Met 2017 Season thread

It's amazing to think how many significant injuries the Mets have had - Thor, Wheeler, Harvey, Matz, Familia, Cespedes to name a few. Can't really blame anyone. It's just a part of the game and wiped out what should have been a playoff season.

The problem is that this is the second or third year where you could argue injuries have a major impact on their season. They can't keep doing the same things and rolling the same guys out there expecting things to change without changing something. They should be looking at a number of things from the types of players they acquire, conditioning, spring training, all of it.

I heard a caller this morning suggest that the Mets should try and sign a veteran pitcher. The pitcher he was talking about was owed $13M next year. Now think about it, in theory the Mets have 1-deGrom, 2-Syndergaard, 3-Harvey, 4-Matz, 5-Wheeler, 6-Lugo, 7- Gsellman,. That is 7 viable starters. I won't insult people with Montero, Flexen. Yet, the caller is right (because of injury) it is possible they need yet another starter. It would be hard to justify paying that kind of money on an eight starter. The question is will they ever get their players healthy and on the field at the same time?

So three minor league pitchers (#18, 25, 28 Sox prospects) for an Addison Reed rental.

Not bad.

Can't believe Bruce wouldn't bring back a bag of balls.

I want the Mets to resign Bruce after all he's having a season similar to Cespedes' last year. And he certainly is an excellent team player both on the field and in the clubhouse. Did you ever see him jog after fly balls or never hustle on the bases?

I like Bruce, but also be aware that he's extremely streaky and can go ice cold for very long stretches (like the second half last year). All in all though a 30 hr guy is not easy to find. I'd keep him, but also am aware that I wouldn't feel that way when he goes into a deep freeze.

Remember during that cold period was his initiation with N.Y.fans, quite an adjustment from the meek Cincinnati fans. It's a long season pretty difficult not to have cold stretches. .

The fucking Bruce trade is horrible

They should sell team and open up a .99cents store. I honestly believe they don't like the team or the fans and part of why they have not sold it is to spite the fans.

No. With the WIlpons, it's all about how much profit they can generate, and if it means winning, that's just a means to profit. Makes Mets fans long for the late Steinbrenner's passion for winning (even with the incredible amount of nonsense and meddling on his part)

The fucking Bruce trade is horrible

Next year's MVP!
What's wrong with getting a single A relief pitcher with an almost 5 era and outside the top 30 prospects in the Cleveland organization for a 30 homer major leaguer? :silly:

We as Met fans have to look at things through a different prism since it's all about the $$$$ with ownership.

With that being said you can't really look at this trade and hate it. Cleveland was willing to take on the entire $4 million remaining. So basically the team saved 4 million dollars in exchange for nothing. Not a bad deal if you look at it that way.

He's a FA. If you want him that bad go out and sign him this offseason to a 5 year $75 mill deal

rumor was the yankees offered better trade prospect wise but with mets picking up more salary and they said no

typical disgraceful mets

MJ, FWIW its now being reported that the Yankees were not offering much either and were never willing to move off paying only a portion of JB salary. Also, Yanks apparently pulled out of a Neil Walker trade at he deadline using his medicals as the reason. However, sources say the Yanks realized they were going to get Sonny Gray and they (yes the Yankees) were worried about adding too much payroll.

I dislike the Wilpons as much as the next Mets fan but no one seems to notice that there was not much of a market for power hitting outfielders. The only guys moved were JD Martinez and Yonder Alonso (1B) and both did not exactly yield A list return.

They will deserve to be killed if the net result is no added salary during the offseason. They will have cleared a whole bunch of dead money and they better plan on spending that money as they will have holes to fill. (CF, 3B, C)

Everyone has made excellent points regarding the Bruce trade. My perspective: what caliber of prospects would be worth a trade to the Yankees after watching him:
Walk off against the Mets in the upcoming Subway Series
Walk off in the playoffs, giving the Yankees a big win
Walk off in the series, and learning to hate the number 28

As a Met fan, you know that any/all of the above would be probable scenarios with Bruce in pinstripes, so I can live with the lousy trade. At least I will sleep better at night, as opposed to grinding on the sports angst. And more good news on that front, Power Murph is down to .329

Actually I forgot he is a FA this offseason. Yankees have to be joking to cheap out on paying his meaning salary for a guy who could potentially carry them to playoffs or at least help.

Nature of baseball is to salary dump high talent if they are approaching free agency and if their team is out of running. You grab what you can I guess.

It is not a bad business move but Met fans are always going to be weary of the Wilpon's going back to post Madoff penny pinching ways. Have so much bad credit with the fans that something like this smells fishy.

Are the still claiming the "Bernie Madoff Effect"?

Current market for rental sluggers is a bag of balls.

So if FA-to-be Jay Bruce is gone in August of a lost season or October of a lost season, does it really matter?

Only thing I care about for the remainder is Rosario and Smith.

Even though I do like an outfield of Cesperes, Lagares and Conforto I'm afraid we will need more power hitting in the lineup. Have a feeling they won't resign Walker and will use Reyes in a utility role. What's to happen with Cabrera - second or third? That leaves Flores as a capable fill in at first or anywhere in the infield. Hopefully we can secure a power hitting third basemen in free agency.

Looks like Moustakas is a FA but I doubt we will spend.
