Marquette, Sat. Feb. 10, Noon, YES (FOX SN) / 970AM

CA might have been as loud as I've ever heard it. We need something from the bench, Trimble is the only guy to play and gave us goose eggs in 21 minutes and was gasping for air not getting back on D. Yakwe and/or Amar would be my preference if we're only gonna play 6

The significance of these stats says everything about the Win today : Ponds /Simon 60 points. Vs Howard / Rousey 52 points . Watching Rousey and Howard play makes me think what Ponds and Lovett would put up . They both can shoot it for sure . But, they didn’t do much inside as a Team . Ponds exposed the Marquette big men, Heidt and Hauser pretty much at will , much like he did to Spellman in Nova game .

Think we'll be in the voting section after beating #4 Duke, #1 Nova and winning today?
That would be sick, a 2-11 be conf team getting votes.

Doubt it, but will still look on monday.

They're rolling now, 3 straight they could beat DePaul PAYBACK. LETS ROOL

Was not able to watch or listen to todays game so I gave my tickets to my son and grandson .Called my son to find out how we did and my 6 year old grandson answered the phone and said " poppy St. Johns won " . Its great to have such a young fan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was following along on my phone during a college tour with my son who got a kick out of my constant clicks on the box score. Great win for the guys! This puts us with realistic possibility of 6 or 7 BE wins. Can't believe DePaul smoked PC and Georgetown knocked off the Hall - they are not going to make it easy for us to climb up in the standings. Saw Nova pulled out their game with Butler and Xavier nipped Creighton. One thing that is pretty consistent with those two elite programs is they make their foul shots.

I'd be surprised if we didn't get at least a vote or two. Don't think we'll have a shot at entering the Top 25 this year since we're not playing ranked teams rest of the way, but would still be nice to get some votes.

Great game today! I keep waiting for this ride to end. Not used to winning like this. :)

One post asked if Yakwe was still injured
fwiw at game today
I spoke with an SJ medic/trainer (not sure of his exact role) who sat near me at the far end of the bench toward - just down from where Louie sits)
I asked about Yakwe
He said
“ Yakwe is not injured”

Yeah, that was me. Thanks for the info General. Very strange that Yakwe’s getting no minutes.

;) First of all, the only reason why we won this game is because Ron Linfonte's good luck tie did its magic once again.
Sure Shamorie Ponds scored 44 points but he had 8 horrible turnovers.  There is no way he is a first team Big East player with that many turnovers let alone a 2nd round NBA Draft pick.
Bashir Ahmed and Simon can't hit free throws to save their lives. We should have won by 20 points.
Trimble played slow defense and was totally ineffective on offense.  I cannot understand why Mullin didn't use Alibegovic instead as he can hit the trey and will be a 10 year Euro League player.  Shame to waste his talent!  Lavin would have used him better! A five man offense will not be enough to win the Big East tournament so I can't understand why Mullin is not working Kassoum Yakwe into the rotation.  I can see him transferring to Iona for his senior year and become All MAAC.
Carnesecca Arena was hot and crowded. When will they sell beer to quench our thirst?  The concession stand continues to be the worst in the Big East.  Getting out of the parking lot was a struggle.
Finally, what the hell was Mikey Dixon thinking by wearing his winter hoodie throughout the game?  I hope he uses better judgment when he plays next year.  Are Keita and LoVett still attending class?
If Matt Abdelmassih can't get Ja'Raan Brooks to sign his LOI, the Maven should run him out of town with a bull whip.
We already have a great recruiter on payroll to step right in and fill the void.
BTW, I never thought Shamorie Ponds would be much of a player after watching him play in high school.  As I told a few confidants who would PM me while I was sentenced to one year's probation by a mentally ill mod, this kid Slick should be a good role player for St. John’s and play maybe 10 minutes a game.

P.S. I had a great post game dinner and a whole bottle of Chianti!;)

Actually I give Mullin credit for having the wisdom to go with his best players. If either Yakwe or Alibegovic showed some basketball IQ in practices I'm sure they would getting a few minutes.

This is a joke, right?

Of course it was!;)
It was my tribute to Dr. Fun!;)
BTW, a friend of mine in the PSAL told me over 2 years ago we were getting a poor man's Isiah Thomas in Shamorie. What I realize now is that we got "Shamorie Slick Ponds" and it will be a long time before we see another guard like him imo.

With today's win, St. John's actually has a higher Ken Pom rating (72) than Providence (73). #sjubb

Totally expected that Chris took exception of Wojo touting Shamorie as a pro! And I think Chris has the kid’s best interests in mind as well. He needs to still work on things. One more year of major college hoops experience, working on his total game, and gaining strength and he should be ready. The kid is a very special player. I think our best since Chris.

Another great win. These guys are battling their way back into NIT contention which is what a lot of us thought was a reasonable outcome of this season. We went thru the gauntlet and now how an easier stretch to close out the season with 3-4 very winnable games, but the guys can't afford a let down.

Huge congrats to Ponds. He seems like a great kid and will go down as one of the most beloved SJU players if he does this for another 1-2 years. He is a really easy kid to root for. I couldn't watch yesterday, but I was at that 1990 Sealy game and Ponds must have really lit it up to pass Malik.

Sunday morning, so much rain and a quiet time to reflect - I took a few pix and a little video and here's a few subtleties I observed:

1.When the team joined raised hands at the start of the game it was Marvin Clark giving the pep speech afterwards he hugged Chris Mullin - actually they hugged each other and had broad smiles; apparent goodwill among the team & coaches;

2.Yakwe - as I posted yesterday - still a mystery to me since he is healthy, we need bodies, yet did not get off the bench (nor did Alibegoic) nevertheless he was there cheering on his teammates during the game... strange.

...such an exciting game and day - and we are (possibly that is) on the verge of finishing the season in style!
"Who could have thunk it" :D a few decent years in between)

This entire week has been cathartic - soothing the wounds of the past 2-3 decades (with a few decent years in between)
