Had a chance to kill their spirits tonight and didn’t do it
That’s never good

I don’t think Mendoza quit by any means and if the baseball gods intervened it was because they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Very, very down on Mendoza right now, he obviously has great leadership skills, baseball acumen not so much, sometimes I think, not at all.Great drama. Baseball gods giveth and taketh away. Series was destined to be split going back to CitiField. Mets never quit.
Was no reference to Mendoza quitting. This lineup doesn’t quit. Also baseball gods may have felt Wheeler deserved a win and evened the series today. All subjectiveI don’t think Mendoza quit by any means and if the baseball gods intervened it was because they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. I understand and my bad, I did not mention Mendoza because of any reference you made, it was because I was going to criticize him and did not want that interpreted as me believing he quit. Just a poor job on my part. Was no reference to Mendoza quitting. This lineup doesn’t quit. Also baseball gods may have felt Wheeler deserved a win and evened the series today. All subjective
Megill is not a reliever first of all, Butto should be a last resort IMO. My problem is this one pitcher, one inning nonsense and then seemingly they are not available the next day. I agree with Jack Williams, our bullpen is out of whack and has been erratic all year to say the least. This coddling of pitchers just blows my mind. Megill had no business being in the game in the 9th today, I don’t care if he was Rip van Winkle rested. And the lack of confidence this bullpen has had all year to challenge hitters reared its ugly head again today, especially with Diaz. What was out of whack with tonight? Butto was rested, Diaz came in the highest leverage time of the game, Megill was also rested. Seemed totally inoffensive with me
This idea that guys can’t pitch on consecutive days in the PLAYOFFS takes this “manage arms” mantra to the height of absurdity IMO.I guess I use the term out of whack because while I understand the thought process behind going to Diaz when they did, they are still trying to get a 7 out save from the guy. He's thrown 130 pitches in the past week. We are running him into the ground.
If we are comfortable having Diaz throw 130 pitches in one week, it starts to make me question what our manager's rules are in terms of who we can use vs who we can't. Is it as simple as if the guy threw yesterday, he can't go today? I get that is usually the rule, but in the playoffs, with a day off incoming, I would have had everyone available. But I know there are certain rules these guys follow to manage arms that I don't fully understand admittedly
Would have been awesome if Danny Young was actually goodTough loss. We still hold home field advantage, but that kid last night was the weak link for them I feel.
Not having a competent lefty in bullpen really hurts. It’s tough to blame this on Mendoza.
The list of who is trustworthy out of the pen is infinitesimal at this point.
We probably won’t see another Ryan 235 pitch game any time soon. This idea that guys can’t pitch on consecutive days in the PLAYOFFS takes this “manage arms” mantra to the height of absurdity IMO.
Also, I am still waiting for the explanation as to why arm injuries have gone up significantly since the advent of “coddling”. Like a lot of the “new world” thinking, let’s address more injuries by suspending common sense and address it by more “coddling”.
We are not exceeding expectations, we have been the best team in baseball since early June, the expectations were obviously wrong as they usually are. Last year SJU was the “shiny bauble” and everyone was predicting Top 25 before a game was even played, I am still waiting. And I for one felt the acceptance of consolation by much of the fan base in playing UConn tough in the last game nauseating. All criticisms understood but I'm trying to remind myself that this team is exceeding every expectation at this point in Stearn's leadership. To a man they are giving 100%. If they fall short on results it won't be because of efforts or bad msnagerial decisions. Hinddight is perfect.
Our game tomorrow is in the 2nd week of October and we came within inches of putting the Phillies in a very deep hole in their own house.
This year is different. I won't be shocked if we go further but also know wherever we do end up, Stearns and Cohen will make investments in improvement.
LGM!!!!
Side note: Darling explained this season or last that in his day, you would throw your best fastball a few times per game, preserving arm strength to go deeper in innings. Today, he says, everyone throws as hard as they can for as long as they csn from pitch one. It's the reason,he says, so many young pitchers arrive in MLB already having had Tommy John surgery.
