Loyola (Maryland), Tue. Nov. 6, 6:30p, FSN / 570 WMCA

Did what they needed...

I was checking live score play by play while at work dinner and listened to some live audio....and saw highlights Paul just posted.

Ponds was 2-7 from 3, and one was the halftime buzzer bank shot that could just as easily missed.

How were the other looks he took on the 1 of 6 ?

I did not have an opportunity to watch tonights game.

What defense did we play? zone, or man to man ?

Did we press at all ?

Did we push the pall and run on offense ?

Thanks.
Coaches like Wright, McDermott, etc. will have our centers fouling out after 5 minutes into the game.
Ref job...some phantom fouls there...especially against Keita who defended well. No one's complaining because the result of the game was never in doubt.

If we didn’t play the 7 to 11 guys with a big lead, the complaints would justifiably be that the coaches blew an opportunity to give them some needed experience in a sure win game.
So now the complaint is the team looked sloppy and didnt blow away the opposition by 40, even though backups were getting a substantial part of the action. And they were mostly playing with at least 3 guards on the floor, only one a starter.
Yes it was sloppy but so is every game when a 30 point lead becomes a scramble among scrubs and first year hopefuls.
Take the win and the playing time distribution as a welcome start.

Otis, we played man to man all game
Token pressure in the backcourt - game well in control - didn't need to go for steals
We pushed the ball and ran quite a bit on offense
That will be the strength of this team - speed, movement and unselfish passing of the ball
We won't be as good when we have to run a half court offense
Played aggressive defense but committed way too many silly fouls (especially Clark & Keita)
This will be a fun group to watch - tremendous athleticism, speed and quickness on the court
Next game -Friday night vs Bowling Green on FS2
GO JOHNNIES!!
End this game by haldtime 46-23, first 5minutes of 2nd half outscore them by by 8 to go up by 31.
Then the subs +walkons come on.
SJU win by 20.
I predicted this game.
was 48-23 at halftime, got it up to 33 early in 2nd half, lost a little focus and won by 21

Trimble is just not quick enough at this level.

Nothing to complain about tonight. Heron looked as good as advertised. Obviously there is still room for improvement, which is expected this early in the season. We all knew going in that lack of depth at the 4 and 5 may be a problem down the road. Good news is that Heron, Figgy and Simon all are above average rebounders for their size.

We handily beat a mediocre basketball team. My initial takeaway was how impressed I was with Dixon. Smooth, under control, has range, bucket getter. Lets get the next W Friday.

Only thing that matters for margin of victory is getting 10+ (for NET), which we did.

Happy with the results tonight. Entire Big East won by 10+, as well. Perfect day.

Loved seeing Heron and Fig finally play. Can't wait for the next game.

Nothing to be concerned about tonight they lightened up and played the bench the majority of the second half and didn’t try to run the score up. No need to risk injury to key players in a game whose outcome was well decided. I ageee on the posts about Trimble he doesn’t bring much to the table I think as the year goes on Williams will start to take his minutes. Keita has to stay out of foul trouble although as pointed out a lot of the fouls were Phantom calls these refs were terrible tonight. Great to see Herons debut he looked great and Figgy just seems to give it his all the entire time he’s out there he’s gonna be amazing to watch this year.

Have to admit I've been skeptical about how much Dixon, coming from a mid-major, would contribute to this team, but I was very impressed with what he showed tonight.

@John_Fanta

It’s what you do when no one’s watching...

Even after a @StJohnsBBall season opener win, @Marv_Time13 was grinding away with extra shots after the game. This is leadership personified. #SJUBB #BIGEASThoops

Some takeaways after finally watching a game that counted l, most of which we already know:
- we will be as athletic and quick as any team we play
- ponds / heron / LJ will form quite and offensive trio... we should have plenty of open looks with their ability to get to the rim...just need to find players to hit the 3 (issue)
- we will get owned by skilled big men down low (wasn’t a fan of two Loyola players attempting to back down Keita with moderate success, just lacking the skill to finish ) not sure how they address that
- not sure if my bar is that low for our half court offense, but I swear I saw a couple attempts at back door cuts, it generally looked like they were attempting set plays.
- happy to see Williams get time that mattered, his defense will be welcomed
- Roberts ....raw...glad he got in with a fair amount of time left...but don’t expect anything other than a couple rebounds.
- after being asked to do so much last year, Clark and Simon will take some time to adjust to their new roles- each still critical to our success

Now moving on to an absolute Force...given that we play them, watching the duke game the same night as ours...man I am excited for that game. Their 3 studs are surrounded by players that know exactly where to be for rebounds and loose balls. Feel like that game thread should be started soon lol. Barrett can get what he wants when he wants, Zion- absolutely more than a dunker, reddish- so smooth. That team is special.

Sorry for looking ahead...but Bowling green just doesn’t excite me lol
