The worst hire is hiring someone who has never been a HC before.
The worst hire is hiring a re-tread, or a long time assistant.

Is this hire CONFUSING or CURIOUS to the college basketball community? Sure that would be appropriate reaction. But if I was a betting man I'd put my money on Mike Anderson based on his track record more than some others.
Agree with what you're saying, however one of the hottest HC's in the country right now (as far as recruiting goes)has zero college(or pro) coaching experience.
"Not everyone looks like you so get over it" WTF is that supposed to mean?.
Dear 72
Would you please be so kind as to respond to Montes question. Your response was a little perplexing.
Thank you in advance.
First off my apologies to Monte as my comments regarding the negativity about this staff, their recruiting, et cetera, were not intended to directly implicate Monte in my comment and should have not hit the quote button but simply the reply button. It had zero to do with Monte who is a great poster. As I said "all those" who have cast a shadow over our 4 coaches who have excellent credentials from Anderson to DeMeo, are prematurely questioning their abilities. Some here see themselves as "coaches" and "talent evaluators" and love their own opinions. Some have knocked CMA's age and a couple of geniuses have wondered why DeMeo never became a D1 high level coach rather than demotion to the junior college ranks. I can understand being disappointed in the failure of our native son who had a generous 4 years to try and succeed as a college coach but to start all this negativity because CMA has not fit the mold of previous coaching failures is very provincial. Give these guys a chance to open practice with the players before deeming next season a lost season.
That’s nice but who are they?
I see you have not been following closely. These are the recruits folks have been moaning about. Probably an upgrade from last season's freshmen class given Mullin's disdain for them by having them sit most of the season.

For starters, apology accepted. But to clarify a few things: after voicing some initial concerns about CMA I have been nothing but supportive. My comment to Moose was not meant as a knock on CMA. Secondly I was one of the first posters to say “CMA gets a COMPETE pass on anyone that he brings in at this late juncture. I’m happy all 3 young men joined us. I am hopeful that all 3 be serviceable 4 year players for us. And let me just reiterate: I am thrilled with what I have seen from CMA in the short time he has been here. I was also thrilled with what saw from Fran, Jarvis, Lav and even Mahoney when they first arrived. I am not comparing CMA to any of our past coaches, but if history has taught me anything, it’s to not get overly excited about anything having to do with our basketball program

I doubt any of the 5 star recruits are going to Memphis because the coach has superior credentials. I also doubt that the academics is a major attraction. Perhaps there are other incentives attracting these players.
What is indisputable is that our zero college and coaching experience staff was a dismal failure and are all back out west where they belong.
Over on JJ former redmen posters Marillac and Fun gave coach Anderson no honeymoon before branding him a recruiting failure for "just" recruiting two 3 star players in May. After 3 losing seasons and last place finishes in the Big East Fun thought Mullin needed a 5 year extension. After 5 weeks he thinks coach Anderson is a failure.

And I know for a fact he is an equal opportunity porn lover
Who the fck mentioned color????
If some feel negative because CMA is black they have a serious problem. My reference was to a few younger punks here who have brought up his age. Yes, he is the oldest coach we have hired but some of you will be 60 some day and will still be working off your kid's college tuition. Some of this garbage is more prevalent on Johnny any goes Jungle. I'm not even sure what Monte would have said that had any reference to CMA as he was addressing 1st year coaches without previous experience. I responded to that.

I understand and empathize with the cautious approach. It's just preposterous for some to question the past and future success of a coach who has over 3 decades of experience vis-a-vis the previous shit show. I had serious doubts with our last three coaches. Norm never showed any success to warrant the job. Lavin had success but had abandoned coaching for over 6 years. Mullin and Mitch has zero everything and from day one I didn't see a happy ending. Finally we have an experienced staff with a healthy mix of knowledge. I will remain positive with this particular staff until the 2021 class. Folks should appreciate a positive '72 for the next couple of years.;)

Not to belabor the point, but.....you may not have mentioned the word “color”, but it sure as hell sounded to me(and many others apparently) like that’s what you were implying. To be blunt: that my initial concerns about CMA were motivated by racism. Thus my response. Regardless, if it was age you were talking about I should be one of the last people on this board that you should have been addressing since A. I’m older than CMA, and B. my first choice was Cluess, who is also older than CMA.

Age is a valid discussion when a hire is already 60. Successful or not, you may be looking for a coach in as little as 5 seasons. Guys who have built sustainable programs like Boeheim and K are outliers because their programs continue to be desirable places for top recruits to park themselves. We haven't had a coach go beyond 6 seasons since Coach C, and one thing we really would like is a long successful run by one guy. Has no relationship to coaching ability, its more a question of how long someone will be around. I did favor Cluess, but the same issue applies, except that Cluess would be coaching on his front porch and not 1000 miles away from home.

CMA comes across as a young 59-60 and looks to be in great shape. 5-10 years of CMA with leaving the program in good shape meaning successful seasons and returning talent would not be a bad thing at all and is what we are probably hoping for. Would make this a more desirable job and who knows may even have successor on staff.

My Dear Friends,
How about we forego the current references being made to race and stick to discussions on CMA and staff.
We are all St. John's fans and should be pulling in the same direction.
Respect goes a long way in these forums.
Peace.
