Michael Chandler (OREGON VERBAL)

After that article on Zagsblog, yes he sounds like the ideal big man we need but with all of the problems that he has faced in the past, withdrawing from 3x different schools, and being linked to such shady people i dont think i want him anywhere near my team. This looks like a guy that has trouble following him wherever he goes and is propense to making bad decisions.
Ill take another year without a big man over a scandal 3 years down the road.

wtf batman...explains a lot. I see bad times ahead for ucf. Hope all these kidsend up in good programs...would love chandler to be here with us but anywhere else butucf

Not super athletic at all, but a big body for a kid his age.

Reminds me a little of Shawnelle Scott

He's actually real athletic for a kid his size. Big kid. Kevin Ware not an issue for Louisville. Just sounds like some of these kids were associated with some shady hanger-on a few years ago. Never good for these kids, but guys like that are all over. Hopefully they are all distanced from that guy.

The article said that Caldwell refers to chandler as his nephew. Dont think he had that relationship with Ware. Plus you know how much the NCAA loves us. They would be looking for something to find

Yes, guys like that everwhere. Shame they try to get rich by using these kids.

Anyway, you have to assume that Coach Lavin has done his homework if he decides to go for this kid.

Coach knows what's at stake and would never take that much of a gamble IMO if there is a potential scandal in there somewhere by getting this kid.

Landing this kid would sure be interesting.

The article said he called the kids he was recruiting his nephews. Guys like Caldwell are parasites. They attach themselves to kids who are young and susceptible to their BS. You can't write a kid off because of that. If Coach is pursuing him and decides he's an ok kid I totally trust his judgement about Chandler. If the NCAA clears him to sign and play with a new school and Coach wants him and gets his commitment, I'm 100% for it. The kid has a back to the basket, low post game, the strength to power through contact and is pretty athletic for his size. Just think what he could be with conditioning and coaching from our great staff. Another future NBAer on the team and frankly, having several of those guys on your team is what wins championships.

Hes definately worth the risk. We have plenty of scholis. We need another high quality big if Moe leaves.and there arent that many high quality bigs left and Obekpa may go to Cincy. Although I like Sanchez and Gift I would rather see them as backups , I would love to get another high quality big to complete the starting line up, so we can really make noise next year. He does have question marks re: qualifying and also has other quality suiters after him. If he comes here he can step right in and be a star.A line up of Branch, D LO, Dom/Amir,Sampson and Chandler would be very competitive.

I have al the respect and trust in Lavin but he AND the Administration better make sure they are right on this kid before getting involved. We've been through enough nonsense. I trust they are doing the right thing long term for the Program. :holdbreath:

Unless there are potential NCAA violations w Chandler, what do we have to loose?

I don't see what the issue is. The kid is waiting for the NCAA. If the NCAA gives a thumbs up, then he's free and clear, no? Much like Kevin Ware. No doubt we need him to be on board with SJU, but should the NCAA clear him, there shouldn't be any concern over NCAA issues. He was a young kid when he committed to a few different programs. I trust the staff has done their homework.

NCAA may well clear him academically, but there's always....

You know that for a fact? Not really great to pin a hanger-on on this kid forever without knowing if there's any real truth and what the circumstances are. Chris Mullin was a troubled alcoholic in his time here. He's now a great success story. Rob Thomas sold drugs as a kid. He got a degree at SJU. Caron butler had sold drugs and had a gun charge. He turned things around and become a productive nba player and citizen. I could go on forever.

Just curious, has there ever been a potential STJ recruit that you didn't think was:
A. Saintly.
B. A future all-American
C. A future Rhodes scholar
D. All of the above.

Likewise has there ever been a STJ recruit that turned us down who you didn't think was:
A. Overrated.
B. Not a good fit.
C. Not a good character guy.
D. All of the above.

No, but I can tell you a poster that is irritating..

I'll answer the question though. Yes, there are plenty who haven't been great fits. I dont comment on rhodes scholars, we dont have any. I just don't like pinning negative innuendo on a kid when I don't know any better. Its not really fair. I try not to get involved in that. Im a positive guy. If you'd like to cast stones, be my guest. You're casting them at Chandler and now at me. Tells me more about YOUR character than Chandler's though...

Chandler may well be a good kid mixed up with the wrong people through no fault of his own.

But he was mixed up with an ex-con street agent who steered him towards a school that rarely attracts Top 200 talent let alone Top 50 talent.

If that doesn't raise questions, then what does?

As the Moose wrote on JJ back in September:

"We shouldnt be touching him with a 10 foot pole."
