Marquette game

Moving forward, Obekpa must develop some semblance of an offensive game during the summer
He must be able to demonstrate that he is at least a threat to score down low next year

While a loss in the books, this team won me over today. Obekpa played an outstanding game giving us a glimpse of the defensive force he is capeable of being. Phil played a good game as well only this time his shots were dropping. Jamal has shown himself to be a most adequite leader of the future. I do think the refs missed the push off on Vander what's his face when he drove on Obekpa that probably cost us the game.

The only negative to me was when the camera scanned to DLo in the stands and when we tied the game, to put it in overtime, DLo sat stoically showing no emotion at all. Guess he was not too thrilled that the team did that well without him. Not surprised.

Congrats to the team for playing, what the TV announcers said was one of the hardest payed game they have seen in a long time.

First he shows too much emotion. Now he shows none. Damned if you do, damned if you don't :)

Might not mean anything but Pointer was in a shirt and jacket while DLO was in street clothes. Dont think that represents us very well. If he is making it out to games, i doubt he is thinking of leaving.

Great effort after the ND loss and will watch again tonight on television but the last few minutes and O/T gave me palpitations. To think this game was two missed layups away from a win pisses me off. While there I could swear we passed the ball to a Marquette player at least 3 times and Phil's lazy intercepted pass to Jamal on a breakaway was a killer but somehow our guys made a comeback and that was admirable.
Again some Lavin substiutions left me bewildered and he put in a walk on whose name I can't spell for some reason but luckily Branch was reinserted at the right moment and Chris more than held his own. Not disappointed at all since we played without two starters and a guy named Sanchez on the bench. Just not an NCAA year for us. I am confident we will beat Providence and if we win 2 in the BET at least we will play a game or two in the NIT.
I feel for Lavin since he looked like he was coaching his heart out but the basketball Gods were not on our side today.

EDIT: We now play Villanova at 7pm ....... Not an easy game but still winnable.

Don't you love when people draw an opinion on someone based on a few seconds of TV camera on the guy. He showed up to suppport his teammates - that's enough for me.

The only one who seemed to truly give up was the OP. That was even before tip-off. He predicted 10 point halves.[/quote]

wrong. i didnt predict anything. i said i had a bad feeling about this game. we played a lot better than i thought we would, did i break your chops when your stroking the team and the players all year predicting how great their going to be and what seed they will be in the ncaa's?

Very tough loss.. Didn't understand Lavin not playing Bourgault at all in OT, despite his hitting the game tying 3 in regulation.. Truly Marco had a poor shooting day. Greene has had more than his share too. today he shot well but, committed some critical turnovers.

i still wonder why Greene runs the offense with that incessant dribble when Branch is in the game to run the point? i think it was Balamou who got beat to the hole on the final basket.. Buzz knew where to go at the end of the game and Blue delivered

It was a great, great comeback but, it wasn't to be. When Marquette made their run to get up by 11, I think, our ZONE gave up the 3 pt elbow jumper almost every time.. We did better man to man, except for the last basket..

i think Phil Greene can thrive when he is delivered the ball in ready position. Branch does that for him as we saw in this game. When Greene tries to take the offense into his own hands as opposed to letting the game come to him, it's usually a struggle. We'll be fine next year.

btw: i love Obekpa's energy. he seems to have a great demeanor about basketball and games

Marco doesn't deserve to be killed here today.. He's a shooter and many of his shots were dead on but, hit the front rim.. The Garden can be a tough shooting arena, especially since he had so little playing time there this year..

Actually, Marco , other than a bad shooting day, did not play a bad game at all.He hit a big 3 to tie the game in regulation from the corner.

Other than that, Mrs, Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

Marco is in there to shoot. When a shooter goes 3-for-13, 2-of-11 on threes in 27 minutes, that's kind of a bad game. Yes he hit a huge three at the end. If he had made one more SJU wins.

VERY disappointing loss. This game was winnable. 2 reasons for the loss (there are more than 2, but these are the top 2):

5 for 13
3 for 13

I am having a hard time understanding the Marco sycophants who seem to think would have been the answer late. If anything, Jones earned to play more down the stretch today, and his offensive energy would have possibly made a difference. Marco has shown over the last 4 or 5 games that he is not that great shooter we hoped he would be. He had plenty of open looks and missed most of them. Failed to step up, time to move on.

Other thoughts:

1. Branch still not back to form; need him to be more productive on offense. Think he'll be good next year. Also want to see some take charge leadership from him.
2. Boarding still a weakness, though CO has improved. Early in 2nd half, Marquette got too many second and third (and a few fourth) tries.
3. Chris O will be a beast with another year or 2 under his belt. I think his offensive game will improve dramatically, and hopefully his foul shooting. But, on defense, I don't recall many other college players with the game-changeability he has, certainly not at St. John's. Should be real good for us at least another 2 years. (Think poor man's Okefor)
4. Seems like the staff's decision to give Jones almost no burn all year may have been a miscalculation, as he showed today that he can contribute, especially on offense, where this team is really challenged. Lavin said as much in his interviews this week. Today, it showed that the kid can contribute if given the opportunity (as opposed to Marco). Will be interesting to see if he sticks around or if he looks to transfer, but I think he could develop into a very productive role player. Maybe more upside than Garrett.
5. Greene showed the haters that he has some game, and that he can be good. He needs to be more consistent, dribble less, etc. but I think he will be a very good player for 4 years. Has to be consistent offensively. Other than Hill, hardy and DLo, maybe the most talented guard here in the past 10 years.

All in all, this game was a microcosm of the season. Streaky play, very athletic talent, poor shooting and FT shooting, too many turnovers due to sloppy passes, inconsistent effort at the beginning of a half. Hopefully, many of these are maturity related, and that next year, they will be improved and more disciplined. It is hard to surmise of what would have happened today with our 2 banished players, but it is not a leap to say that this could have been in the W column, almost guaranteeing an NIT bid. Now, we still have to sweat it.

This game hurt.

Gritty effort by the kids and they didn't give up.

Jones was impressive. Branch had a couple of passes that wowed me. I swear he throws the fastest passes I ever really remember a Johnnie making the past 20 years.

Symmetery. We began BE play taking a "superior" opponent into OT but ultimately lost. 17 games later we ended the BE season the same way.

Two tough losses.

In between was a rollercoaster that few could have predicted.

A win or two in the BE Tourney would be great; as would a couple of wins in the NIT.

I still believe that despite some setbacks we are trending in the right direction overall.

Wow I really enjoyed today's game. The guys played their hearts out. Actually I was not looking forward to going today and thought we were not likely to be competitive without Dom and DLo. Then after a pretty good first half I thought it had gotten away from us at the start of the second half before we made an unexpected run. Then again I thought we were done down ten with under 3 minutes to go. However we clawed and scrapped and played with fire and got it to OT.

Applause all around here. Despite the fact that we shot 38% from the line, 12% from three, 41%, from the floor and got out-rebounded by 7 we took the #15 in the country to OT without two of our key players. That was inspiring to watch.

Obekpa was a force, Jones kept us in the game when it looked like Marquette was going to blow us out, Greene made a bunch of big shots, Branch showed great leadership, Jakaar played another very good game and the Garden was uplifted during the final minutes of regulation and throughout overtime.

I really wanted the team to get to five hundred in conference and it is always disappointing to lose at the buzzer, but today was really fun and a great experience. Again Kudos to the team. If we bring it like this in the Big East tourney we will do ourselves proud.

Moral victories dont count. This team played tough and it was nice to see that but guess what they still put up another L

Wrong! You said, you could picture the team replicating 10 points in a half. That is basically predicting they would do so.

Show me where I stroked the team ALL YEAR predicting an NCAA bid. You can't do so. I only predicted an NCAA bid before the season started. That was it.

Get your facts straight.

His clothing choices don't represent us well????
When will it end?

I'm a big supporter of Marco. I think he is fundamentally sound, and his shot selection is generally good. He did a three from deep on the right side of the key in the first half, about 25-27 feet, which was short. He plays hard on defense, boxes out, and is in position to rebound. He handles the ball well at his size, and passes well also. He also puts the ball on the ball and can drive to the hoop or penetrate and dish. I will say that he has shot poorly this year overall in limited action. I would agree that if he is not shooting well, he can't be in there, but shooting poorly and playing poorly are two different things.

If the way he has shot this year is the best he is capable of, there isn't much future for him. However, I get the feeling that if he gets the playing time, we will see a game where he nails 6 or 7 threes.
