Maryland Eastern Shore, Tue. Nov. 27, 6:30p, FS1 / 970 WNYM

SJU continues to win and KenPom continues to drop us. Now down to 47. At the current rate of descent, SJU will go undefeated and fall out of the top 100. Mods, feel free to move this to the complaint thread. 6-0, I'll take it.

As a St John's fan for 50+ years, we don't often have blow out wins
We tend to play to the level of our competition
This is why I hoped to play better teams in the non league schedule
Our record might not be as gaudy but we would be better prepared for the Big East teams
By the way, Georgia Tech was not ranked very high in the preseason ACC polls
They may be a "name" opponent and out "toughest" test, but they're not a great team either
Btw figgy is best player on the team ive said this before, furthermore he had a clean block under the basket that official scorer missed. The guy does all the little things well like going up with his left hand to block a shot on his left side. Something Patrick ewing never learned....
Figgy has a been great, he busts it all 40 minutes, very refreshing to see. But...Ponds is the best player on this team

Knocking the team for Andino's performance is unfair criticism. I would like to know what his coach was thinking keeping him in to pad his stats against the last 5 on our bench. Didn't he miss a year with injuries?

A few things I'll point out, after watching the game:

-We wanted to see our bench involved and most say we had to get them minutes, well Roberts and Williams certainly got some minutes. Mixed results obviously, but it was well known both were raw and would need time to develop.

-This game was a blowout from the start. Not sure everyone on the team kept the same intensity all game long. (Figeroa never stops).

-After the last couple of games, fans here called for Ponds to be less of a ball hog. Well we got that tonight. He didn't even bother looking for his shot because of the blowout.

-Clark's poor game was a concern, but he'll bounce back. Also remember, we're down a starting player that we had penciled in for big minutes, and was our only big man. Going to need him back for the Big East.

-Hate it or love it, this team is running an NBA style offense, that's the way it's going to be. We took over 30 three pointers tonight.

-I still say we haven't reached our peak yet, The upside remains very high, but the team still have growing and gelling to do. We are already starting to see minor improvements (Mikey Dixon for one), but three point defense remains a concern.

Coaching or lack thereof will kill us this year. We've got some good pieces that need to be coached. Need better defensive plans and to work at it. Team plays too undisciplined, too often.
Time for CM to earn his pay.

Morning after thoughts:

-6-0 for first time since 2008 or 2009...pretty nice to see albeit against a soft OOC but we will obviously take it.

-NC, I did see that Mullin moment pregame high-fiving himself. Hilarious and would have made Barstool and other viral pages if people posted it IMO. Assuming most missed it.

-Figgy has looked exactly the same as from tip off when some people told me I was going too crazy about him. His talent and athleticism was apparent immediately and it still shows. He plays with by far the most intensity on the team...if only others can match it. He's perhaps most consistent too.

-Pumped to be 6-0...again can't be overstated...but this team still does not look significantly better than last year from a coaching front and there are some legitimate concerns regarding chemistry, lack of inside game, extremely problematic 3PT defense to put it kindly.

-Can someone please take Simon in practice, set him aside and do drills where it's 2 on 1 with him fighting to make layups and finish? Love the kid but no one misses so many easy buckets at the rim including last night. He hits all rim. Must work on his touch...should be shooting ball UP not straight. This way if it catches rim it can still possibly bounce in rather than a brick.

-It's possible to be happy we won but express concerns thus far (especially in the 2nd half) to this point simultaneously. It's not virtuous or smart to ignore warning signs and dismiss them. Imagine a doctor warning you about smoking long-term and you constantly dismiss the doc as being "negative" and mock him for his concerns. You can be healthy in your 20's and 30's and laugh at the doctor and mock him more, but once you hit 40+ you may not be mocking him anymore. Let's hope we get at least some of these concerns figured out because we a real test against GT and a sneaky test against Princeton coming up. Then conference play which is what will really tell us where we are.

I agree with nearly all of your points - good post. Ponds did a great job of distributing and was pretty good defensively last night. As Coach said, there'll be other nights we'll need him to score big and he will.

No matter who you play you should always be trying to build good habits. The game last night and the style they played did not assist in building good habits. The elite teams in college hoops play cupcakes but they still play the game the way they would play against top 25 team. We did not do that last night.

I agree Manhattan. As an example, against some of the smaller and less talented opposition SJU has thrown some cross court passes that they have gotten away with. This will not work against bigger, faster players. We also have taken to shooting quick threes without even getting into an offensive set. No chance for a rebound. Hopefully, their is some coaching to correct fundamental play. Here's hoping.

We could have keyed on him better, who ever is going to guard him stay in his face and don’t worry about helping out defense against this team we need not need help against better teams we will have a problem with great shooters it’s part of the game.We also have great shooters it’s just a matter when playing great teams that we just have good shooting nites.Clark has to do much better than he has been fouling out so early against this comp is what perhaps a freshmen does not an exp player.still needs to be in the blocks ,Jones ate him for breakfast down low
Roberts liked his energy but is out of place at this level, hope he can develope otherwise this pick was a bust. Not mening to be too net since there were a lot of positive things done on the court last nite, just skeptical when we face top 25 teams with ht

I agree but I also think that playing all of these cupcakes create bad habits.

Yup!

There are posters that see only the mistakes, and others that are eternal optimists. Then there is reality. First reality is that every team we played would be picked at or neat the bottom of the Big East, and would likely finish there. So I could see why a few close games would trouble some fans. On the other hand, the Big East games will usually be close. There is not a huge talent difference from top to bottom. When you have Ponds and other playmakers, we should have a good feeling about our ability to win close games. Second reality is that there is no need to peak in November or December. The team has a lot of room for growth. We have yet to play together for 40 minutes, or even 35. So I expect the team to get a lot better over the next 2 months.

It’s going to be a long season for some fans. Like it or not, Coach wants to play fast and that leads to early shots and a lot of 3-pt attempts. We shall see if adjustments are made if the team isn’t hitting a decent % of their shots but I have a feeling that this team with live and die based on their outside shooting. Watered down NBA offensive.

Agree with most but have to say that the team is running half of an NBA style offense.

Please tell me how many NBA teams play a system where for 80% of their time of possession there is not a single player inside the 3 pt arc. That's what I find frustrating. Not as frustrating when they shoot 50% from 3, like Rutgers and last night's first half, but frustrating just the same.

I did not notice it in Rutgers game possibly because most of the shots went in. Last night it was as if the players were all wearing that collar from the Running Man movie where if they went past 3 point line their heads would explode.

almost all teams do it now. Called a 5 out offense. Dribble drive layup or kick. Revolves around court spacing and cutting. no clogging up the lane. eliminates the big on defense, no shot blocker and makes it tough to defensive rebound.
Agree. Also, what about not attacking fellow posters? I believe we all want the team to do well and are entitled to voice our opinions without being mocked!
I don't believe this to be true at all. I think some posters want the team to fail just so they can say "see, I told you so."
