Well I'm not sure giving kids money to play basketball is charitable(relating to the assistance of those in need). But the ROI for the guy handing out the money, especially if they're a rabid fan of the program, in emotional satisfaction could be far greater than true charity. And really if these guys have this kind of money to throw at kids to play a game do they really need the tax deductions anyway?

What some of the collectives are doing is have athletes work in sports clinics in disadvantaged areas. Whether the IRS views that as charitable remains to be seen.

You make valid points but supporters also know successful sports teams are important for the branding of the school. Schools such as Villanova, Duke, Providence, UCONN and Georgetown all had their academic profiles lifted and dramatic increases in their fund raising directly related to their success in men's basketball. Father Shanley's gamble on hiring a Pitino just two years after extending CMA was done so solely on this premise - that a successful basketball team is the catalyst for university growth and success.

One of our (now infrequent) posters OLV texted the 114 group about the article and as a horseman wasn't on MR's side.I don't follow the ponies so I have no clue. I just hope that if MR becomes involved he doesn't bring MF along with him for the ride. MF stiffed St. John's and is a cheap egotistical pompous SOB. I'm glad MF doesn't still have his power spot on WFAN because you know for sure if he did, RP and MF would be getting pretty cozy right about now.....RP, MF and MR all share the love of the horsies....so who knows how this shakes out.

I tend to agree it wasn't the most positive article. That said I think Repole was just frustrated that he got that close to the Derby and the scratch was tough. He has won a Belmont, a Travers and a Breeders Cup Classic along with many other prestigious raises. I would be shocked if he quits.

Andrew, I tend to agree with you because he is pretty passionate and heavily invested in the sport. That said, people can have a breaking point when dealing with any type of dysfunctional structure. As a fan of the sport I like that Mike Repole brings a presence and a real excitement to what he does with his horses and hope he finds a way to stay in the game.

Believe me, having been a horseracing fan for close to .65 years, the racing industry could care less what Repole thinks. He leaves and there are still plenty of rich people and Middle Eastern princes willing to pour money into the sport to replace his money. He is also blowing smoke. He gets all sorts of exposure thru his ownership of horses and loves filling the winners circle with extended family and friends. He is not going to give that up

Mike Repole’s horse Forte returns to the races today at Saratoga in the Jim Dandy Stakes. First race after the Belmont. Pletcher trying blinkers on Forte for the first time. Should be a great race as all of the others have posted similar competitive numbers. Most of these will try the Travers if they run well vs the ‘23 Kentucky Derby winner 🏆 Saudi Crown is the lone speed here and he could wire the field plus he is carrying 6lbs less than the others. Look for Forte trying to run him down in the stretch.

Why is Saudi Crown getting the 6 lb. differential? Is this a handicap?

Thank goodness for me that he was not DQ'd because I cashed a ticket on a very healthy pick three that ended with the Jim Dandy.

That all said, the stewards decision to not disqualify Forte was very questionable IMHO. Forte, (who I believe was clearly best) repeatedly came out on Angel Of Empire and forced him out several paths. Under the rules of racing (which varies quite a bit from jurisdiction to jurisdiction) that is a foul worthy of disqualification.

I expect Forte will likely be the Travers favorite and I would expect him to move forward off this effort. This has not been the best three year old crop, but Forte is in a position with a good win in the Travers to get voted the eclipse award for the best three year old of 2023.

I didn't bet the race, but Forte clearly should have been disqualified imho.
