Louie's Last Season

Revisionist history.
Tough to play sporadic minutes but Cain was awful whenever he did play. Made it look worse was the fact that had that weird looking jump shot. Looked like Reggie Jesse jumper on crack.
Again Senior year was incredible.
Not revisionist history for me..,I said it then…never thought much of Buchanan as a PG. Pretty good player otherwise. Who knows, Cain may have flopped. But, really was never given a legit chance until senior season. Yanked every time he made a mistake.

Wasnt there William Bedford and Andre Turner on that team as well. They had a good tourney run. Turner led a comeback at one point and the SI article was "a little Tiger Turneround" or something. Maybe the one with the famous cover of the three big east stars.
Correct about Bedford and Turner and they had Baskerville Holmes, and a good bench, and a good coach. Keith Lee was their big star.

Baskerville Holmes - one of the all time greatest names in college basketball! Great memory, BR, I remember loving that guy just because of the name; I read the complete adventures of Sherlock Holmes at least twice growing up.

You can't make that name up, right?

My H.S. had two of the best names ever (this is no lie):
August September
Mario Dario

Quick Looie story.

Here's been retired about 10-15 years. I am at the garden for a game. I get on an elevator which I wasn't really supposed to be on, and who is on the elevator but Lou.

He says to me if the security guard says anything I'll tell them you're with me.

We get off at Level 6 together and before we part ways, he's asked me when I graduated, my wife's name, where I live, how our children were, and wished me good health. I did likewise.

It was a thrill to meet him and he really was such a nice man and down to earth guy.

Back in the formative years of the Big East Boston College was formidable and carried that on for quite a while. It was Uconn who was the doormat, oh, the good old days.
The Roberts Center was a tough venue. Tom Davis and Gary Williams had that gym cooking.
Never forget our great 14-0 win streak to start 1982-83 season was snapped in Chestnut Hill.

There has to be a Million stories like that involving Louie . He as our Coach was known all over America . Not only for having his on Court success but , also his charisma . On the sidelines and all over . Jack Kaiser was cut from the same high character cloth too . Even now , if Lou is at a game the Camera always finds him . And , Announcers throw him a bouquet .

Luigi, our "Little Gem" a favorite of Raff, Bobby Knight, Tim Brando, Jim Sparnarkle, Dave Sims, Bruce Beck and a host of others.

He followed in the steps of another HoFer and BB icon and did pretty well for himself at 5'7".

Another story to piggyback Brooklyn Redmen.

The poster, Zanman and I were at a game at the Garden and saw him talking with a few people near a concession area. This must have been about 5-6 years after Louie retired.

So zanman and I are going to gently walk by and say hello and keep going, after all he is talking to others. No sooner did we take a step, Louie looks up and says, “Hey, look who is, Alfredo”. He shook our hands and said he remembered me from the Torch. Suffice it to say, that was awesome.

Just one more in a vast number of great Louie stories.

You bring up a hood point . Back in the Day , Joe Lapchick enjoyed almost God like status among his peers , news media , sports writers , former players , etc . Bobby Knight , while Coaching at Army in the 60’s , respected Joe by always calling him Mr. Lapchick . Can you imagine Bobby Knight being in awe of a fellow Coach ? And , of course , the story is factual that Lew Alcindor was all set to come to St John ‘s until the Powers that ran the school told Lapchick he was going to be Retired at the end of the 1964-65 season . Kareem has verified that on several occasions . Of course , Kareem then went to UCLA . Lew , at the time a high schooler had a existing friendship with Sonny Dove , even though they went to different high schools .

Sam Gilbert bought those UCLA National Championships. It's well documented. Lew should man up and admit it was Gilbert money that brought him to UCLA. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2010-jun-08-la-sp-0609-wooden-gilbert-20100609-story.html

I remember the back court of Boo Harvey and Michael Porter arguably the fastest guard tandem in the Big East if not the country and Looie making them walk the ball up the court.

So you're saying Boo and Porter would've thrived in CMA's system?

Looie should have gotten them tutors since both were academically ineligible in 88-89 which along with Sproling being Prop 48 led SJU to being a 8th place BE team and NIT bound instead of NCAA which at the time Looie had had one of the longest NCAA streaks.

Of course Porter just skipped out at least Harvey stayed and got eligible for 89-90.

Quick story on Harvey he was originally a Syracuse commitment back when he was a senior in HS in 84-85. However he failed to qualify so he went JUCO and paired with Porter at San Jacinto. So Syracuse had an extra scholarship and needed a PG to back up Pearl for what would be Pearl's last year 85-86. They found a PG in DC (Spingarn HS) named Sherman Douglas. He was not offered by Georgetown. He was not heavily recruited. He was basically a last minute offer by Boeheim because Harvey failed to qualify. And of course he barely played in 85-86 but would have one of the best PG careers of any BE guard ever over his final 3 years.
