LoVett Future

I'd like to have Marcus back.

That said, if he decided to go pro, it would present an opportunity to put a bigger guard next to Ponds, which would not be the worst thing in the world. It's tough playing D with two six-footers in the backcourt. Also Ponds and Lovett have not seemed to develop any chemistry on the floor, too often it is either/or in terms of one of them having a big game. If the 2nd guard was not quite as ball-dominant as Ponds and Lovett both are, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Just saying.

What you're "just saying" is spot on.

The thing with playing overseas is that when you are +/- 6' tall it is a lot more competitive and marketing wise local teams are going to favor local flavor while Americans always get begrudging acceptance only when they are clearly superior. Even then I've watched some Euro hoops where the star was say Italian on an Italian team, and clearly better players from the US on the team were used as role players and you could even see them deferring to the "stars."

Lovett could be a John Linehan type player if he got a little more physically mature and worked on his defense. Linehan didn't get drafted but had a Euro career as a defensive specialist. At Providence Linehan though small was physically mature. Lovett is probably a year or two away. Lovett a little taller and more skilled offensively might have more upside but he has a lot of work to do to make that real. He had problems with college guards both on offense and defense. Whoever is telling him to go pro is probably looking at their own meal ticket. He is at least a year or two away both physically and in skills.

I think Linehan was best on ball defender in BE history, or at least close.

Ricky Moore is right up there with him, especially considering the job he did in the national title game.

Thanks to the NCAA for robbing us of a year.

We would have sucked last year with or without Marcus, and he may have left after last year. And then we may have sucked this year too. So in some warped way, the NCAA may have helped us by declaring him ineligible last year.

Don't forget about Iverson.

Linehan we remember as a senior where he was a steals machine, lightning quick, disruptive and very strong for his size. Also a full grown man. (Erick Barkley broke his ankles though and made him look silly) I could be wrong but I don't believe he was an all conference defensive player until his junior season. We are comparing him to a guy that just finished his first year. Like I said, Lovett is a year or two away. We'll have some more size next season. I just wish we'd get to see the best of Lovett and for him to reap some of the rewards of the past two seasons of pain.

Look Marcus is a good player but to be honest if he left we could find a better replacement. He has not really been consistent, last 3 games he disappeared ,he is undersized yes he is fast but in this league you saw what happened to both of our guards trying to drive against talented big teams they did not finish or where blocked Simon and and ponds would seem to compliment each other
How can we say we are a very good shooting team when we shot poorly against GT and badly against Nova Looking back at this season it was pure frustration in our ability to defend we ran around a lot not being able to pick for players our shot selection was not even satisfactory success would have been to beat teams we were suppose too like LIU and to play teams close we were on too many lopsided loses and the way we played against Nova says little to argue a successful season

I do not think it likely we would find a better replacement -- at least not in the short term. I totally get the mentality that when one of our players leave early, we focus on the player's negatives and try to remain optimistic about the future.

I for one think Lovett was, for the most part, very good this year and believe he could develop into a terrific player with experience and a better surrounding cast.

I don't think there is any way to sugar coat it -- his loss would be a significant blow to the program. I understand that transfers and early departures are commonplace in today's college basketball landscape, but as several posters have pointed out, this program craves some modicum of stability.

At this moment, we simply don't have the talent and depth to replace the early departure of one of our best players. We need to catch a break sooner or later. Very much hoping Mr. Lovett returns.

I don't want to knock the kid, but there are people on this board who act like the sky is falling over a kid who did not even make Big East honorable mention. He was a good, although inconsistent, player in his one year here. Maybe he gets better if he stays, but he didn't even get better over the course of this year. So other than looking at him through rose colored glasses, I'm not sure what would lead anyone to believe that his game is going to improve significantly next year. If he leaves, he is leaving to go play ball in Europe or the D league for cryin' out loud, not the NBA! And for those of you looking for "stability", 3 and 4 year players are going to bring us stability. Not kids who have one foot out the door before they ever step foot on the court.
Get a grip boys(although some of you sound like whiny little girls), we'll survive.

Once I was speaking to a local college coach about recruiting. I asked him about a pretty good HS guard. He bluntly replied, "Good guards are a dime a dozen. Talented big men are hardest to find and recruit".

Lovett is a very good freshman undersized guard. He isn't Allen Iversen and without incredible speed is always going to be a 6 foot guard with an NBA dream where some guards are 6'7 or more. Not a lot of hope without an incredible amount of quickness or speed.

That doesn't obstruct his chances for getting paid somewhere in the world to play ball, and if he leaves he will get paid.

I know I was affected by what's been written here, but he came out against Nova like a guy who was trying to prove he is better than he is, played outside of himself, and helped put us in a big hole. I couldn't help but thinking he was thinking this could be his last Garden game and he wanted to light up the BET all by himself.

Some posters say he mailed it in the last few games and wasn't playing hard enough while others say he was trying too hard to impress because he knew this could be his last game. I'm still waiting for the first poster to say his departure will be "addition by subtraction." I love that line!

I have not seen one poster on this board say that they want Lovett to leave. Not one. What I have heard certain posters say is that if he leaves it ain't the end of the world, and we can actually have a good backcourt even without Marcus. And we may actually have a better defensive backcourt because many of Marcus's minutes will be eaten up by Simon. Who happens to be a point guard and also happens to be much bigger and stronger, which is always helpful on D. . Now go ahead and keep thinking that the team is going to collapse next year if Marcus leaves, if that's what makes you feel better. I think we'll be an improved team with or without him next year.

Per Zach B

Asked Marcus LoVett Jr. about returning to St. John's: "I don't know." #sjubb
when I read this I think back to my motto as a st johns fan. " prepare for the worst and hope for the best "

I don't know his personal financial situation, however I look at a guy like Hart that hangs around and improves his draft stock with Nova. I'd love to see our guards doing the same thing.
Some how, some way, this program must find stability.

Not everyone who hangs around improves their draft stock. Whether Hart did or not remains to be seen.

As Boo Harvey posted a few minutes ago this team cannot afford to lose any productive player. While the lack of defense is the worst culprit the offense without the two guards would have been worse.
You can say Ellison and Owens showed some improvement of the returning layers then but that was it. I watched the Geo replay this morning and twice Rafftery was critical of a Hoya for going out to the foul line to defend Yawke . Why bother he said. How can we lose our second best offensive threat without getting hurt. I've never seen Clark or the Az guard play but as of now they better be big contributors on both ends of the court.

There have been a number of recent posts critical of his game, which happens to coincide with Zach's article. Human nature I guess, but unfortunate. I never suggested the team will collapse next year without him and it certainly wouldn't make me feel better to believe that. That's just silly.

Maybe we still improve even without Lovett. That's not impossible or necessarily unlikely. However, I think many of us were hoping for significant improvement next year rising to the level of a tourney bid. Seems to me Lovett's departure would be a major blow to that.

I hope Simon is as good as you think and is ready to lead the team to a bid in his first year manning the point. Anything less would be a disappointment for me in year 3 of the Mullin era.

I don't expect Simon to be as offensively gifted as Lovett and I question where the scoring will come from.

Agree we are on the same page

lets be honest next yr does not depend on our coach or staff which most can agree they need work It all comes down to our recruiting if we get div 1 talent we progress it not we don't
