LoVett Future

Per Zach B

Asked Marcus LoVett Jr. about returning to St. John's: "I don't know." #sjubb

I am thinking he is gone. But, I am also a long time SJU fan, so the glass is perpetually half empty. Is it me, or does it seems like every time we have a semi-stud, the kid has one foot out the door?

I think that if Marcus stayed, he could build a reputation here that might give him a better shot at the NBA (think Russ Smith at Louisville.....another 6'0" guy). He's an excellent talent. I happen to think some of the reason he disappeared at times was due to experience. It's hard to step in and play 30 minutes at PG in the BE. He did a nice job and with experience would be better.

Oh well.....out of our hands.

Sources believe it can go either way with Marcus LoVett Jr returning. Will meet with family to figure it out. #sjubb Could go pro.

Young man do what's best for you and your family!
Just try to put your heart into your decision and make the best of whatever way you choose to go.
There is no right or wrong way. Just your way and we in the St. John's community wish you the best and...
If you're back as #15, well that would be sweet.
You'd be a valuable pg on an improved team!

And go St. John's!!
:)

Even if Lovett leaves and nobody else leaves, we will have Ellison and Mussini as upperclassman and Ponds and Simon. We will have a sr. Bash at the 3. I think if we can get a quality grad transfer big we will be in good shape. Also w all the coaching changes you never know who will reopen their recruitment.

Do you notice that every year the commentators say we have one of youngest teams in the country? That is because people are constantly leaving. We need these kids to play for at least two or three years or we will never improve

Once I was speaking to a local college coach about recruiting. I asked him about a pretty good HS guard. He bluntly replied, "Good guards are a dime a dozen. Talented big men are hardest to find and recruit".

Lovett is a very good freshman undersized guard. He isn't Allen Iversen and without incredible speed is always going to be a 6 foot guard with an NBA dream where some guards are 6'7 or more. Not a lot of hope without an incredible amount of quickness or speed.

That doesn't obstruct his chances for getting paid somewhere in the world to play ball, and if he leaves he will get paid.

I know I was affected by what's been written here, but he came out against Nova like a guy who was trying to prove he is better than he is, played outside of himself, and helped put us in a big hole. I couldn't help but thinking he was thinking this could be his last Garden game and he wanted to light up the BET all by himself.

Some posters say he mailed it in the last few games and wasn't playing hard enough while others say he was trying too hard to impress because he knew this could be his last game. I'm still waiting for the first poster to say his departure will be "addition by subtraction." I love that line!

I have not seen one poster on this board say that they want Lovett to leave. Not one. What I have heard certain posters say is that if he leaves it ain't the end of the world, and we can actually have a good backcourt even without Marcus. And we may actually have a better defensive backcourt because many of Marcus's minutes will be eaten up by Simon. Who happens to be a point guard and also happens to be much bigger and stronger, which is always helpful on D. . Now go ahead and keep thinking that the team is going to collapse next year if Marcus leaves, if that's what makes you feel better. I think we'll be an improved team with or without him next year.[/quote

I hope Simon is as good as you think and is ready to lead the team to a bid in his first year manning the point. Anything less would be a disappointment for me in year 3 of the Mullin era.

Completely unrealistic on your part. Mullan inherited 3 scholarship players. 3 scholarship benchwarmers who averaged a grand total of 4 points. 1 had his most productive season by far , Félix , and graduated. A second had his most productive season by far , graduated , and elected to play in a much less competitive conference , and then we have AMAR.
So this season we returned Amar, Mussini, Ellison, Yakwe and Sima . A real murders row. We added Williams a first year senior who didn't play for 2 years, Owens who barely played his freshman season, Ponds who exceeded all expectations, Ahmed who did what I thought he would, Lovett who is far too inconsistent because his head is elsewhere and RF who was just not ready.
You expect and NCAA bid in year 3 after inheriting such a mess?
I suggest you put down the crack pipe , its very dangerous.

If Marcus Lovett, or any of this friends or family reads this post then please acquaint yourselves with the lonely nomadic life which former high school phenom and St. John's freshmen Omar Cook has lead.

Omar was a point guard that was ranked higher coming out of high school than Marcus.

Omar was the RSCI #11th ranked player in the high school class of 2000.
Marcus was RSCI #76 in the class of 2015.

Omar had a solid freshmen with comparable numbers to Mr. LoVett.

Omar led his St. John's team in scoring with 15.3 ppg,
Marcus averaged 16.0 pig.

Omar finished second in the country in assists 8.7 assist per game,
Marcus averaged 3.7 assists per game.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/3938917/marcus-lovett

Omar thought that he had a career in the NBA. He bolted from St. John's after his freshmen year being drafted as the 31st pick in the NBA 2d round. Before the draft, there was talk that Omar Cook would be the first point guard off the board.

Omar was quickly traded from the team that drafted him, and shuffled between the NBA Development League and 2 NBA teams but never spent any meaningful time with either NBA team. Omar headed over to Europe and according to the below 2014 article he played for ten ( 10 ) different teams in 10 years throughout Europe.

A few month ago when speculation about Mr. LoVett returning to St.John's first arose I posted an article which indicated that after 2014, Omar transitioned to China. The post 2014 article described Omar sitting in a small hotel room in China scanning Facebook. Certainly sitting in a small room in China was not the pro basketball career which Omar Cook contemplated when he bolted from St. John's in 2001 after just 1 season of college play.

Omar Cook now admits that the one year of college play didn’t prepare him for the NBA.

So yeah, if you know Marcus Lovett please tell him that if he believes he is a "can't miss" in the NBA, then Omar's experiences confirm that Marcus he can miss.

If Marcus believes that playing in Europe will be exciting ad financially lucrative then tell him about Omar's lonely nomadic experience from team to team 10 times in ten years which nomadic journey has brought him to China.

Most of all, please inform Marcus that Omar Cook now admits that the one year play of college didn’t prepare him for the NBA.

Thanks.

What I would like to see from our guards next year is when penetrating to the basket against a switching big man hand off to one of our cutting big man. Unfortunately I can't remember Ponds or Lovett doing so, instead they got their shot blocked while they fell to the floor.

the other side of this is that when you are traveling your nut is bigger. So $100k (assuming you make that much) may sound like a lot to a 19 year old, figure in your expenses and it may not be. Play in Korea and make $100k and you won't even be able to get a tiny apartment (to RENT) without a huge down payment. Heck in Silicon Valley you have $100k annual and you are eating ramen every night.

Everyone talks about not begrudging kids from making a paycheck but a paycheck is there for the rest of your life and most of these kids that are the rare exceptions to make a big paycheck are too immature to hold on to it. For most playing overseas won't get them enough income to change their life or their extended families. College is a good life and 4 years to live in a bubble of fun, learning and security. You can grow and become a better version of yourself. Professional is dog eat dog forever no turning back. You have kids and the NCAA is screwing you. OK go get a paycheck. If you don't, enjoy college life for as long as you can.

Thanks to the NCAA for robbing us of a year.

We would have sucked last year with or without Marcus, and he may have left after last year. And then we may have sucked this year too. So in some warped way, the NCAA may have helped us by declaring ineligible last year.

Look Marcus is a good player but to be honest if he left we could find a better replacement. He has not really been consistent, last 3 games he disappeared ,he is undersized yes he is fast but in this league you saw what happened to both of our guards trying to drive against talented big teams they did not finish or where blocked Simon and and ponds would seem to compliment each other
How can we say we are a very good shooting team when we shot poorly against GT and badly against Nova Looking back at this season it was pure frustration in our ability to defend we ran around a lot not being able to pick for players our shot selection was not even satisfactory success would have been to beat teams we were suppose too like LIU and to play teams close we were on too many lopsided loses and the way we played against Nova says little to argue a successful season

I don't want to knock the kid, but there are people on this board who act like the sky is falling over a kid who did not even make Big East honorable mention. He was a good, although inconsistent, player in his one year here. Maybe he gets better if he stays, but he didn't even get better over the course of this year. So other than looking at him through rose colored glasses, I'm not sure what would lead anyone to believe that his game is going to improve significantly next year. If he leaves, he is leaving to go play ball in Europe or the D league for cryin' out loud, not the NBA! And for those of you looking for "stability", 3 and 4 year players are going to bring us stability. Not kids who have one foot out the door before they ever step foot on the court.
Get a grip boys(although some of you sound like whiny little girls), we'll survive.

Plus it will give more time to Mussini so you will be all set

14 win team possibly loses 2nd best player. I would think that it would be ok to fret over that one. I did not see anyone post we would be doomed. Possible that might be because people thought we already were but still. I don't understand how people could complain about people worrying about Lovett possibly leaving. That is much more understandable then the people saying someone they have never seen before who though highly ranked supposedly can't shoot will be as productive or more than Lovett was.

Would hate to see him go. Not sure he has any NBA stock either, maybe overseas?

Maybe? Obviously.

Always have D League, hence the not so obvious.

Not really. D League doesn't pay enough to live on much less support other family members ($19,500-26,000 per year), unless you're attached to an NBA roster. So I'm giving Marcus a little more credit than to make that bad a decision. You can make so much more than that overseas and they pay your living expenses as well.

I believe the new NBA CBA raised the D league salaries to 75,000 a year. Maybe that's enough to entice him.

That's only for players attached to NBA rosters I believe. The two guys on the 15 man roster (soon to be more people) that are assigned to the D League. Doesn't apply to most. Here's the explanation I could find:

Creation of “two-way” contracts that will pay players who shuttle between their parent teams and Development League teams depending on where they’re playing. There will be additional roster spots on NBA teams as well to accommodate the two-way players. Players on those contracts will receive more money if they go to the D League, with the hope of keeping them from taking deals overseas.

Marcus Lovett is not an NBA player. He is a great teammate and is the type of player that needs better players around him to develop into a point guard. That said, I don't think he is growing 4 inches to 6'3 and having both him and Ponds on the court at the same time in the second half of the season became more of a liability on the defensive end. Hence we suffered way too many minutes by Ellison. Hopefully Matt doesn't lose his recruiting mojo like so many others at St. John's because his job next year is to bring in a stellar class.

Only positive if Lovett leaves is that we have an open scholarship. Can we recruit a player as good as Marcus at this late date. Me thinks not.

Just to point out that most overseas professional teams provide room and some if not all board expenses in addition to salary.

Funny.
When Harkless left people were claiming it was not that big a deal because Sampson was better.-He was not.

When Sampson left people were claiming we were better off-We were not.

When we got rid of a coach that took us two 2 NCAA's and 2 NIT's people said we would be better off.- Look we could go 0-32 next year and I won't ever kill the Mullin hiring. But that is mostly because I watched Mullin play here. I don't want Lavin back but still confused by the hatred.

When Jordan and Obekpa left people said good riddance.-Hey there was nothing that could be done about either but we certainly would have been better the last two seasons with those guys.

Some even argued AA over Chris Jones was the right move.-it most certainly was not.

When Slice left people were practically slamming the door on him.-Now I am not a recruiting guru or anything but it seems that his rep was that of a great recruiter. Even if situation had to end this way since school is paying him anyway and everyone was so excited when he came, not sure how he became a bum in one year?

Pretty sure based on our track record here SImon replacing Lovett not going to be a good trade.-Just saying.

And in most cases, the club will offset a player's taxes as well, so his salary would essentially be tax-free.

I do believe that Lovett would be able to get a contract around 200k in Europe. I can't fault him whatsoever if he chooses to go get his money. Fact of the matter is, 100k-200k is worth much more than the value of SJU tuition. As a basketball period he has a short period of time to cash in on his talents, and if his family isn't in a great financial situation you can't fault him one bit for wanting to support them. He can go make 6-figures in Europe and save a bit of that money each year and go back to school to get his degree once his playing career is over.

In fact, more and more schools are starting to pledge lifetime scholarships for athletes (its a good recruiting tool). Selfishly I want him to come back but can't at all fault the kid if he wants to go make some actual money which exceeds the value he's getting at SJU.

I don't remember anyone ever saying that Harkless leaving was no big deal?

WTF was Mullin/St John's supposed to do with Jordan and Obekpa? and this crap answers part of your other question about Lavin.
