Marquette, Sat. Feb. 10, Noon, YES (FOX SN) / 970AM

The great JPM14, basketball guru, & my SJU classmate Tony after big win! Great day!

Don't worry I'm ready to get slammed for another unpopular opinion but here we go:

This was our best game of the season!

and here is why:

a) Marq on paper is a tough match up for us. (Lots of tall guys that can stretch the floor)
b) We over came questionable refs (BA got popped in the chops and TO's 3rd and 4th were questionable at best)
c) Our guys had to be dog tired and on emotional overload (I think our it was most evident on our all arm FTs) and did
d) We were coached to attack mismatches (Simon, BA, and Clark exploiting people off the dribble)
e) I don't what the stats say, we defended the 3pt line better than we did all season.
f) Justin Simon picked up the slack when Ponds banged his hip.
g) We pulled away late.
h) Ponds is the greatest player to touch a basketball :D

3 in a row!

Some good points but I might agree with you short of the turnovers and missed free throws. Duke way tougher matchup. Their size I thought was insurmountable but Ponds LOVING every opportunity to go at Bagley was one of the best things I've ever seen.

He's been awesome but I don't get the "first round 2018" or "leaving early" talk. I know we are conditioned to believe that our guys will leave early when they shouldn't, whereas that won't happen for other teams, but what Ponds has done the past few games isn't altogether different than what two guys we played today have done at different points during the year (Rowsey and Howard). They've had some huge individual games, including Rowsey today.

Ponds is playing his way into the first round of the 2018 draft.

Not quite.

Love Ponds and not sure there is any player in division 1 playing better than him the last 2 weeks but he did have 8 turnovers today. Kid can score with the best of them but there is room for a lot of improvement in certain areas of his game. This is not meant to be a criticism in any way but rather just pointing out he may not be NBA ready.

Just got home from the game. Even though I haven’t read all the posts, I’m sure everything that needed to be said, was said. But, man, Ponds! ‘Nuff said!

I will say that in my seven years as a season ticket holder, I have never, and I mean NEVER heard CA as loud as it was today. I’m sure a lot of fans were there to see who this team is, that just beat Duke and Nova. But that’s fine with me. Just maybe we picked up a bunch of new fans today.

Way to go guys, and coaches. We are.......

I thought we did a good job making Marquette's shooters, especially Hauser, put the ball on the floor where he is clearly not as comfortable. When Owens was out of the game market was able to exploit this more by getting to to the basket without any rim protector, and even though M's shooters still made a bunch of 3's, they weren't as comfortable as they were against the Hall.

Also liked how we took advantage of matchups on the other side - posting Simon against Rousey, etc

Shamorie is just playing on another level right now. I like his killer instinct when a taller defender gets switched on him. Our 6 man rotation is working very well. I was almost sure yakwe would get some time when Owens picked his 4th. I was ok with Mullin not bringing him in though. The chemistry with the 6 is too good to mess with. Let’s keep this going!

Made a last minute decision to buy a seat off stub hub for about 15, I'm really glad I did. That was a lot of fun and Ponds was in the zone all day, especially that one stretch when he scored 13 straight points.

Agree crowd was electric today. Not bad for what some on here term the worst fans, maybe when they have something to cheer about and get excited about they will respond. Also agree on poor officiating which I almost never comment on but had a great look on a second half drive by Howard where he totally extended his arm and pushed off and we were still called for foul. Yesterday I had a post about loving to watch great players perform on the college level and today we were all treated to a tremendous performance by Shamorie who broke the St. John's scoring record for the venerable old on campus arena in both it's Alumni Hall and Carnesecca Arena incantations. Hopefully there will be some type of post season tournament play for this year's team.

Easy guys. I love SP. However, size, defense and turnovers all big ??? for the next level. Nothing he can do about size but maybe get stronger. Plenty of work on defense and turnover parts of his game. I don't remember what Rousey finished with but kid had close to 30 with Ponds guarding him on a number of occasions.
your point is taken re: his need to improve defense. But, today he mostly covered Howard and was all over him.

Great Win . As much as I like Simon , neither he nor Ahmed should have the ball when it’s a must foul situation for the opponent . Their free throw percentages are problematic in close games . I agree Clark and Ponds should only have the ball in those situations . Another poster said the same thing . Owens a 3 rd option . Simon had another big game . If he could shoot better , he’s in the NBA . Needs work on his stroke . If Richmond and Mullin can’t fix that, it’s not fixable . Shooting may be a gifted talent , not a developed talent . We’ll see next season if he improves . Still great win ! Keep it going .
It’s funny. his actual stroke looks ok. It’s the whole set up that seems out of whack. One foot in front of other and hands well in front of him. Anyway, hopefully, they help him with it.

This may be the worst reffed game of the year. Thank God they could not rob us on this one.

Knight, you stole my thunder! I was thinking about the same exact thing while watching this game. For example:
1- Phantom foul on SP when Marquette kid fell down without being touched.
2- First half, Marvin Clark is pushed out of bounds on the baseline, calls Clark out of bounds
3- Marquette player falls down with SJU in possession, Ref blows play dead. Player safety was not an issue. Player doesn't even leave game??? Free time-out?
4- Multiple off the ball fouls for screens impacting nothing.
I could go on, but yes it was really bad.

Anyway, congrats to Shamorie tremendous offensive effort.

sjc88-I would have typed all that but my fingers got tongue-tied. ;)

I can't stop. It was that bad. Marquette player chicken wings Bashir in the chops. Foul on Bashir! Even BA laughed at that call. I get there are missed calls and bad calls in every game but today was comically bad. Both coaches showed tremendous restraint.

How about the push offs by Howard and Rowsey as they drove to the basket.
And Howard’s running starts before even putting ball on floor.

Thing that separates Shamorie from a lot of elite scorers is his ability to score in every way imaginable. And his ability to score against big men.
Love this kid.

As quiet as he is, he really is taking a leadership role.

Simon has an ugly release as does Ahmed. FT's are all about rotation and arch, they both have neither. Nonetheless, loving the way they are getting big W's right now!

One post asked if Yakwe was still injured
fwiw at game today
I spoke with an SJ medic/trainer (not sure of his exact role) who sat near me at the far end of the bench toward - just down from where Louie sits)
I asked about Yakwe
He said
“ Yakwe is not injured”

Simon is only a soph. Time to develop his shot. If he does ,IMO he will be NBA bound . Great at everything else. Defends well, gets his share of assists and rebounds and has a nice inside game.

I remember HS coach who told me aim and arc to hit the back of the front of the rim for success.

I was concerned about Trimble's lack of quickness today. Glad it did not cause a problem.

Real good win today and two of the main topics are about a guy who didn’t,0’t play and the refereeing. Sheesh, look at the last play of the Xavier-Creighton game to see bad reffing. Marquette shot 6, count ‘em, 6 foul shots other that Rousey’s 2 fouls on the 3’s. Yeah there were bad calls, there always are, just part of the game.

We played well enough today to beat Marquette-and the refs.

Saw that end of the X-Creighton game. That was horrible. No team should lose a game like that.

On a different note, Steve Lappas called Ponds the best player in the country right now. I hated Lappas when he was announcing our game against Nova. Now I think he’s brilliant, ;)
