Mets 2024 Season

I think they got a better matchup, both Wild Card and potential NLDS, by not winning game 2.
Milwaukee has been tough as nails vs the Mets. Maybe better matchup because their starting pitching isn’t as deep but let’s not kid ourselves. Brewers are a problem. Now I prefer playing Fillies vs Dodger Dawgs. We are well acquainted with them. We will give them fits.

Were we smart enough to leave a starting pitcher or two behind in Milwaukee? No sense in making starters fly twice in two days if they couldn’t pitch.
Hahaha. Nope. Luis Severino was last seen swilling Coors Lights and champagne in the visiting clubhouse in Atlanta. He’s our Starter Game 1 tomorrow in Milwaukee. 🍺🥂

This win today could only be done by the Mets. Everything about it was Mets personified.

You cannot find a player better than Shohei Ohtani in this game, but find me a player more VALUABLE than Lindor. You cannot.

On April 12th I took my 5 year old daughter to our 1st game of the season against the Royals. Lindor had been so abysmal and the fan base so hard on him, that everyone in the stadium gave him a standing ovation when he came to bat each time that night to try and pick the man up. For this guy to turn it around from that low point and perform at the level he did is something the fan base will never forget.

In college football they always take about the Heisman winner’s “Heisman moment.” Lindor had his MVP moment today and frankly another huge one in Toronto with that 9th inning homer. While Ohtani was belting 4 homers and 15 rbi in blowouts against the Miami Marlins on a loaded team, Lindor changed the course of an entire franchise and fan base with his level of play this season. Bravo #12!!
I have posted numerous times my disdain for individual awards, absolutely hate them.
Anyway, in regards to Lindor, I find it hard to believe there could be a more valuable player to his team this year. Big hits, big stolen bases, stellar defense at arguably the most important position, an amazing upbeat attitude it seemed every moment on the field or bench, just an absolutely terrific player, leader and teammate. It is really a privilege to me to be able to see him play over the course of a season.

He was slated to pitch second game today if they had lost first game. I’m figuring Mets will get swept this way no disappointment and winning is gravy.

Swept? I hope not. Playoffs is a crap shoot. They’ve come this far. Why not see if they can hang around awhile.

I know anything can happen just not going to get hopes up to inoculate myself from disappointment if they should lose.

For me, the measure of a team is over 162 games, not in the playoffs. The Mets did the hard work over the course of the year, my disappointment would have been not finishing by missing out on getting in the tournament after getting into the drivers seat for the last week of the regular season. Short series anything can happen to any team.

On camera, at least, he was drinking (and spraying) water only. On camera, I emphasize.

For me, it would have been demoralizing to have not made the playoffs after where they sat after taking the Phillies series. It would have been same old Mets failing to seize the moment. Saying that, the playoffs didn’t seem realistic just 2 months ago, certainly not the way the season started into late May.

At this point, aside from getting the crap smacked out of us, or not putting up a fight at the very least, it’s all gravy from here on out. I expect Milwaukee to win, they seem to always have our number and they obviously have the home field, but they’ve underperformed in the playoffs many times, so…you never know. It’s been…a season, already 🤷‍♂️

Baseball is the weirdest of sports in some ways, in the 2nd game today Darling shared that the Mets were 0-47 going into today when trailing by 3 runs or more in the 8th inning, so what happens? Baseball is so full of oddities so another of my favorites and then lights out - Cecil and Prince Fielder not only both hit 319 home runs in their careers BUT they also both hit:
97 2 out
49 4th inning
25 5th inning
and 18 9th inning HRs……….

Severino traveling makes sense since he was the game 2 starter if needed. Peterson, Quintana, and Manaea don’t since they couldn’t pitch anyway.

Pretty unique situation leaving Milwaukee Sunday knowing with 90% or more certainty you would be coming back Tuesday if you made the playoffs.

So many strange angles to the game yesterday. Mets getting 6 runs in an inning after being shutout and down 3 nothing.

A rally started by the 4 th OFer Tyrone Taylor with an absolutely GREAT AB.

Then Alonso (his defense!!) makes a great play stopping a double which might have tied the game. Irony ball was hit by Jared Kelenic who Diaz was traded for. Of course Diaz didn’t cover as he was staring off into space.

The final out of the game with the tying run at second was none other than ex Met Travis D’Arnaud. Imagine that. It was crazy.

I'm looking forward to today. Hopefully the team's celebratory vibes carry over and they play loose. Playing with house money.

A caller on wfan this morning said at 1 point during the season the Mets were 86-69

It is time for the Polar Bear to come out of hibernation or look for another team in 2025. Do I think he will finally produce--NO. (PS-I would love to eat my words.)
I hate to pile on but the guy seemed to be partying more than anyone in the clips I saw. Couldn’t help but think about the old Frank Cashen quote about it's always the players who contribute the least who spray the most champagne. I know Alonso is better than that but he has literally contributed next to nothing in any key situations.

Alonso deserves a lot of the criticism he gets. But I will give him some credit where its due, he continues to play a pretty solid 1st base. If Diaz covered first on that one grounder down the line in the bottom of the 8th, that could have been a signature play for Pete

The key for Pete is always the same. Can he lay off the sliders and pitches away that time and time again leave him looking foolish? We will see. If he can get going here it would be massive for us

Personally, I am most nervous about Sevy today, after a doubleheader yesterday, the Mets are going to need their pitching to lift them up a bit, and it starts with Severino. He got smacked around a bit his last start and only went 4.0 IP. We need more today

I really don’t like getting on Alonso because the guy genuinely seems to care and there’s no doubt he is a popular guy in the clubhouse. The thing I see, and I admittedly know nothing, is that he always squeezing the hell out of his bat and is always trying to pull everything. I don’t know if the coaching staff tries anything different with him or they just let him be (I remember David Ortiz used to say something along the lines of f the shift, I’m not changing what I do) but something seems to be in his head at the plate. More than ever too. I’d love to see the guy break out, it would make this whole story somehow better.
