Loyola (Maryland), Tue. Nov. 6, 6:30p, FSN / 570 WMCA

Good effort tonight. Heron looks as good as advertised. He is a really good player. Shoots well, handles well and rebounds well. Man, I like his game. This team is going to have some great offensive nights when everything is clicking and shots are falling. I believe there is a great deal of untapped upside. On to Friday.
They go up 33 at start of 2nd half and they start playing stupid ball. Maybe I’ve watched a little to much Bama football the past few years, but once Bama puts a game out of reach, Saban has his kids play to start preparing for the next game. That’s how championship teams are built. We are so far superior to this Loyola team. I’m not saying we should have run up the score(they may outscore us in the 2nd half), but we should have played fundamentally sound ball after we went up big. We didn’t.
I agree Monte. IMO played a lot of selfish ball and attempts at highlight reel basketball in 2nd half. Some guys looked intent on padding their own stats, others to make spectacular passes or dunks. It got ragged. Outcome never in doubt, as we were physically and athletically superior. But lots of sloppy play, regardless as to what the scoreboard said.
Some takeaways after finally watching a game that counted l, most of which we already know:
- we will be as athletic and quick as any team we play
- ponds / heron / LJ will form quite and offensive trio... we should have plenty of open looks with their ability to get to the rim...just need to find players to hit the 3 (issue)
- we will get owned by skilled big men down low (wasn’t a fan of two Loyola players attempting to back down Keita with moderate success, just lacking the skill to finish ) not sure how they address that
- not sure if my bar is that low for our half court offense, but I swear I saw a couple attempts at back door cuts, it generally looked like they were attempting set plays.
- happy to see Williams get time that mattered, his defense will be welcomed
- Roberts ....raw...glad he got in with a fair amount of time left...but don’t expect anything other than a couple rebounds.
- after being asked to do so much last year, Clark and Simon will take some time to adjust to their new roles- each still critical to our success

Now moving on to an absolute Force...given that we play them, watching the duke game the same night as ours...man I am excited for that game. Their 3 studs are surrounded by players that know exactly where to be for rebounds and loose balls. Feel like that game thread should be started soon lol. Barrett can get what he wants when he wants, Zion- absolutely more than a dunker, reddish- so smooth. That team is special.

Sorry for looking ahead...but Bowling green just doesn’t excite me lol
I honestly think we are gonna be a massive problem for them. Win or lose will maybe be the best college basketball game of the season. Duke is always more polished early season than we are but we have the athletes and depth to match. RJ Barrett was excellent, but Simon and Figueroa are studs, and Figueroa I think is going to explode really fast. Duke doesn’t play big either and they have no match for Ponds. Reddish and Barrett vs Simon and Heron? Crazy matchups... Zion is a monster, but Clark can take him outside and matches his strength if not his athleticism. I too am excited for that one. I think we match their athletes and have depth. They also play small...

Was at the game...here's my list

Pros:

*Great shooting in 1st half

*Nice passing and cutting

*Great FT shooting all game

*LJ has been a human highlight reel and we still haven't seen him put it all together (on Sportscenter like 3x now)

*Heron looked GREAT...quickly put to bed any fear over concussion symptoms. Not only drove effectively with great control but also hit some nice jumpers. Heron and Ponds will be a handful for everyone this year.

*Dixon was hitting his open 3's and showed some nice flashes out there...great to see

*Ponds played well despite still having some issues with 3's

*Clark looked good as usual

Cons:

*It seemed there was a "foul" every 5 seconds and the game could never really get in a flow because of it. Many fans in my section complained as well. Either way though we committed WAY too many fouls. I believe they got something like 32 FT attempts. This probably would have been a 40 pt win had we not fouled them every 5 secs.

*3 pointers stopped falling in the 2nd half. Must be more consistent.

*Simon looked a bit lost out there. Missed several bunnies and just never really got into a rhythm.

*Keita is likely going to get destroyed by real bigs but he's all we have so...

Overall great game tonight and it certainly gives me hope we just didn't really care about the exhibition and scrimmage. Only one game but we looked good early when it mattered. We took our foot off the gas in the 2nd. Nice to see Lou at the game and also saw Val Ackerman and Stu Jackson. Spoke to Cragg and enjoyed the 1870 court for a few hours before the game. He seems to be about 6'5-6'6 by the way I was surprised! Cragg said he is well aware that our basketball program is what drives our school and he is determined to get it back where it belongs. He's still feeling things out and sometimes he may just silently observe different things around campus and how they can be run more efficiently, more successfully, etc. He seemed disappointed with the lack of many fans at 1870 court, however he caught himself and said "I get it though...we have to win first". Hands down the hardest worker I've seen in the athletic department in...ever and very professional but also will not shy away from fans in person.

We win and have a game plan that fans buy into and 1870 will have a velvet rope... Cragg has a hard job ahead but honestly he’s our best hope at turning this thing around. It doesn’t hurt we have a really good team and lots of talent this year. Hopefully more people start making it out to the 1870’s stuff, and I think he will be happy with the attendance in Manhattan..

Clark's stat line seems surprising and underwhelming.

For those who saw game, what was your take ?

Great first win. Heron and LJ are the basketball equivalent of duck tape and we have ourselves two brand new rolls. They fix most of our issues and plug a bunch of holes. Rebound, defend, pass, bring the ball up, athletic, long, strong, and SCORE.

Ponds looked like Ponds. Dixon is quick as hell with the ball and seems like he has good body control at the rim. Kinda slow release but he can shoot for sure. 20 minutes of energy and looking to score is what we need from him off the bench.

Clark to me is too valuable to have him try to guard around the perimeter like Ponds, Simon, Heron, and LJ can. To me, he should let their center catch the ball 25 feet from the hoop instead of hanging on him and picking up cheap fouls. His offense will be steady all year but I hope he starts to establish himself at the rim early in games.

Simon is the prototypical elite role player. I think it will take him some time to fit in with this group and the abundance of wing scorers but once he does his impact will be tremendous. Rebound, defend, distribute, attack the rim.

Keita gets a redo for me, never got a chance to get going.

Don’t love Trimble but if he can buy in to 15 minutes a night, playing tough defense and taking good shots than he can have a solid role. I want to see Williams get a chance to get comfortable. Think Roberts will be a keeper who might struggle early.

Heron, LJ, Simon, Ponds will be stealing rebounds from him all year. Just keep their Big off the boards. Offensively think he’ll need to adjust a little bit with the additional scorers we have but not worried about him.

Good sign to see Simon hit both his FTs to start the season. That was his biggest weakness last season. I think part of what we are seeing as "sloppy" is maybe his assigned role to slash and go at the basket. If he can draw a lot of attention/fouls and then hit FTs that opens up some things for the rest of the offense.

Agree Paul. I am not worried about Simon except that whatever his redefined role is I hope he is happy with it. I want him back next year (would be our biggest 2019 recruiting coup imho).

overall good game, defeating a bad team by double digits which was expected. only concern last night was Keita's play.

Simon's release on his jumper looked better, a lot better... his legs, on this jumpers, seem to go every which-way and it looks odd.. but it's a only a small sample set - so we'll see. But i was pleased with his release - it's better, seemingly.

Good first game vs Loyola. Ponds was Ponds, Clark was Clark and Simon struggled early but, did the necessary . As for the Newbies, LJ will be a tough handle for any defender in the BE . Dixon will be a contributor when it’s time to give Ponds, Heron a blow . Heron is going to give BE Teams fits on both ends of the Court . He is a big Guard who can play physical or finesse . Keita has some foul trouble and also wasn’t needed to do much as the Small Lineup was so active , no matter what Personnel were playing at the time . Clark seemed comfortable on Defense playing inside when the Small Lineup was on the Court . His shot wasn’t falling but, he did go to the hoop with intensity . In defense of Keita , he is Athletic and will find his role . The Rookies got some time in the last minutes and looked like Rookies but, more importantly they played . Which allowed the Greyhounds to cut the deficit and outscore us in the Second half . The game was long over by then and few teams look good coasting to a blow out .

Simon hit a few nice mid range jumpers that he wouldn't have made last year. Nothing but net. Seems to be getting a better feel of his shot. I love Simon but for the life of me, I can't think of another player who missed so many bunnies at the rim. He does all the hard work getting to the rim but has a tough time finishing unless it's a dunk. Needs to work on better touch. It seemed like a few times he missed a floater, got the rebound and missed again right at the rim which was frustrating but he will be fine.

Clark was out on the court literally like 5 minutes after the game ended and putting up shots. Gave some fans high fives and went to work. Great kid and great leader. When I saw the boxscore I realized he didn't have a great game but he will be fine too because he works too hard. Heron was buttery smooth making both 3's and when he gets to the rim he is extremely balanced and under control. He is also a very good finisher. LJ was pumped as usual and very active...the kid is clearly hungry and there were a few guys who I think might be family or friends of his near my seat which was fun. Every time he went airborne we all got up waiting for an SCTop10 play and we got some! For those who didn't know he was #6 on SC and SC also posted his dunk on Twitter which is awesome. Ever since the Duke and Nova wins, ESPN has been showing us a lot more love.

in re prior posts, I just hope the new AD and out HC find harmony and work together and then = success!
If not, oh well.
But there is a lot of promise and Cragg might be more valuable in the long run than any one recruit.

My 5 takeaways that will need to be addressed-

1. We really have no low presence. We knew this and Keita will be an issue if he gets into foul trouble and he will because its college basketball and refs are paid by how many fouls they call.

2. Way too many turnovers against a team like that. Went into very sloppy stretches.

3. Speaking of stretches too many of them where we don't score. I think we were on 60 points for like 6-8 minutes there in the 2nd half. Unfortunately there was nobody to come in and provide injection by that point due to players fouling out and lack of depth.

4. Yes lack of depth. The freshman looked like freshman and to beat the dead horse all the more reason I wish they got a little burn in exhibition game. Williams hit his first shot then it was helter skelter.

5. Settling for the 3 way too much. Ball movement is good when it's in and out. But far too often its around the perimeter and the hoisting a 3 without looking for a higher percentage shot.

My one surprise which makes me feel good for next season is Mikey Dixon. When the backcourt will take a hit after this year I was impressed with his game and feel good about handing him the keys next season.

The fouls were insane. Many were justified but several just seemed like refs trying to make their presence known. Tough to watch. At one point we were on pace for about 100 points. But we did let up, so hopefully that's why.
Only thing that matters for margin of victory is getting 10+ (for NET), which we did.

Happy with the results tonight. Entire Big East won by 10+, as well. Perfect day.

Loved seeing Heron and Fig finally play. Can't wait for the next game.
Can some explain how this works? In what games do we have to win by 10+?

Good post moose. To your first point, for starters I’m not writing off Keita yet, don’t think he’ll be a go to guy down there by any means but some dump offs, put backs and the occasional post up should help. More importantly, I think we will post up our guards routinely. Out of Heron, Simon, and ponds all three can post up and one of them more than likely will have a size mismatch to exploit.
