Marquette Game

I just got back from the Garden. Very happy we won. I thought Dom was magnificent. His rebounding, assists, shot blocking and his shut down defense on Carlino was the difference tonight.

That said I thought Lavin coached one of his worst games in his run here. He just didn't seem to have his pulse on the game at all. His use of his bench and lack of substitutions were awful. First and foremost D'Angelo while incredibly courageous and full of heart (for being out there while hurt) was clearly so injured that he was our weakest link tonight. How he wound up playing 35 minutes when Branch played just 13 minutes was foolhardy and could have cost us the game. We played our best ball when D'Angelo was out of the game. During the four minute stretch he sat out we went from being down 43-38 to up 48-46. That 10 to 3 run was critical to our victory. This was so obvious to me and everybody sitting around me. I don't know what game our coach was watching and why it took him so long to get that lineup on the floor.

Additionally D'Angelo was unable to guard Carlino because D'Lo was so hurt and the switch to Dom defensively happened way too late.

Lastly I did not think the foul on Carlino with 11 seconds left made sense. Why give up two points there? Why give Pointer a fourth foul(that could have doomed us if the game went to OT). In the end they still wound up putting up a potential tying three at the buzzer anyway.

On another note. We are going to struggle if Harrison does not get better soon. Tonight was an opportunity to rest him a bit instead of letting him play thirty five minutes when playing Branch much more made total sense. Lavin's use of his bench tonight was hard to fathom at all.

Anyway I was thrilled we won and on to Duke. Hopefully we will open up our bench a bit more and not put so much pressure on our star when he is so banged up that he is limping on the court.

Neither Lavin nor his assistant coaches seem to know how to use their bench but should not surprise any of us. D'Lo is not a good defender and should not have been on Carlino to begin with but the only reason this game was close was Harrison's shot selection. I thought I was having Deja vu to his sophomore year!

By the way just in case anybody thought this issue was dead:
Coach was back to looking like a cross betweven a club bouncer and a priest (minus the collar).

Since we need a little help from above he went with the Father Maher look. They actually could be brothers they look so close. I didn't mind it personally

Where were you tonight mike?
Paultz said you were "sick"...

Have the flu real bad. thought it was a cold but got a lot worse last night and went to Dr today when my temp went to almost 101

Jordan had a good game
38minutes, 4boards, 2stls, 3assists, 15pnts, and only 3 turnovers

Not the MVP though

Dom
39mins, 12boards, 6assists, 2stls, 6blocks, 15pnts, and only 2 t.o.

We win tonight. Strong feeling. Bet on it.

I love being right. Great game. Old time Redmen playing well when it counts.

Pointer reminded everyone why they were drooling over him earlier in the season. SirSwat.

Jordan threw an amazing thread the needle pass leading Pointer for a HUGE bucket. Played a really tight game - which he didn't look capable of this year.

Amar picked up 4 first half fouls when Lavin couldn't yank him fast enough after three, but he kept CO off the floor long enough to go into the 2nd half with 0 fouls. HUGE

Switching Pointer onto Carlino, who got locked up like the school bully getting silenced by a bigger, tougher kid. Two or three possessions after Dom took over, Carlino launched a 3 from about 30+ feet. When I played in some rough schoolyards against black kids, if you took a shot like that, backing off from inside play, they'd taunt you with "He's scared." And he looked it.

Greene hit some big shots, including the shades-of-John-Starks in your face in your traffic slam in the second half. Get that man a cape.

Nice win. Smaller crowd, but plenty of kids, and plenty of noise.

Saw my seat buddy Chris (the lurker) from New Hyde Park and his lovely girlfriend Roxanna (sp?) He told me he agrees with 90% of my posts, but not about Lavin. So Chris is wrong 10% of the time.

Met MUSE from redmen.com - nice guy. He told me he agrees with 50% of my posts, which makes him wrong 50% of the time. Respect the dude. He told me he beat Tony Jackson one on one, and that Tony Jackson was better than Connie Hawkins. Ok, you're right - he's a little crazed.

Just so you know, the Taco Bell near St. John's doesn't give you a free chalupa when your temperature breaks 100.

To paraphrase Robin Williams, a sore throat is God's way of telling you that you eat too damned much. :) Feel better and don't spread the flu down Franklin Avenue, at least not south of 7th street. If misery loves company I have a sore throat from yelling so much today - it's a good sign - in the glory days I'd come home with a sore throat after every game.

Excellent point on defending Carlino. Once Pointer took him, he only had one additional field goal I believe. He was having his way with Dee & Lav should have made move sooner. Ugly win, but our first one at home.

Lavin's bench consists of Branch and Alibegovic. Once AA picked up his 4th foul. There really weren't any sub decisions to make.

Linda Lovelace had the same problem!

The way Carlino smoked open threes it was a good call to foul him, risking two points to prevent a three that could have tied the game. Good call.

During our run to an 11-1 record Lav was occasionally utilizing Stewart and JDR. Christian Jones (who some thought may be a fill in for Sampson) apparently has been written off. Then again our wizard could use all three in the Duke game. We are........

You think any of those moves would have resulted in a bigger victory? Better chance that they might have resulted in a loss. We won. I'm satisfied with things just the way they worked out.

Here are some of my observations

1. Marquette was an annoying ass team. Wojo is one annoying ass coach too. Running around and screaming and slapping the scorers table. The way he angrily motored down the hand shake line after the loss. Carlino was annoying too. Dancing around the court after hitting 3s. He's lucky he kept getting open. Finally Lav decided to put a two legged defender on him, so that helped. Pointer demolished him.

2. Sir Dom and Rysheed, were so damn good tonight. Guess what? That's 3 straight good games from Jordan. 3. He's getting there. Dom was incredible, but It was bittersweet because I was watching the game thinking, damn, he coulda done this easily against DePaul too. He should've played like that against DePaul. But what's done is done, he was huge tonight, and came up big when it mattered. Rysheed hit 2 clutch 3s tonight, a clutch and one, and also made an amazing pass to Dom. He's playing within the team, and I have this feeling he goes off against duke.

3. DLo, I don't know how hurt you were, but you shouldn't have played 35 minutes. Branch had a great game, really stepped up, and didn't get enough time. Stewart should've been put in with all the open 3s we were getting. DLo was overused and he should be getting rest.

4. Was an ugly game but glad to win, keep moving up. After what I watched tonight I don't know how we beat duke. But that's why they play the game. We have to play like we did in the first half and change against nova, with sheed playing better and also no sir Dom foul trouble.

It's ok if we lose to duke though, I'm focused on getting to 4-4 in BE play and moving forward from there.

We should meet for drinks, Beast. I can tell you about the times I dunked over Lew Alcindor in high school, and how I beat Walter Berry in a one-on-one at then-Alumni Hall in 1985, despite my being 20 years older and 10 inches shorter. B)
