Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Not sure whether it's been said already, but a win like last night is critical for recruiting.  Create a buzz and continue to show growth and improvement on the court and recruiting should pickup exponentially.

Kids have responded and respect, like Mike. Not perfect, but IMO his impact on kids is nice to see and meaningful beyond hoops.

i've noticed it throughout the season, but there was a specific moment yesterday that stood out to me.

Champ had gotten fouled pretty hard, looked like he was undercut. i think it was on a rebound attempt.

he was pretty upset.

he was being subbed out at the point and he was clearly upset, complaining as he approached Coach.

coach pulled down his mask and immediately started, i wouldn't say yelling at Champ, but certainly commanding authority.  what i loved though, was Champ immediately recognized the situation, put his arm around coach and listened.

to me, that was symbolic of coach's authority. someone that commands respect. and the team admires.
I noticed that too. I thought it was a poignant moment in their relationship. Good stuff.

Just two seasons ago our players and coach were racking up technicals, which distracts the team and hurts them.  I love how our team is disciplined, no wild celebrations, no trash talking, no moaning to refs.

CMA is a terrific mentor and has fathered these players into becoming a mature group.  He has their respect and attention.  They believe in him and he in them.  I love the family this team has become.  Tough luck to those 4* & 5* prospects that don't see what is in store for them as a member of SJU.

And he also stayed on the bench waaaaaaaaaaaay longer then he normally does.  At one point I thought maybe he got hurt on that fall.  Maybe a little punishment for getting mouthy w/ coach.

Could have been that but it seems CMAs approach this year has to get Champ one 5 minute or so rest each half. Yesterday we excelled when he took his breather.

I too, was concerned that Champ was hurt on the play where the Nova player undercut him . Also agree , if Champ was ok , he stayed out too long as the game dwindled down to crunch time . But , he asserted himself when he got back in and had the Double Double .  One thing that needs remedy and doesn't seem to be happening , is letting Posh run the Offense in the last 10 minutes ! Dunn is a valuable player but , his incessant dribbling gets him double teamed and he turns it over .. Plus , he never really gives it up to a teammate to keep the passing rotations going . He had Cole open in the Corner several times and ignored him and dribbled to the middle and wasted shot clock . It's a legit critique . But , he's a tenacious defender . If Williams were healthy , I liked Dunn coming off the Bench but , the fall Greg took last night was not the therapy for a bad back .

Something I saw last night that hasn't been mentioned, when Moore picked up his 4th foul he turned and looked towards the bench and pointed to his head as if to say I have to think and I get what I just did wrong.  CMA left him in, I think because he saw that Moore got it, and he played the rest of the game.  This is a kid that was just benched for a game for not meeting team standards.  Looks like the message got through and he is all in with the team.  Great to see that.

Anderson has handled both Moore and Cole masterfully. He kept faith in them with some bumps, but got buy in re them being essential pieces, not stars here . To their credit they seem on board, many Jucos with big egos after starring at lower level of play sulk and never get it. Coaching!

Moore is long and automatic when crashing the offensive glass.  Cole becoming automatic from the outside.   Both playing solid defense now.  We need em both.

Folks, the thread isn't being closed.  I understand that a mod created this issue with a joke, but relax.   Its not going anywhere.

If anyone has any questions about that or feels like offering guidnce on how we can be better at our jobs, please PM one of us.  The forum isn't the place for those discussions.

***   Also, for those of you that STILL haven't figured out how to use the new quote function... its time to 'phone  friend', or PM a mod so they can explain it to you, or just stop quoting people.   When your comments are burried in the post you quoted you make that part of the conversation unreadable.

Sad, this thread was created by our friend Mike Zaun (who if you click on his name is no longer a member here), too bad he's not around to celebrate with us, would be interesting to hear his current perspectives.

So then maybe the mod's post should have been removed, not the responses to it /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

He has super powers.  He'll have to do that himself.  /media/kunena/emoticons/cool.png

And congrats on figuring out the quote function! /media/kunena/emoticons/silly.png

I believe he has his own website now so he's likely saving that amazing insight for everyone that posts there.

excellent point.  We'll see if there's a way to improve that.

I thought the same thing too.  CMA has gotten through to the likes of Moore and Cole even when they were not playing well or did not meet his standards.  His style of coaching seems to be working well with this team.

At one point or another earlier this season, pretty much every single kid on this team except Champ was maligned. Some(IE Cole is too slow to play at this level, etc) more than others. Criticism is one thing, but writing kids off so early in the season is a whole other. So happy to see these kids grow as individuals and as a unit. Excited to see them continue to grow.

Maybe we should have faith in a coach that has never had a loosing record in 19 seasons. A coach that has had to recruit against some of the biggest sharks in the business in the SEC. Maybe we should give him and his experienced staff a little more credit than we do as opposed to having knee jerk reactions when things are not going our way.
paultzman put up a chart earlier showing the players stats this season to date. We have 9 players that contribute on this team. 2 are playing at all BE level, something no one and I repeat no one on this board predicted. 4 more in Cole, Dunn, Williams, Moore are averaging in double figures or are borderline approaching double figures. Wusu is playing at a level far above anything anyone could have predicted and may make the BE all rookie team. And this is a guy who bordered on being a 2 star recruit. Roberts has certainly improved as of late and the Duke has been a little bit of a disappointment. So 7 players are playing above their rankings while the Duke and Roberts are contributing but still finding their way.
clearly the man knows what he is doing. And by the way zero drama, I repeat zero drama something we are so unfamiliar with following our last two coaches.
just remember we are never as good as our last win or as poor as our last defeat.
Listen to the words of our dear sage Panther.
