MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

Ledlum looked like sophomore year Sean Evans. Jenkins lack of poise surprises me.

Accelerate Wilcher
Looks like Wilcher is this season's A.J. Storr. I don't think Wilcher is near ready. I trust CP to decide how much court time he gets. My guess is he may have to rush him along quicker than expected, as the need for a back up point, or at times an alternative to Jenkins, is very clear.

Pitino just stated that our front court depth is terrible. I get the feeling that he may have overhyped Zuby just a bit.
The quote was alarming to me. He’s knocked Soriano down pegs multiple times. But then hyped up Zuby who looks very raw like so many big men we’ve had over the years. Then you chase Ledlum who looked like a deer in headlights tonight. Who told him to imitate Jalen Rose? And then he calls out Drissa as 8-12 mpg player.

That’s plenty of depth. Unless you’re saying you don’t like the players you have but that’s a whole different argument.

Yes, I'm very disappointed in much of our guard play but let's give props to Michigan's backcourt but of McDaniel and Burnett who exploited our lackluster defense.
McDaniel was allowed to be a hot dog and he relished it and made any of our guards look like dry mustard. He played 38 minutes and had a career game and probably played 8 more minutes than he should have but Martelli obviously wanted to rub the mismatch in Pitino's face.

For a Harvard grad, Ledlum is not playing smart basketball. We need his rebounding more than his offense so I expect Pitino to reinforce that with him. He took the same bone headed shots that cost us the scrimmage against Pace.

Taylor needed to take more shots; in fact, he should have taken the shots Ledlum was attempting.

Pitino was very embarrassed by the play of his starters. He basically benched all of them with more than 9 minutes left in the game because of their piss poor execution of some pretty basic things.

I expect Pitino to work our players hard after this game but let's remember these guys are all new to each other and will be a different team by January, especially with the addition of RJ Luis who will make up for the Ledlum's offensive deficiencies.

As for the imaginary Posh-McDaniel match-up, I don't think Posh would have slowed down this kids incredible speed one iota. The kid just played with abandon and he knew when to pass and when to drive. As for the other imaginary match-up with Walt Clayton Jr. at the point, even at Iona, Daniss was the quicker player. Our guards allowed McDaniel to go around them too easily.
Our backcourt was too timid and that ladies was the game.
Their backcourt had a day. One dominated the first half and the other put the game to bed in the second. Idk if they play that same game if we meet them again but tonight under the lights…they certainly did.

And Drissa getting more of his minutes makes me wonder if Zuby is in Rick’s dog house. Practice issues maybe?
You may well be on to something. He did go hard when he was on the court. I don't see Traore contributing more than a couple of minutes a game. We definitely need to find some help for Soriano somewhere, or it's gonna be a very long season.

I said this before tonight's game and I'll say it again: I do not think that Ledlum has the size or physicality to be a PF at this level. I don't even think he wants to be a PF. I think he sees himself as a SF or 2G.

Unfortunately he doesn't have the skill sets for either. I'm not saying that he won't be a useful piece moving forward, I'm just saying that I don't see him being much help to Soriano down low. I hope to be proven wrong.
I think the coaches at Tennessee thought the same thing after working him out.
I'm still happy to have him and his rebounding skill but he is a very bright guy who will learn from his mistakes at this level. I dare say our front line would have been rail thin without him.

Ledlum looked awful and the worse it got the more he tried the hero ball thing. Jenkins is the most consistent, only consistent outside threat. Dingle had a subpar game shooting and looked bad on D. I thought Zuby did some good things but not enough. They’re out of sync and not communicating on D. Out of position all night. Gotta get the ball to Soriano down low a lot more. Kick out if he doesn’t have a shot.

I’ve said it a few times but it’s worth emphasizing this point about Zuby. Kansas literally didn’t really play any true bigs the entire season last year. Their “big” was Jalen Wilson who is more of a 3/4 than a true 4 and definitely not a 4/5. They were desperate for any type of frontcourt player to be able to provide competent minutes for them especially in the B12. Zuby still couldn’t see more than 5 or 6 mins a night on that team.

I expect him to develop and for Pitino to get something out of him, but he’s still a big work in progress

The bottom line is there's nothing positive that can be taken from this game. Well, rebounding. I had thought Michigan dominated us on the boards, but the box score had us with eleven more than them. The Rutgers scrimmage was an eye opener because the team shot so poorly. Then they couldn't overcome Pace's tough defense, thus more poor shooting. Now tonight!

I'd like to believe the shooting will come around...but the brunt of the players are grad students and seniors. They should have learned to shoot by now. Somehow, this was men against boys...high majors against mid majors.

Defensively, we looked like an Anderson coached team.

We all know Pitino's track record. It's almost a given he'll turn the program around. That doesn't mean we can't be disappointed in the meantime.

If he is not as good as Drissa, Rick is right about our PF guys being awful. I expected Zuby to provide some physicality, rebounding and strong interior D. We’ll see soon enough.
I think Luis' return will help there a decent amount. Him being back should take all the minutes away from Drissa as Taylor can probably soak up the minutes at the 4 when Ledlum needs a rest. Without Luis the flexibility to play Taylor as a small ball 4 isn't really there. Hopefully we stay healthy and get it to the point where the minutes are 30/10 for Soriano/Zuby at the 5 and then Ledlum & Taylor can be the only 4s and Drissa retakes his role as lead bench cheerleader

There are a million reasons why a "die hard fan" might have decided not attend the game. Maybe he was up with his sick child last night and was exhausted after working all day, Maybe he had a date with a hot babe and is looking to get laid. Or maybe, just maybe, after watching shit basketball for most of the last 20 years he decided that he'll wait for the team to prove themselves on the court before shleping to MSG and paying big bucks to watch them. Don't matter what the reason is, the fact that someone didn't attend tonight's debacle doesn't make them any less of a die fan than those of us who did attend.
I’ve always found the concept of “you need to GO to the game to be a real fan” silly.

Like you mentioned, there’s a million different reasons someone could not attend a game.

Anyone who watches this team on TV and actually cares about the direction of the team is just as much of a fan as people who go to games.

I probably went to over 50 games during my 4 years at St. John’s. Before that? I watched the team religiously on tv because I grew up in Delaware. I wasn’t any less of a fan those years as I am now.

No one should be made to feel like less of a fan for not physically being at the game. That’s wacky

Just got home from watching a bunch of kids who’ve never played together, and none of whom—except Soriano—have ever played First Team Major Conference basketball. As I listened to the morons in Section 210 scream “let’s go blue!” I fantasized about a team of Posh, Wusu, Storr, Gardner. and Soriano kicking their asses….
I was in 210 also. The only thing worse was the kid sitting behind me shrieking every time Michigan scored.

He was 1-2 not 1-7.

He did have 3 fouls in 9 mins. But the third was BS and Michigan player tripped himself.
You are correct! I was giving him the discredit of Ledlum's poor shooting. That said, he has not learned to run an offense yet and he is a freshman.

The team came out strong and then fell apart. I do think that first 15 minutes is an indication that we can have a competitive, exciting season.

A few thoughts.....

  • After some trepidation over the expected attendance, it was a nice size crowd.

  • Our defense needs work. Many breakdowns leading to easy baskets. Good news -this might be the easiest thing to fix.

  • I really like Ledlum's aggressiveness, he's a bull. That said, he has to do a better job of finishing around the rim.

  • Zuby is a surprise. After reading the NY Post article about his motor, I expected more.

  • I appreciate Drissa, but this may be too high of a level for his ability.

  • Considering the big picture, I would like to see Wilcher get some decent minutes this year. I know he racked up three quick fouls (in just 9 min.), but I see a high upside.

  • Michigan fans are annoying. Chanting "Free Jim Harbaugh" at a basketball game was one of the dumbest chants I can remember.

  • No excuses, but I do think Michigan goes on to have a very good season.
