The worst hire is hiring someone who has never been a HC before.
The worst hire is hiring a re-tread, or a long time assistant.
Is this hire CONFUSING or CURIOUS to the college basketball community? Sure that would be appropriate reaction. But if I was a betting man I'd put my money on Mike Anderson based on his track record more than some others.
Agree with what you're saying, however one of the hottest HC's in the country right now (as far as recruiting goes)has zero college(or pro) coaching experience.
I doubt any of the 5 star recruits are going to Memphis because the coach has superior credentials. I also doubt that the academics is a major attraction. Perhaps there are other incentives attracting these players.
What is indisputable is that our zero college and coaching experience staff was a dismal failure and are all back out west where they belong.
Over on JJ former redmen posters Marillac and Fun gave coach Anderson no honeymoon before branding him a recruiting failure for "just" recruiting two 3 star players in May. After 3 losing seasons and last place finishes in the Big East Fun thought Mullin needed a 5 year extension. After 5 weeks he thinks coach Anderson is a failure.
We finally have 4 outstanding and experienced coaches. Not one scrimmage has been held yet. Anyone being negative about this staff should look in the mirror. Not everyone looks like you so get over it.
72 I enjoy your posts a lot and you crack me up a lot but the knock on Monte was uncalled for. He didn’t like Lavin and he wasn’t happy with the job Mullin was doing by the end so color has absolutely nothing to do with how he feels. He’s entitled to his own opinion without it being an agenda. And I know for a fact he is an equal opportunity porn lover
Who the fck mentioned color????
If some feel negative because CMA is black they have a serious problem. My reference was to a few younger punks here who have brought up his age. Yes, he is the oldest coach we have hired but some of you will be 60 some day and will still be working off your kid's college tuition. Some of this garbage is more prevalent on Johnny any goes Jungle. I'm not even sure what Monte would have said that had any reference to CMA as he was addressing 1st year coaches without previous experience. I responded to that.
Not to belabor the point, but.....you may not have mentioned the word “color”, but it sure as hell sounded to me(and many others apparently) like that’s what you were implying. To be blunt: that my initial concerns about CMA were motivated by racism. Thus my response. Regardless, if it was age you were talking about I should be one of the last people on this board that you should have been addressing since A. I’m older than CMA, and B. my first choice was Cluess, who is also older than CMA.
We've had 3 African American head coaches and I can't remember their race being brought up as a negative. Even with the CMA hire race has not been mentioned once. However, his age has come up as has DeMeo as an older assistant. The implications have been that some have issues with older hires. How long will he be around, etc. I'll be happy if he is successful and gets two 5 year contracts. But his success will determine that.
As far as the thread I responded to ( which I already referenced ) there wasn't negativity by you or Moose.
You're exact quotes were " I'd put my money on Mike Anderson based on his track record more than some others.
And...
"Agree with what you're saying, however one of the hottest HC's in the country right now (as far as recruiting goes)has zero college(or pro) coaching experience." By Monte
Since you addressed Penny Hardaway who is black HOW would I interpret that and your agreement with Moose as racist?
My point, poorly made, was addressing some who clearly were hoping for young Hurley and were disappointed we hired a sexagenarian. I also had made clear my response had nothing to do with what you said.
Lastly, if I wanted to call out one of you as racist I would and will.
DeMeo’s age? Isn’t he somewhere in his 40’s? I was unaware that his age was any issue?
Steve has been coaching since 1988. He graduated college 32 years ago. He is 3 years younger than Mullin but he is in his early 50's.
One comment I recall was bemoaning the fact he started in a D1 schools like Providence and Iona but focused on his being relegated to junior college late in his career. It implied that if he were a good coach coach why after 32 years was he coaching in JC.
I really don't think any of the commenters are age biased but pissed we didn't hire someone else they were more familiar with like Hurley or Cluess,
