Mets 2024 Season

Great drama. Baseball gods giveth and taketh away. Series was destined to be split going back to CitiField. Mets never quit.
I don’t think Mendoza quit by any means and if the baseball gods intervened it was because they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Very, very down on Mendoza right now, he obviously has great leadership skills, baseball acumen not so much, sometimes I think, not at all.

Was no reference to Mendoza quitting. This lineup doesn’t quit. Also baseball gods may have felt Wheeler deserved a win and evened the series today. All subjective

This one hurts right now but I can’t wait to hear that rocking crowd on Tuesday night. We’ve had to fight through so many important road games the team earned this home field advantage coming to them

I understand and my bad, I did not mention Mendoza because of any reference you made, it was because I was going to criticize him and did not want that interpreted as me believing he quit. Just a poor job on my part.

I too am confused as what’s going on with the pitching choices at this point. Everything feels out of wack. Who do we trust in the bullpen? That’s what I’m most nervous about

It’s going to be very interesting to see how it plays out because the Phillies favorite bullpen arms have also been exposed in these first two games so that’s their biggest question mark as well

What was out of whack with tonight? Butto was rested, Diaz came in the highest leverage time of the game, Megill was also rested. Seemed totally inoffensive with me

Megill is not a reliever first of all, Butto should be a last resort IMO. My problem is this one pitcher, one inning nonsense and then seemingly they are not available the next day. I agree with Jack Williams, our bullpen is out of whack and has been erratic all year to say the least. This coddling of pitchers just blows my mind. Megill had no business being in the game in the 9th today, I don’t care if he was Rip van Winkle rested. And the lack of confidence this bullpen has had all year to challenge hitters reared its ugly head again today, especially with Diaz.
If Mendoza is going to treat the bullpen in the playoffs like it’s the regular season, which is what he did today IMO, using Butto, but especially Megill in the 9th, I don’t like their chances. And by the regular season, I mean not using your best relievers two days in a row; using Diaz in the 7th should be an absolute do or die last resort, not a strategy, especially when none of your other “best” relievers are available. But in reality I don’t like pitch counts in general, and the irony of the constant nibbling which drives up those same pitch counts. Diaz faced 5 batters, went to 3-2 on 3 of them and was clearly afraid to throw the ball anywhere near the plate against Harper, walking him on 4 pitches which like Lindor’s earned walked against the Brewers, set up that 8th inning. He has great stuff but threw more balls than strikes today and frankly was fortunate Schwarber had a check swing strike 3 on one of the 3-2 counts on a pitch inside and in the dirt to end the 7th or he would have walked him to load the bases.
I was as happy as anyone we won Saturday but even in that game why take Peterson out after only 50 pitches, is he now a reliever because I don’t see why, he is their best starter IMO. Then Garrett threw 23 pitches in two innings, less than both Maton and Stanek did in one. He wasn’t available to come in at all? What about Ottavino? He certainly did not have a great season but he is very experienced and would have been a much better choice than Megill for the 9th. He is certainly rested and if you are not going to use him, why is he on the roster? And IMO if Megill has been shifted to the bullpen, he should have started the 7th IMO, not Butto; one, because he has been pitching better than Butto by a country mile and two, he has no experience pitching in pressure packed end of games. Just another terrible Jon by Mendoza handling the bullpen but also another terrible job by the Met relievers.

I guess I use the term out of whack because while I understand the thought process behind going to Diaz when they did, they are still trying to get a 7 out save from the guy. He's thrown 130 pitches in the past week. We are running him into the ground.

If we are comfortable having Diaz throw 130 pitches in one week, it starts to make me question what our manager's rules are in terms of who we can use vs who we can't. Is it as simple as if the guy threw yesterday, he can't go today? I get that is usually the rule, but in the playoffs, with a day off incoming, I would have had everyone available. But I know there are certain rules these guys follow to manage arms that I don't fully understand admittedly

This idea that guys can’t pitch on consecutive days in the PLAYOFFS takes this “manage arms” mantra to the height of absurdity IMO.
Also, I am still waiting for the explanation as to why arm injuries have gone up significantly since the advent of “coddling”. Like a lot of the “new world” thinking, let’s address more injuries by suspending common sense and address it by more “coddling”.

Tough loss. We still hold home field advantage, but that kid last night was the weak link for them I feel.

Not having a competent lefty in bullpen really hurts. It’s tough to blame this on Mendoza.

The list of who is trustworthy out of the pen is infinitesimal at this point.

Would have been awesome if Danny Young was actually good

We probably won’t see another Ryan 235 pitch game any time soon.

All criticisms understood but I'm trying to remind myself that this team is exceeding every expectation at this point in Stearn's leadership. To a man they are giving 100%. If they fall short on results it won't be because of efforts or bad msnagerial decisions. Hinddight is perfect.

Our game tomorrow is in the 2nd week of October and we came within inches of putting the Phillies in a very deep hole in their own house.

This year is different. I won't be shocked if we go further but also know wherever we do end up, Stearns and Cohen will make investments in improvement.

LGM!!!!

Side note: Darling explained this season or last that in his day, you would throw your best fastball a few times per game, preserving arm strength to go deeper in innings. Today, he says, everyone throws as hard as they can for as long as they csn from pitch one. It's the reason,he says, so many young pitchers arrive in MLB already having had Tommy John surgery.

We are not exceeding expectations, we have been the best team in baseball since early June, the expectations were obviously wrong as they usually are. Last year SJU was the “shiny bauble” and everyone was predicting Top 25 before a game was even played, I am still waiting. And I for one felt the acceptance of consolation by much of the fan base in playing UConn tough in the last game nauseating.
For this team to come “within inches” is NOT good enough and I for one do not find solace in “almost”. Mendoza or the front office or whoever is making pitcher availability decisions are blowing it. No reason Diaz can throw 130 pitches in a week and the other front line relievers are unavailable because they threw 20+ the day before.
This team is more than good enough to win it all NOW, the heck with falling back on “investments in improvement”. There are no guarantees in sports, you seize the moment when it presents itself and it has definitely presented itself.
