Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Would seem an inside-out game would also benefit Cole significantly, but that's obviously not possible without a low post presence.

At this point, I feel bad for CMA more than I do for SJU and its fans.  We are at least use to losing and being at the bottom of the pack.  Poor guy is at least trying!  I sense his passion.

To the drive and kick, and inside-out comments, I say......yes please!

Cole is a very good shooter.  Get that boy 4 or 5 open looks per game.

Cole has the tools to be a good contributor, but it seems like he hasn't found his comfort level yet (contrast to Moore, who has).  I'd like to see more of the ball finding him for spot-up 3s, and less of him trying to create in traffic.  Unfortunately our offensive sets look nothing like Creighton or Nova which may be a problem for him.

Agree here.  Cole isn't a good athlete nor a great finisher driving to the hoop.  If we could get more open looks for him on the outside, I'm positive he'd knock me down.  He's got a beautiful stroke and is definitely a shooter but needs a little time and space for the most part.  Need to find him at the right spots. I think he's more of a shooter off the bench rather than a full-time starter type though.

Totally agree. He is a perfect player on a team that runs sets to get shooters open and guards that penetrate and kick. Unfortunatle CMA runs less plays in the half court offense than Mullin did (who had and NBA style offense) and that is hard to do.

If we had more roster balance (a good pg, a big who has some offesnive post moves to keep defense honest, a shooter, and a slasher) things would open up a lot more for our role players. The roster inbalance has killed us for the past 20 years and it will continue until we get a formidable big who can rim protect, rebound, and score down low here unfortunately.

The best PG we have had in the last 20 years was Erick Barckley . No doubt there . Erick have any kids who play hoops ? Just asking.

Since we are in 2021 and Erick left after his sophomore year 1999-2000 I don't think he qualifies anymore for "last 20 years..."

I'll go with Marcus Hatten followed by Dwight Hardy followed by ShowtimeHill.  If Hill didn't mess up his knee the Norm Roberts era may have gone very differently.

All the choices of Hatten, Cook , etc are personal and worthy . Some more than others . Splitting hairs , I liked Marcus Hatten a lot but , would think  of him more as a combo Guard than pure PG . Cook played 1 year but , what might have been had he stayed longer ?
I would even consider Barckly as the best PG since Mark Jackson , goes back a ways .

Totally agree.  Hatten and Hardy were not pure point guards.  Hill was also a scorer first ,although other than Hamilton, there weren't a lot of options.

But each of these guys had the ball in their hands most of the time and effectively played the point.  I totally forgot about Ponds who of course belongs on the list.

If I were to make a list of our best point guards over the past 20 years based on performance/value  as opposed to pure point guard skills/potential, my list would be as follows:

1. Marcus Hatten
2. Shamorie Ponds
3. Dwight Hardy
4. Darryl Hill
5. Omar Cook
6. Rysheed Jordan

I'd love to have any one of those guys in my top five on the team today.  Heck, I'd love to have a healthy and engaged Marcus Lovett.

AND so far the best coach we had in past 20 years was Jarvis.

     Sorry , how about last 25 years ?  Or , 21 ?

Can't help but wonder if Melvin Watkins not coming with CMA to SJU was a bigger issue than most thought.

Hog faithful?  What do you think?

Lost count how many times I've thought to myself (or yelled at TV), why is he not calling a timeout.

Maybe he thinks he can bank the TO's like some places do for sick/vacation days.

Except that every time he does call a TO, we respond with a bad offensive possession.

I'm from the Dean Smith school of taking timeouts anyway, so it doesn't bother me too much.

I think Anderson is a teacher.  He wants his players to learn how to respond and play through situations without needing a timeout to regroup.  The same thing goes for Posh getting minutes when those minutes aren't necessarily helping the team win - he wants him to get the experience so he can grow more next year.  Also with giving Cole extended run yesterday even when he was awful, he doesn't want to kill his confidence since he believes the kid can be a contributor.

These things don't do us any good as fans this year or in the moment - we want to win THIS game and THIS year.  But if Anderson knows his business and his players - which I think he does - more of these decisions will pay dividends than not as time goes on.
