DOBOs are not allowed to actively recruit per the rules, but some involvement in recruiting is simply unavoidable.

Hopefully Whitesell can draw up some plays to free him up.

@moe_harkless: @maxthehooper just made 47 threes in a row from the down corner. 92 out of 100 all together

We need someone to free up Harrison, Bourgault and Hooper. Heck, we haven't seen any picks under the Lavin regime.

You haven't seen picks? Nearly every play we run at the top of the key starts with pick.

Absolutely right. We run a ton of picks. I think our guys just haven't executed brilliantly.

The truth is Jakarr was a freshmen, how many frosh come in knowing how to read a ballhandler and set a good pick? Not many. Plus, Harrison isn't exactly the quickest ball handler to turn the corner.

But think back 3 years, whenever the game was on the line we saw a brownlee/hardy pick and slip. That was basically the go to play.

P&R = Pick & Relax

Serves minimal purpose the way/reason we've done it.

Speaking of Jakarr, I can't wait to see him play this season. There has been so much talk of Harrison, and Sanchez on these boards that I think ppl forget how much of a stud he is going to be this year.

I think Jakarr is going to be our best player this year. I think there's a very high chance of him leaving school after this year and getting drafted

The great thing is preseason arguments could be made for 6 guys to be STJ's best player this year, not all those would be incredibly strong (CO particularly) but none would be ridiculous. Personally there's a few I think stand a better chance than Jakarr simply because of the system, the positions and the situation. But if Jakarr's added an inch and 20 pounds of muscle or a credible 3 pt shot I might change my tune.

Nearly every play we run starts with an ATTEMPTED pick at the top of the key and because of poor execution both the pickor and the pickee usually just give up and the play starts in raged fashion hence the poor half court offensive sets. We need more ball and player movement and hopefully the additions of Sanchez and Jordan plus more experience helps rectify that situation.

@BWeixScout: As expected, #SLU associate head coach Jim Whitesell is heading to St. John's. Can confirm @Frank_Cusumano's report.

We're going to need some form of X's and O's this year because last year it was non-existant. We have the athletes, but it seemed like 75% of the time we'd just dribble around, run down the clock, and then someone was forced to go 1 on 1 with a tough shot near the end. It was ugly to watch. We need to improve here this year if we have any hope of being good.

We run tons of picks, but the effort has been spotty at best IMO. I'll see a guy lightly bump into the defender but the defender quickly gets back to his assignment as our window of opportunity closes. We don't seem to really get the defenders stuck behind picks long enough for a clear shot.

An attempted shot is still a shot. An attempted pick is still a pick. When will you learn :)

Pickor and Pickee made me laugh.

I don't think ball movement is an issue at all. Since Lavin ball movement I feel has been superb. But no question the execution of some 'sets' leaves something to be desired. Branch impresses the hell out of me running a transition break. However in half court set I'm not sold.
