March Madness
Heresy here to many, but Seton Hall always brings it. Give me an overachieving team over “best talent in BE” squad” every time.
Not heresy. Tough blue-collar kids, gritty and passionate coach, consistent effort. I hate to say it but our team has an issue getting motivated and concentrating on details. It comes down to the coach. You play the way you are coached. Consistent teams like Gonzaga under Mark Few, play the same way every year. Different talent.

Willard knows how to coach and has good relationship with his team and his expectations. They are always tough under Willard much like the kids are under Cooley. Our recruiting is also all over the place with patchwork. Too many guys worried about their future paychecks instead of consistent focus on “team”. It’s why I love Figueroa. Kid has old man game and always gives effort like the Hall team does. Consistent...

I root for SH (didn’t always)...like Willard and their kids going back to the last class...Willard never bad mouths us going back to the Lavin days. His kids play hard all the time.

And, said this before, the kid Gill is not bad at all. Agile around basket especially for 7’2”

We talk about getting big name recruits but the Halls no name freshman recruits of Sandro, Nelson and Rhodes could play for us any day of the week. As a matter of fact if we had Sandro you could tack a few more wins on to our total. Very impressed with their kids.

I have a semi-soft spot for Seton Hall. Followed them as a 2nd local since early 90's when it was Dehere, Arturas Karnishovas, Hurley

If we had those 3 kids, 2 of them would transfer out...

Yahoo has us as one of the last 4 byes. Then 4 others as last 4 in. I don't know what's going on anymore. I just want our name called.

The more watch all of these games, the more I realize. We have great talent but it's not a great fit together as a unit. I'm watching teams with less talent who play together well and play hard get better results than us. Look, I love our kids, but they're constantly looking disjointed as a team.

I think the key in the future is just having the right kids to fit our system.

I know we want Buffalo to win, but wouldn’t having Bowling Green win help us out to? Didn’t we beat them this year?

Having a conference champion on your resume as a win couldn’t hurt.

Normally that would be the case, but most pundits have us as the last 4 in, so Bowling Green could end up stealing our spot.

Buffalo a very well-coached team. Disciplined and patient, with good court cohesion also.
Bowling Green is making it a game though.
This may be the final day of relevant bubble games. Hopefully.

Who to root FOR/against on Saturday:
*AUBURN over Florida- Florida is the 2nd #11 seed.
*HOUSTON over Memphis- we want Houston so the AAC doesn't have a bid thief (AAC Semis).
*MICHIGAN over Minnesota- Minnesota is the 3rd #10 seed.
*CINCINNATI over Wichita St- we want Cincinnati so the AAC doesn't have a bid thief (AAC Semis).
*UTAH ST over San Diego St- we want Utah St so the MW doesn't have a bid thief (MW Finals).
*VILLANOVA over Seton Hall- we want Nova to remain a Q1 win. Currently their NET is #25 and needs to stay top 30.
*BUFFALO over Bowling Green- we want Buffalo so the MAC doesn't have a bid thief (MAC Finals).
*WASHINGTON over Oregon- we want UW so the Pac 12 doesn't have a bid thief (PAC 12 Finals).

7/7 so far, with just 1 game left. Awesome finish!

The problem is that we really don't have a system. On offense, we freelance most of the time and rarely run set plays. On defense, we switch rather than fight over screens so we frequently create match ups that are unfavorable to us and result in easy baskets for our opponents.

We look disjointed because our kids are not well coached. It has been said a million times on this site that a strong X and O guy is needed to teach and drill solid strategies on offense and defense. Yet things never change.

Our new A.D. needs to demand changes in our program during the off season. If Coach Mullin is receptive, I would be happy to see him return. If he resists, the A.D. needs to strongly consider making a change in the leadership of the program. If the A.D. allows things to remain status quo, his stock will plummet in my eyes.

1. I respectfully disagree with your belief that St. John’s does not have a ”system” (your term). The St. John’s offensive sets and defense are similar to those run by NBA teams. I agree with you that Mullin’s NBA philosophies have not been successful, but I believe it is mistaken to say that Mullin has not incorporated a “system”.

2. Mike Cragg’s Job is not as simple as it may seem. By every account I have seen Mullin’s contract has more than $4M remaining to be paid. Given StJohn’s financial limitations I will be surprised if StJohn’s bellies up by paying Mullin $4M+ plus and an additional $2M+ plus a salary for the new coach plus a possible “buyout” for the new coach. Like it or not there are financial realities and I was advised by a StJohn’s Board member that no big time financial booster is on the horizon.

Have we confirmed that his entire contract is guaranteed as opposed to having a buyout? Have we even confirmed what his current contract is?

Don't forget the salaries owed to the assistant coaches and staff.
