Mets

Almost too easy but my least favorite Met in a long time comes up very small once again today.

right now he is just not the same pitcher, although he did hit 98 on the radar gun and appeared to be throwing as well as he has all year. Announcers said yesterday his career ERA coming in was 2.88 and his run support over his career has been the worst in baseball. If they are to make a serious run he will have to put out strong outings in at least 8 or his next 10 starts.

Or take him out of the rotation when Wheeler comes back.

Jose coming up tomorrow. Can't wait - Bart Scott.
I wouldn't mess with Flores just yet. These guys don't get hot often so I hope they ride him out.

He was hitting .224 before going 6/6 Sunday and the game yesterday, now I believe he's around .257

He will still find time to play. Why not stick him at 1st tonight, while he's hot.

I wouldn't mind that especially with a lefty (I think) going tonight. Reyes def brings something we don't have.

The rookie, Giolito?, a righty, is pitching tonight.

Opening game, big series, Colon just doesn't pitch well against the Nationals and Collins has no clue as usual, just leave him in there to get hammered.

He's opting for season ending surgery. Has no feeling in his fingertips.

Seems like us Mets fans were way too harsh on the guy. Could be career ending.

Why too harsh? He never said a word about any physical problems until Monday so now we should believe he pitched poorly because he was hiding a problem all season? If so, that is nothing to be admired or an excuse for being one of the worst regular starters in baseball this year.

You don't wake up one morning and have this condition, it is a progressive condition and could very well explain his performance. He did repeated say he just didn't feel right during the season he just didn't offer specifics.

Everyone has a bad year. May have been the injury. He lost me when he said his shoe collection would be the envy of most women. Way too much information.

To be fair, you are everything as a Mets fan that you constantly give people crap for being as St. John's fans.

Huh? To be fair, not in the least. I have given "crap" to SJU fans for not giving Mullin a reasonable (any) time to show what he can do and criticizing him for nonsensical and completely speculative "issues", which is my opinion. Collins and Alderson have been there long enough for fans to form positions, agree or disagree, as has Harvey. If Harvey pitched all year hurt and didn't tell anyone that is more evidence of his "me first" attitude, while his poor pitching, even if caused by a "hidden" injury, was hurting the team. If he told the team and they mutually agreed he would keep pitching my opinion changes but that does not appear to be the case. If you think differently, fine, but funny you didn't offer any concrete answer to my question of "why too harsh?", which I would certainly respect, you just replied with "crap."

Team made the WS last year and has been good, if not great this year, while dealing with tons of injuries. Yet the next positive or non-whiny post you make about the Mets will be the first. Just one guy's perspective.

Willis Reed plays hurt in a game and he is a hero. What about Curt Schilling to use a baseball example. Were they selfish ?. Harvey plays hurt throughout the season and he is a bum. It would have been in his best interest to call it a season a while ago since he hasn't gotten the monster contract yet rather than risk further injury

I might not like his antics sometimes but he can play on my team anyday.

There are also a ton of examples where guys refused to come out of a game - most of the time they are called gamers. Jack Morris pitched a 10 inning WS shutout. Bill Buckner wanted to be on the field in game 6 when Boston was about to win a WS - yet his manager took most of the crap for keeping him in and got fired for it. Rusty Staub refused to sit down when he badly injured his shoulder in the 73 WS (crashing into the RF wall I believe), and I remember him going 4-4 in one game after even though he had to underhand the ball to an infielder who who run out to the outfield to catch it.

For the record, Ralph Branca gave up the monumental home run to Bobby Thompson in 1951 (he later found out the Giants were cheating in an elaborate system using binoculars in the scoreboard and a buzzer relay to the dugout) but he never said a word. Instead, Branca, who won 21 games at age 21 for the Dodgers, tried to pitch through a shoulder injury the next season to prove he wasn't a bum, and ruined his arm and career. (This story was retold in a book that reveals the Giants had cheated from midseason on in 1951)

Once late in his career, Stengel sent out a late inning defensive replacement for DiMaggio between innings. DiMaggio wasn't informed and had trotted out to center, and was greeted shortly by his replacement. the Clipper was incensed when his sub cautiously told him that "the old man" (Stengel) had sent him out there. DiMaggio snarled at the payer and told him that if Stengel wanted him out, he should come out to center field to get him. Stengel, knowing his place, stayed in the dugout and DiMaggio in center field. (story retold in a Hero's life)

I'll never fault a guy for wanting to be in a game. Dislike Harvey for a lot of other reasons if you must, but being a gamer isn't one of them.
