Lovett

So , what you are saying,he doesn't play this yr because he may be re-injure his knee and end his career. So he will go play somewhere where he gets pd and perhaps his contract would keep him getting pd should he and likely get hurt again. Why would any pro teams risk this .Maybe if he had Michael Jordan talent

I think that LoVett and his family believe, this is the best path forward 'for him' to achieve his dreams. Sure, you can get re-injured--but better to get hurt doing well and proving your worth in a pro league than being unproven to pro analysts and coming up lame going for glory in college.
Hey, I don't like it, but this is the mindset of the players today. And i can't blame them for thinking this way. The players have changed and so has the game. They're 'in college' for one thing--to prove their 'worth' for the 'next' level on the court--not to be a 'student/athlete'--and an injury changes the player's calculus.
Should he heal and return and go for glory in college? Or given his particular situation, should he heal, train, and prepare for the 'next level'?

i believe SJU's spring semester starts 17 january.
is there anyone not attending class that would interest SJU basketball fans?

Chicago Days I agree that, assuming Marcus and his team have decided playing overseas is his pro future, it is a tough choice on whether to pack it in and heal or try to come back and play. I also agree that it is a decision that was his to make and I am not in a position to question that decision. It's the way he and his team implemented the decision as reported by the Post & others I have a problem with. Ready to move on from this one.

When Harrison was a senior I spoke to his grandmother at the NCAA tournament. It was really a great conversation. She appreciated all the support fans had given her grandson, was emphatic that D'Angelo knew he wasn't an NBA player, and would like like long term future to be behind a microphone as an announcer.

Not sure if Lovett and his dad are so well grounded. I would think the plan would be to tear it up up playing overseas, and then make an NBA squad in a year or two. But who the heck knows what is going on in these kid's heads.

Chicago Days ... I enjoy your posts.

Mr. Lovett is from Chicago. Are you acquainted with him or his family?

Thanks.

Haven’t posted in a bit since it’s been a frustrating campaign. I try to stay positive but this situation is a disgrace IF true that he is simply protecting his future beyond this year.

The reason I say that is because if he and his father had this insufferably selfish mindset all along (which they probably did) then why did they decide to come back this year? So they could pack Musinni’s bags for him and ship him back to Italy since there was an assumption playing time would be limited?

If he just up and left at the end of last season maybe certain guys would’ve stuck around. Guys who actually play for their teammates AND their families. Not just for themselves and their dad whilst spending the last 6 years bouncing around school to school.

Welcome back! Musso wasn't coming back as his club team in Brescia offered to play him on the senior squad and for a decent salary. It wasn't a surprise to the staff. As you can see we have a big donut at the Five spot. That was the biggest loss. Zach Brown may have precipitated the departure of Sima who is serviceable big. The closest we may come to fixing that is with the 2019 class. Patience is not a virtue with young players these days and they reach out to handlers in a NYC minutes.;)

The problem in today's environment, is that so many kids are intent on proving their value at the next level that they won't even stick around to challenge someone that may be a higher rated recruit. You're right about Mussini. He never really intended to be here 4 years and just came for seasoning in the faster, tougher American college games. It makes building a roster from scratch so much tougher. Guys like Sima, Ellison, Mussini all could have added value to this years roster, and their departure is probably not even an aberration but more of a trend.

Truth is, if you can't earn time at a program in the state of SJU right now, you really don't deserve to be thinking about the next level.

Thanks Otis. But no, if I knew Marcus or the family--I would'v advised him to make sure he has healed, rejoin the team, and lead us to glory! Damn, all very frustrating.

Why not just dead this thread, why waste our time talking about him?
He quit on his team, so good f'ing bye.

We suck this year without him, he might be enjoying it thinking that we need him to play so we can we good.

But it's all good, we'll do it without him. Hopefully next year with Mullin.

You guys do know that Marcus LoVett Sr. resides and coaches in Southern Cal!?!? Chicago is out of the equation.;)

Ha , well I knew they now live in So Cal., but I thought they had Chicago roots.I could be wrong about that. Maybe, Marcus played one year for a HS in Chicago?

A generation ago Ralph Sampson could have left at any time to become the #1 or 2 pick in the draft. He loved school so much, that he decided to stay 4 years. I'm gonna guess his UVA degree has served him well.

Walter berry on the other hand got his degree years later, as did Chris. Hopefully this works out for him. He appears to be a nice kid

Whatever dreams Lovett and his Father have for him , let’s hope they achieve . He seemed like a nice kid , no trouble , liked by Teamates, etc . But, he did quit . Regardless of the reason . I recently saw on HBO the film Hoop Dreams , featuring 2 Chicago Area Players , William Gates and Arthur Agee. It must be 20 years ago but, it still has relevance . Lovett might be headed in the same direction . Marcus is a very nice B.B. player but, I doubt he will ever play in the NBA . His size and injury susceptiblity are against him . He may play for a while overseas but, for how long ? Until he’s 30? Maybe . Then , what does he do ? Coach ? He won’t get a HS or College Job , without a degree. AAU? Is Coaching there a living ? For 30 or so Years ? Again , doubtful . No one wished a injury to Marcus but, unless he has surgery , which no one had said was a recommended treatment, how much was he really risking in hurting it again ? Any time any player goes on the Court , risk of injury is present . It’s part of the game .

Great post. Yes, Hoop Dreams was a powerful film and it's lessons resonate today as much as back in the 1990s. Those 2 Chicago kids were shuffling up to Marquette i recall.
I understand Marcus's reasoning--but i think he's making a mistake. As you say, his chances of fulfilling his 'dreams on the court are not good. He needs college to be employable--even in tangent fields to hoops--like coaching or game commentary. I wish him well.

How about Ellison given that he was the biggest loss? Would he have considered staying if he knew Lovett was leaving?

Chicago days , Gates went to Marquette , don’t know if he graduated . Agee went to a JC first and then , Arkansas State as I recall . HBO should do a follow up look , 20 years later . Maybe some of these kids would have a better long term perspective of what life is like , after B.B. . Too few , including St John’s kids , don’t realize how important a Education is these days .

the list of players leaving too early is never-ending. Kids need to realize they have weaknesses and work on them. So, if your pretty much not a 1st or 2nd team All-American, stay in college! Talk to players who are in the D league, unless they want you to follow their struggling steps, I'm sure the honest ones will tell you to STAY IN SCHOOL! Any parent or guardian in a players camp who tells him he's ready for prime time, ask what do they want out of me. There's your answer. Bad advice Marcus, and as far as most of fans feel, you quit not so much on us, but your brothers working their ass off in these games.

Gates graduated from Marquette. Has a son playing college ball in Texas

Agee was arrested for hitting a woman last December
He is living in Chicago

I don't know how much a #1 or #2 pick makes these days, but if Sampson played today, how could you not leave, and chance blowing your knee out. You gotta think he would have left if he went to coll now.
One years paycheck and your set for life, if you invest wisely and don't party and waste it buying bling bling.
