Moe Hicks leaving SJU

Should we be worrying that the resignation was a sign of a broken promise or annoyance at being skipped over in favor of Martin? Hicks is held in high regard in NYC, so if he lands at the high school/AAU level instead of an open college job, I suppose it could hurt us if he is bitter about something. ...

Willard has two openings on his staff at Seton Hall and hasn't recruited well in NYC area. Given Hicks' local connections, any chance he ends up there?

I hope they call him. He's put in his dues and has been successful.

@DaveKrupinski: As @JonRothstein reported earlier, strong chance #sjubb hires Jim Whitesell. Strong XO offensive minded coach who excels developing bigs.

@DaveKrupinski: With #sjubb recruiting bigs heavy in 2014 and 15/16 being loaded with bigs, hiring Whitesell makes a lot of sense.

Was Whitesell responsible for the full court defense that Saint Louis played?

They were one of the best teams in creating pressure along with Louisville and VCU.

If he was responsible for their defense, just imagine how good our defense can be with all of the athletes that we have

?????????????????

There are a good number of posters who loved to question Hicks numerous times since his hire.

I was one that questioned it a few times. It almost bit us in the ass a few times which is why. Im also not sure it landed us any NYC talent. I'm ambivalent about Hicks leaving because I'm not informed enough to know whether he helped our staff tremendously or not. I am very encouraged about Whitesell though, so it seems a huge net gain if we can bring Whitesell in IMO.

Hopefully Whitesell can draw up some plays to free him up.

@moe_harkless: @maxthehooper just made 47 threes in a row from the down corner. 92 out of 100 all together

Zone Buster!

Here is a quote from one of the posters that could possibly pay dividends for us at some point (if Whitesell ends up with the Johnnies)....

This is a good question. I don't begrudge Whitesell moving on to a program that can pay him more but it sucks that it comes right after the July evaluation period as it puts us behind the 8 ball on all the kids he was the principal recruiter.

Like I stated earlier.... Whitesell's hiring could, possibly, open up some recruiting resources in the Midwest.

Not really sure how much he can help. Its STL we're talking about which is a notch below major programs. That being said I saw one 4 star recruit STL was after that looked intriguing. 7 footer from California.

I'm not particularly sweating that it was St. Louis.... He knows the bar will be raised at St. John's.

For instance, he could've been targeting a 2 or 3-star kid who may play with a 4 and 5-star player. Not to mention, relationships he's probably established with coaches (whether, it's a head coach of a high school or AAU program) throughout the Midwest.

The talent he worked with at St Louis last year beat Butler three times.

Saint Louis went 3-0 vs. Butler last year (Butler was ranked #9 and #15 at the time) and went 2-0 vs. VCU (ranked #24 and #25).

Head coach or not, a team must be well prepared to get those kinds of victories. I don't think SLU had the most talented players in the world, so that is extremely impressive.

Seeing that we have a relatively light schedule this year, I have very high expectations what we should be able to do this season with the manpower that we have.

Whitesell will be brought in as a preparation guy. He has X's and O's ability, but all head coaches have a guy to sift through film, help gameplan and prepare. At recruiting he brings us is the cherry on top. Lavin wants to go into the season with a prep guy. Chiles is a recruiter and Hines primarily a skills-guy. All top coaches have another head coach type as their AHC to gameplan. Hope we bring him on board.

All good points. I just hope his principles and preparation techniques jive with the higher ranked kids too. Sometimes those kids aren't as easily coachable as the kids he had at STL. Now if they are coachable and those techniques got those results with those players it bodes well for us moving forward.

I would be one of them. No so much for the loss of Mr. Hicks but more so of the opportunity to bring in a legit XO man and developer of big men which the team desperately needs. Would be great to see CO develop an offensive game and for the team to have a coherent offense.

STL forum doesn't want to see him go, so that's a good sign at least. He doesn't have to go crazy, we just need a solid x and o guy.

I think he could also be effective on the trail as well when it comes to recruiting big men, especially in communicating the vision for them during home visits. I really didn't know much about him, but I'm pretty excited after reading up on him. I hope it works out with Whitesell, and also wish Hicks the very best.

Now that's just a silly comment? I am surprised at you Moose. St. Louis was ranked as high as 16 nationally during the season and certainly, had they played the Johnnies, would have cleaned our clocks. To call them a notch below a major is absurd.
