MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

Paid attendance was slightly over 14k. Late arriving crowd and student section filled in nicely.
After I left early and had time for train went up those new stairs in Penn to get a cheesesteak sub. Couple students were buying food and took out their iPhone ti count their change . WTF !

Wish this game

At least they still were paying with cash!!

First 15 minutes was a hell of a game. There were moments I thought St John’s was about to blow the lid off with a stop and a bucket but they just didn’t happen.

Burnett could absolutely not miss a shot even with a hand right in his face from 24 feet away. Guy had a hot as hell first half and that alone sunk us.

If Burnett was even above average (and not perfect) we go into the half very close and I’m not sure this team runs out of steam early in the second. It’s hard to play a guy who seems to virtually be automatic on a given night.

Ledlum was abysmal. He’s fine against low level teams but he needs to know his role against better teams and not try and be a LB turned PG.

DJ needs to tighten his grip and not let it fly as much. He’s just not an all conference guy at this level. But that doesn’t mean he can’t improve and be a key player and lead us far.

I saw basically no pick and rolls. Maybe it was by design to take them away but I think that unsettled the offense. They needed an answer and we never really got it. Joel played well overall IMO but we need to get him the ball. This is a Soriano + Dingle axis here and they need fed.

I know Wilcher is a freshman in game 2 but for being a top 40 guy he certainly seems to be timid out there. Hopefully that changes because he not only has the chance but absolutely needs to contribute more.

I don’t think Michigan out hustled or out efforted our guys but they certainly got every bounce. Whether that’s from their missed 3s or just random bounces…the basketball gods seemed to favor them tonight.

I’d much rather take this loss tonight then lose to this same or similar team (even in a close game) in late March. This team will get better.

I'm sure there are a lot of fans and posters that are feeling like all is lost already. The way to avoid that feeling is to understand that while CP is a worthy hall of famer, he cannot waive a magic wand and be expected to rebuild a failing program in game 2 of his first season. Yet many here believed that Coach Pitino's mere presence would end more than 20 years of suffering instanty. We are St. John's fans, and suffering is our middle name. It won't be the constant it has been for years, but endure it we must for a little while longer.
It’s not the loss that’s the issue Ray. It’s the fact that we weren’t even competitive.

The fact we got blown out does not make Rays post inaccurate. Growing pains are called growing pains for a reason. I wish I could tell you all that if we are gonna lose, it’s always gonna be by one point and be a super good game. But that’s just not the way it works sometimes. This team has a long way to go

Thankfully I had to leave with about 5 minutes left in the first half and just got home. Getting thumped like that is pretty deflating. Did anyone play well for us? Looks like maybe Joel & Ejiofor? Now I'm watching Knicks lose to Celts; bad night all around.
I wish I had left MSG with 5 minutes left in the 1st half. Even better, with 5
minutes gone in the 1st half

Just got home from the game. Two takeaways.

1. Michigan fans are obnoxious as hell. Think UConn level (at least those sitting behind me in 119).
2. Not worried moving forward. They needed a dinner served cold. Take care of the ball and they will be fine in the long run.
Are you talking about peppers in 119? Sitting with Syracuse?

The problem with a game like this is that after all the work Beast and his buddies put in to filling an arena, that goes out the window when you are getting your doors blown off in a game you were predicted to win. Once again, if you build it (with wins) they will come…. Period.

I had to step away before I could look at this thread. I mean what do I call this? Disappointment is fair. I am not upset we lost but it’s the “how” and how easily they disintegrated.

Rick alluded to it in during the exhibition season about Defense and getting people to understand the effort required. Boy was that prescient. The easy uncontested layups was terrible. Hats off to the one Michigan player who lit it up but we never seemed to cover him.

As for individual performers Ledlum needs to calm down. Too many times he forced and didn’t let the game come to him. He is not big enough to challenge bigger players. He needs to be far more selective to be effective.

In summary adversity has come early. They need to stick together and have plenty to work on. We have the right Coach to get it done. Keep the faith. Gonna be a bumpy ride but Rick will figure it out.
Best controlled summary of the game. We all need to keep this in perspective.

Exactly! At the bar with Eric and some friends before the game and I said to them that it's really important that we play a close game with them. I wanted a win but a close loss would have been ok IMO. I put money on the Johnnies. I never expected a blow out.

Actually, I am waiting to hear from the posters who listed all the reasons a “true” SJU fan was required to prove themselves by spending their time and $ on tonight’s game, er, debacle!
A die hard SJ fan does show for this game. Nothing wrong with anyone choosing not to attend. But, unless its finances or a schedule conflict, if someone CHOOSES not to attend, they aren’t a die hard SJ fan.

A long way to go is putting it mildly Jack. I understand what you’re saying. But, for us fans who’ve been around 40+ years like myself , time is running out and I’m younger than some on here who been fans even a lot longer than I.

Since I know the outcome before I watch the 1st half replay, I think before I go to bed, I'll watch more highlight clips of Amar killing Syracuse or the Giant Slayer win over Duke

Game kind of reminded me of that Maryland game in Norm’s 3rd or 4th year. Thought we had a decent team finally. Went to Kean’s before game, by time got to my seat Maryland was winning 47-2 or something like that.
Shouldn't have ordered the Mutton
