Max Hooper

did we use a scholarship on Hooper

I believe he will be an academic scholarship, not an athletic scholarship.

Interesting I haven't heard that. Thought once you visit officially you pretty much have to go that route unless your slimey like Pitino and Calhoun.

Also wouldn't it have been said already by someone in the media that its an academic schollie?

Seems like a real solid pickup by St. John's. Anybody who watched STJ this year is well aware that the team was awful at shooting the basketball. Outside of Harrison, there was really nobody who could consistently knock down a perimeter jump shot. Now, while Hooper might not be a starter at the Big East level, he has the potential of being an important piece for this team in the future. Instead of bad offensive droughts, Lavin will have the option of bringing in a player like Hooper or Bourgault and try to break that zone.

While this class may not be as sexy on paper as last year, it seems that our staff is filling holes rather nicely. They needed a point guard and landed Branch. They needed size up front and have landed Sampson and Sanchez so far. They need shooters and signed Hooper and Bourgault. Considering STJ went into this season thinking they might only need one or two players this class, it has recovered quite nicely. Hopefully, they are able to land at least one more big man for this class and go into next season with a full squad.

If that's the case, will he count against our allotment of 13 schollies?
Amir Garrett's scholarship is being paid by the Cincinnati Reds but it does count against the 13 schollie limit
It would seem to me that Hooper's academic schollie (if that's the case) would count against the 13 limit as well

I'm not sure about that. Wasn't the big guy at uconn paying his own way to give Calhoun an extra schollie ?

Considering his father is wealthy and hes smart enough to get into Harvard,it would be a shame to have to use up a BB scholi.  Or is Marco the one w the wealthy father? I cant remember.

He counts toward the 13 even if he buys the school.

Do not feel coach would bring him on if he coach not play at the big East level Think he is going to surprise

Guys will disagree, but the last REAL pure shooter we had was Chris. I know there have been a few guys since that were supposedly in that category, but not really. We have had plenty of scorers, but no real dead eye shooters. It will be nice to have that again.

I think Harrison is one for sure. His stats were hurt by poor shots first part of the season. If Harrison isn't a shooter, I don't know who is?

Right you are and despite him we were still among the worst teams in the country from three. Geez, I hope that's over because it's a huge equalizer in today's game.

I do to, which is why I can't find any fault to adding kids like Bourgault and Hooper. There is room for them on this roster even if they aren't gazelles. Basketball is a game where shooters can thrive. The ball moves faster than the feet. The proper offense can utilize shooters no matter their level of athleticism.

Tom, a walk-on on academic scholarship does not count toward the 13 if he visited the school on his own dime. Some schools have 3 or more walk-ons on academic scholarship at the more prestigious schools.

He's not a walk-on.
Coach's kids count toward the 13.
So do children of univerity employees.

Forgive my ignorance, but is Hooper's dad an STJ employee?
If he's not and we didnt spend any money recruiting him, I don't see a problem with him walking on and not taking up a ship, Plenty of coaches go out and get "select" walkons.

Thanks DoodyNY33 -

What more could we possibly ask from Coach Lavin and staff???
The past two years, he inherited a horendous recruiting situation with nineteen seniors etc., a poor program, no money, no attention, irrelevancy…

he recruited a top class!

This year with some many unexpected variables to include his health all he and his staff did was put together another fine group of players - some of which are likely to remain four years!!

Coupled wiith a star or two (one or two years at the school) we continue to roll!!!

I'll take it. I'm enjoying watching this team and this program - once again.

all the best

Phil Missere did not count towards the 13 until he was given the full ride. Did the rule change since then?

Missere was not offered a ride while on an official visit.
He tried out for the the team as a walk-on for 3 years until he finally made the cut as a junior.

There's a way to do it. Bradley at UCONN moved to walk-on status to make room for Drummond. Smith and Kuric aren't on scholarship at Louisville.

I thought the rule was, if you were "recruited" by the school you couldn't then walk-on. And one of the ways they determined "recruited" was if the school paid for your official visit.

Maybe somebody else can clear this up.

Its not that I dont like Hooper. But using one of our last scholis on someone who didnt get pt at Harvard doesnt make much sense to me. From what I read Wood is a better player and a shooter and really likes SJU.If we offer Wood a scholi we will only have one scholi left which would go to a big. Of course if we dont have to use a scholi, his recruitment makes more sense.

As far as I know, Max was on an "unofficial" visit.

per MaxPrep: Hooper was rumored to be visiting campus this weekend as Orlando Sanchez and Bourgault were on their official visits.
