Louie's Last Season

Looie should have gotten them tutors since both were academically ineligible in 88-89 which along with Sproling being Prop 48 led SJU to being a 8th place BE team and NIT bound instead of NCAA which at the time Looie had had one of the longest NCAA streaks.

Of course Porter just skipped out at least Harvey stayed and got eligible for 89-90.

Quick story on Harvey he was originally a Syracuse commitment back when he was a senior in HS in 84-85. However he failed to qualify so he went JUCO and paired with Porter at San Jacinto. So Syracuse had an extra scholarship and needed a PG to back up Pearl for what would be Pearl's last year 85-86. They found a PG in DC (Spingarn HS) named Sherman Douglas. He was not offered by Georgetown. He was not heavily recruited. He was basically a last minute offer by Boeheim because Harvey failed to qualify. And of course he barely played in 85-86 but would have one of the best PG careers of any BE guard ever over his final 3 years.
Sherman Douglas was phenomenal in college. We went nuts when we beat Cuse at MSG ( I think Douglas got hurt in the game ). I had a theology class with Boo. He actually went to class he was quiet but nice guy. That year with his last second shots I don’t remember any player hitting that many last second shots. ESPKEN how many were there that year ? I definitely did play by play for one of them at MSG for the school radio station I think I did 2 but maybe I’m getting the second one confused with being down at the GTOWN game

If redmen.com were around in the 80s, we would have collectively put our fists through our CRT monitors with news of Boo and Porter's ineligibility.

The game at MSG you are referring to that SJU won I believe was the NIT year of 88-89, Douglas was hurt that game and Stevie Thompson played PG for them. And SJU upset them. It was a CBS game.

That’s definitely possible that would have been my freshman year

It was that year. That is the game that Carnesecca famously does an excited fist pump and a skip after they won.
He may have done it after that game but you maybe referring to his most famous fist bump/skip which of course was the BET Final vs Syracuse in 1986.

Go to 1:32:00 of the game and watch a replay of the end and of course Looie's reaction.

Absolutely correct.

To add to that story, fast forward three years with Boo completing his junior year at St. John's. With Marcus Broadnax transferring out mid-season, Steve Shurina graduating, the eligibility of Boo for the next season in doubt, with Porter basically being expelled for academics, Elander Lewis transferring out at the end of that season, and Chuck Sproiling being Prop 48, we found ourselves short on guards (Matt Burst and Kevin Fitzpatrick). So we late in the recruiting cycle we picked-up Jason Buchanan (a lighlty recruited guard from right outside of Syracuse who they didn't recruit at all), Terrence Mullin and Juco Darrell Aiken who was supposed to go to CW Post.

While no Sherman Douglas, JB turned alot of heads in a good way his freshman year and his junior year he actually lead the BE in assist (something Douglas did the previous three years).

Yes, that was one of them.

But I do remember he enjoyed the Syracuse win at the Garden with Sealy, Buchanan, and Werdann all freshmen.

That was my freshman year too.

Funniest thing at the first Redmen.com party at mustang Sally’s in 2001 or 02 or whenever. Kranmars ( back then screen name AR ) walks in and we look at each other and are like “ I know you what are you doing here “ lololololol then the following year I started sitting with him and Zanman with my season tix

The Roberts Center was a tough venue. Tom Davis and Gary Williams had that gym cooking.
Never forget our great 14-0 win streak to start 1982-83 season was snapped in Chestnut Hill.
We were #3 at that time. The team watched #1 and 2 go down in defeat and guys were talking if we won we would become #1. We lost and then the team departed BC in a snowstorm against better judgement, got as far as Hartford where the bus driver said no mas and they had to check into a cheap hotel for the night.

I do not want to press my luck.
I will try to guess, 89-90 season. He beat DePaul in the NIT Semi's with last second jumper. He beat Georgetown late with a jumper at the Cap Center, beat Pitt late with a jumper on the road, hit a last second 3 pointer to send game at Meadowlands into OT against SHU and they eventually won that in OT.

I think I got most of them.

LouLou...Elander Lewis. Totally forgot about him. From Albany HS was a big deal when he got a scholarship to SJU. I am from upstate NY.

High School stars from upstate rarely were good enough to go to Power 6 schools. Greg Koubek a few years later going to Duke from Shenendehowa-Clifton Park was another one.

DePaul game was the MSG one then that I did for wsju. Gtown game I was at. The radio station definitely didn’t send us to Pitt and the Seton Hall game I think I was at with friends. I think you might be right on your sequence it’s so long ago

The real story regarding Boo and his recruitment. SJU knew he did not meet NCAA requirements and were shocked when he was offered by the Cuse as were other schools. All the schools knew his transcript was questionable and possibly changed. A little birdie called the Cuse about it, and the person at his High School admitted mistakes were made. That’s why the Cuse admitted he failed to qualify and Boo went to San Jac. Coach Rutledge practically spent the who season at San Jac keeping the wolves away and we also got Porter. Rutledge spent so much time at San Jac, First keeping the wolves away from Walter Berry then Harvey that he could have run for mayor.

The best one (although hated by everyone who isn't a Duke fan) was and still is Christian Laettner.

I kept in contact with Elander for a while but lost contact. He did reappear on campus once or twice (even an MSG game IIRC) for basketball Alumni events. He finished out his career at VCU and averaged double figures both seasons there.
